Hot for AW11 nails: Jewel tones and, er, shades of sludge

Opulence and the 1970s have informed AW11′s fashion in a big way, and their influence is similarly evident in some of the upcoming season’s hottest beauty trends. Sure it would hardly be autumn if jewel tones and metallics weren’t on the agenda for nails, and they are – yet again! – as are ’70s-esque shades of sludge.

Very good news for anyone who’d like to tip a nod to the new trends without stocking up on spangly trousers or felt fedoras …

Jewel tones & metallics

Opting for rich, vibrant, gemstone-alike colours opens the lid on a veritable treasure chest of options. There’s something to suit all tastes and skintones: ruby and garnet are the old standards, but this time around emerald, amethyst, sapphire, and of course peridot make the grade, too.

Blingy, lustrous finishes in moody, winter-appropriate shades are a glam choice and always a safe bet for *whispers* party season.

THREE TO TRY

  1. Barry M Vivid Purple
  2. Andrea Fulerton Mischa
  3. Chanel Peridot

Sludge Shades

Colours that are fugly but interesting continue their reign as the new nudes. Murky khakis, camels and taupes can be difficult to carry off and look pretty rotten on all but the most perfect of pale skins, though.

If you find such shades difficult to carry off, try muted greys and sage greens instead, or break up the colour with a little ornamentation in the shape of a glitter accent nail or Yigal Azrouel stylee glitter tips.

THREE TO TRY

  1. Essence Most Wanted
  2. Rimmel Grey Matter
  3. Essie Chinchilly

What will you be rocking on your own tips for AW11?

Love the sludge shades – been meaning to try the glitter look for a while so think I’ll take the plunge for my friend’s hen party this weekend.

  • Kirstie says:

    Glitter and jewels thanks!

Loving this Lynnie, those nails are probably my fave of all your collection. Have recreated them using Leighton Denny & the Gosh glitter pot manys the time now.

Wearing Peirdot today with a leopard accent (in truth they’re still on since wedding on Sat) but have had loads of compliments on it.

Am a fiend for glitter too – I think both ranges compliment each other beautifully!

Was very impressed with Lyndar’s nails – so I attempted them myself. Attempted being the important word here. http://instagr.am/p/LiISh/
Not sure if I got the right bottle of Essence, and my sparkles are a little too big. But I was impressed with end result!

Actually think the time has come for me to try the sludge – I saw a lovely Mavala colour in debenhams, but refused to pay €6.95 for it (come on like, mavala is €3.99 everywhere else, expletives!) and it’s sold out online as far as I have been able to find so far…

If anyone spots it let me know!

Essence is going to discontinue the Multi Dimension line in Fall so it might be the last chance to get Most Wanted. Sister brand Catrice has a shade called Absolute Chinchilly which I wonder how close it is to Essie’s Chinchilly

  • LuLuBabe says:

Oh I LOVE sludge! Essie Chinchilly will be mine!

  • Princess Lisa says:

wearing Peridot right now and love it! thought I’d prefer Quartz or Graphite but Peridot won me over when I tried them all on at the counter.

  • Nua Eabhrac says:

eek, you guys beat me to it! Very excited for the metallics, esp. Barry M Vivid Purple… not so thrilled about the sludge shades…

  • SJP's Missing Mole says:

Bought that Revlon yesterday, very excited to try it! (Prob layered over black for premium opacity)
