Let’s talk about Lidl perfume and aftershave: Suddenly Madame Glamour and X Bolt for men on shelves today

By Aisling | November 19 2012 | 21 Comments

It’s a well known fact in cosmetic circles that almost every perfume costs about 5 cents to make.  Honestly.  The mark up on perfume is massive and that’s why every celebrity rushes to churn out as many as possible.  But it’s not just celebrity perfume that’s cheap to make – it’s all of them.  That €70 bottle of perfume you just bought?  5 cents to make.  Or thereabouts.  Maybe even rising to a phenomenal ten or fifteen?

Ok so my figures may not be strictly accurate – but the point I’m making is the honest truth. Perfume is really really, really cheap to produce.  How else does a well known cosmetic brand produce ridiculously expensive perfumes with multi million ad campaigns (Read Who said Chanel take themselves too seriously? The Brad Pitt ad is the best laugh ever) and still turn a whopping profit?

Of course I’m talking about Chanel.  Well I kind of gave that away in the link above didn’t I?  But possibly their snobby grip on the perfume market may be loosening in Recession Ireland.  In blind tests last year  Newstalk and Today FM rated Lidl’s Suddenly Madame Glamour above Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle.

Not only could participants not tell the difference between the eyewateringly expensive Chanel brand and the cheapo Lidl offering – they actually preferred the Lidl scent.

And loads of other tests and surveys found the same thing happening.  Cue stampedes to the shelves of Lidl (remember in Ireland we pronounce that to rhyme with “piddle” – none of your fancy Lee-dill for us) and an instant sell out of the fragrance (read our review of it here).

It’s back again this Christmas – Suddenly Madame Glamour (€3.49 50ml) and Body Lotion and Shower Gel Gift Sets (€5.99) are on shelves right now.  And they won’t hang around if last year was anything to go by – so forget your inner perfume snob, squeeze your eyes shut and go grab some! It smells great to be honest and if you like scents like Mademoiselle you will love this.  Honest injun.

And to go for gold Lidl decided to see if they could replicate the success with a mens scent.  And guess what?  They did it.  Again in blind tests X Bolt scored above Hugo Boss, David Beckham, Dior and D&G for men.

X Bolt (3.99 50ml) is being loaded onto shelves today in your local Lidl.  Go go go!

I didn’t smell any of that perfume or hear anything about, but it sounds good. I often had a smell of Tesco perfumes and they are actually quite nice.

I actually gave Madame Glamour a spritz yesterday in Lidl, ready to hate it and to deny that it could ever compare with Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle, which I own and love at the moment….and you know what? The Lidl version is actually fantastic, long wearing and the exact dupe of Coco Mademoiselle! In fact if I were to smell Suddenly on someone else I would swear it’s Coco Mademoiselle. It’s actually shocking how good it is, this coming from a total perfume snob :)I love it

  • Jacinta says:

I have the Madame Glamour and I love it. It doesn’t last as long as a more expensive perfume but sure at just over €3 a bottle you can afford to give yourself an extra squirt after a couple of hours! Will pick up a bottle of the new mens scent next time I’m in!

  • Aifs says:

I must pick up a bottle of Madame Glamour next time I am in Lidl. I did manage to acquire a 100ml bottle of Coco Mademoiselle (edp) in Boots for NOTHING!! I had €125 on my Boots card. :) I now have €20.

  • Buttons says:

Oooh dying to try it now! Never heard of it before but I like the sound (and price!) of it!
Will be popping into Lidl to pick up a bottle for myself. Will let you know tomorrow what I make of it.

  • Sabrina says:

I’ve been wearing Coco Mademoiselle for years, and i’m convinced Chanel are watering it down. Off to Lidl at lunch, thanks.

I heard them on Newstalk about this before. Perfume is so overpriced – I think Chanel etc use the perfume income to fund Karl Lagerfeld’s posse of sycophants. You could always buy one of the nice perfume decanter bottles with the old fashioned squirter thing and keep it on the desk at work – bet noone would be any the wiser….

  • *Aisling* says:

tori I was just thinking that about a perfume decanter – that would be a lovely way to get around this if you didn’t like the packaging and er fact that you’re wearing a Lidl perfume. But I have to say to everyone – give it a go, you’ll be surprised I swear

  • Molly says:

God i’m shocked, i didn’t realise perfume was so cheap to make!!

  • Makeup glitz says:

I tryed the lidl perfume last time it was out and to be honest I found it horrible it smelt like old ladys to me and very overpowering. Goes to show how ppl differ with scents .. Perfume is ridiculously over priced and most of the time expensive ain’t all that nice I love some of the essence perfume range I think it’s gorgeous and only 3.49

  • OtherMary says:

Mainstream perfume is over 90% alcohol, even EdPs do not go below 85%. Alcohol costs nothing. You literally could not pay with money for the quantity of alcohol in a perfume bottle. The bottles are made for a few cents in China. Everything is cheap wholesale.

  • Fee says:

I was lamenting Lidl for taking this off the shelves for most of this year because I had a bottle of Lidl Glamour and preferred to use it a lot more than my bottle of Coco Mademoiselle.
I ran out of the Lidl Glamour because I loved it so much. I actually prefer it to the Coco Chanel.
    Off to Lidl with me.

  • Shanna says:

It never left our Lidl, I have gone through about six bottles of the stuff. Will definitely pick up a gift set or two, I think it’s lovely.

  • Aoife says:

Yay! I’ve been checking my local Lidl every so often for this! *rushes off to pick some up!*

  • Im dying to have a sniff of this now.. I never even realised they did stuff like perfume

  • Laura says:

Dying to check these out, being a huge lover of chanel perfumes in general! Off to lidl with me…!

  • hermanspottypants says:

Yo yo yo- please stop picking on the Chanel fragrance house! I must defend it!

Whilst the Chanel advertisements with Brad Pitt are a total load of contrived bull, (and he looks like a drip), Chanel is one of the few fragrance houses that are serious about the quality of the ingredients they use- so much so that they even grow some ingredients in order to protect quality and to be sure the ingredient is available….so your scent smells vaguely similar batch to batch and doesn’t run out.

Mind you, in the case of coco mademoiselle it would be excellent if all of the ingredients would run out for at least a decade so no-one could wear it anymore. No offense to those that like or love it but I personally am so tired of smelling it on soooo many people-for me it has become as boring as a school uniform. NOW thanks to the dupe it will only dominate the olfactory plane further….. yep I have a strong sense of smell and I can track where my colleagues have been around the building based on their scent some of which are vile.

Some Chanel fragrances like 19 use one of the most expensive ingredients- iris root butter which can sell in the tens of thousands of dollars per kilo. Chanel also pays to have an in house perfumer (Jacques Polge) AND a director of research and development for fragrance (Christopher Sheldrake). They are the olfactory ‘artists’. So imitation is flattery….and Lidl is a copy-cat….dirty rat…..

I love their baked beans! Oh and their perfume is lovely I have bought it a few times! Plus their face creams, hair dye and toiletries.

  • Ciara says:

Just bought me a bottle of this…. as someone who is mega picky about perfume I’m seriously impressed, think I may need a second bottle- for €3.49 it’d be rude not to! ;-)

  • Aoife says:

Right, I’m convinced. I’m getting some tomorrow so.
