On Trial: Murad Sleep Reform

murad sleep reform

D’yiz know that  I’m a bit fond of the works of Dr Howard Murad? And by ‘the works’, I mean ‘the products’.

They’re pricey, but. His durian-fruit packed Age Reform Intensive Resurfacing Peel product is a whopper of a price at €225, and his cellulite solutions are hardly any cheaper. And yet anything I’ve tried I’ve loved – I reckon his Perfecting Day Cream SPF 30 is one of the best moisturisers I’ve ever used, in fact. So I thought that, even though this new Sleep Reform Serum is €99, it would be a worthy candidate for review on the blog. If it was any cop, of course.

What piqued my interest about it to begin with was the fact it contains melatonin. Now, I iz no scientizt, but as far as I know, it’s important in the regulation of our circadian rhythmns and it’s being studied intensively at the moment to see how it can be harnessed for use in sleep and beauty remedies.

The product also contains a Repair Enhancement Matrix (REM Complex) that’s made up of two other potent actives: Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) for muscle relaxation and Methylsulfonylmethany (MSM) for reducing inflammation. Along with melatoin, I should be seeing the following: “a restful sleep for skin, building connective tissue and improving repair, growth and development of muscle tissue. This translates to a more resiliant, youthful-looking skin.”

I’ve been checking it out for about a week and while it feels lovely, smells of lavender and relaxy things and it soaks in really nicely, it’s not a long enough period to see a real difference.

So I’m going to carry on with it till the bottle is done, and report back – watch this space.

WIN! Murad Firm & Tone Serums

murad firm and tone

Off on holliers and positively dreading it? One of the best chances you have to look good in a two-piece could come courtesy of Dr Howard Murad. A skin-whizz, I had the chance to meet him last year and get into the nitty gritty of one of his favourite skin issues, cellulite.

It’s not a fat problem, he says, but rather a problem with the skin. Weak cell walls leak fluid leading to lumps and bumps, and he’s got a whole routine to help you solve it, from nutritional supplements (he really believes beauty comes from within) as well as topical products to massage in and smooth on.

We’ve got TEN of his acclaimed Firm and Tone Serum, worth €59 each, to give away. “It is a breakthrough serum containing encapsulated liposomes that deliver actives to skin tissue layers, assisting with reversing and preventing cellulite and stretch marks,” says the good doc.

Less Than Three Weeks to Go And Not a Child Washed in the House: Getting in Shape for Christmas

get in shape

YIKES.

Christmas madness is definitely upon us.  In less than three weeks, we’ll be satiating ourselves with an orgy of turkey, sprouts, stuffing and Quality Streets. No ham this year, sadly. There’s LDBs to fit into, décolléte, arms and cleavage to show off, and sure some of you might want to show a bit of leg and all.  What to do? I have gallantly researched two solutions for you, which, while expensive, may help with the firmin’ n’ tonin’ n’ sleekin’ n’ suckin’ so many of us try to get done in December.

SOLUTION ONE
Mama Mio Bootcamp for Butts is a month-long programme that’s “a complete bottom and thigh skincare and exercise system to lift your butt in 30 days”. And how, pray tell?  The kit contains instructions for two special glute and hamstring exercises, which you must do each day. After that, you use a body buffer three times a week; a tummy toner once a day and a daily Shrink to Fit cream which helps to tone and tighten skin and reduce cellulite.

The ‘slebs are mad about it, apparently, with Christina Aguilera, and, er, Tori Spelling rating it highly.  The cost of such wonderment? €140, a bit of a stretch. But if your arse is in grand nick, there’s also a Bootcamp for Boobs version too, which retails at €85. Where to purchase? Through beautygiftsireland.com (where until December 15th you’ll get 20% off if you quote beaut.ie on the order form), at Alchemist Earth, Limerick, Bump and Beyond, Swords plus selected stockists nationwide, phone 01 4610 645 for a full listing.

Murad Firming Bronzer is the Business

Murad Firming Bronzer is the Business

Not a massive fan of faking it in general, I will admit that sometimes I do need a little bit of bronze. I’d bought a new top with quite short sleeves, and not being a fan of my upper arms in general – bingo wings, anyone? – I decided I needed a bit of help.

Out came Murad Firming Bronzer, €44.25. It’s an immediate skin tint that also promises a toning effect, plus it’s got sun protection – SPF15 – too. A pearlised liquid, one to two small pumps was enough for each arm. Fluid and really easy to blend, it gives a realistic shot of colour that doesn’t look ridiculous along with the rest of pale, pale me. I lashed a bit on my chest too, just to take the bare look off it.

No smell and instant results make this brilliant for last minute self-tanning. And the firming effect? Well, my skin did look better – but I’m not too sure how much firmer it was. Suffice to say, I was happy to go out, confident that my upper arms looked quite considerably better than they usually do. And as it washes off with soap and hot water too, it’s so handy. This one’s a keeper, gals.

Murad have recently launched an Irish website (bravo, that’s what we like to see!) and if you sign up for the newsletter, you can be in with a chance to win €350 worth of products – not too shabby, eh? I couldn’t locate the bronzer on the site, but you can buy in-salon – there are now loads of stockists here, including Oceana in Malahide, Therapie on Molesworth Street, Carter Beauty in Dun Laoghaire, and Urbana on Wicklow Street. Alternatively, call 0044 207 380 1677 for one near you.

Oh Yes, I am Liking Murad Advanced Performance Perfecting Day Cream

Murad

Obsessed as I am with SPFs and sun protection and fighting premature ageing, I thought it was high time I tried out a Murad moisturiser with SPF30 I’ve had in my stash for some time. Spurred on by the tale told to me by a friend of a gone-off luxury product, I cracked the tube late last week.

Simple, stylish packaging, and a thick, fairly heavy cream greeted me. I looked at it a little dubiously. It was very white.

I put it on, and was pleasantly surprised. Scented with lavender, it’s packed full of antioxidants and is soothing and kind. Thankfully, it also absorbs immediately, with no ghostly white residue. Ideal for dry or sensitive skins – hello – it’s been a good choice for my boatrace. I’ll usually know fairly soon if something isn’t going to do it for me – the achingly tight skin is a good indicator, I’ve found – but this is hydrating, reliable, and provides a brilliant base for makeup. And of course, the addition of a sun protection factor of 30 is a huge plus.

Murad isn’t widely available here, but can be purchased (to the best of my knowledge) from Carter Beauty in Dun Laoghaire; Urbana on Wicklow Street; Therapie on Molesworth Street and online from Strawberrynet, where Advanced Performance Perfecting Day Cream will set you back €31.50 – a good tenner cheaper than regular retail, if I am not mistaken.

A little heads-up on Murad

murad.jpg

Developed by practising U.S. dermatologist and pharmacist Dr. Howard Murad in the late ’80s in response to patient demand, Murad is a brand that specialises in regimes to combat frustrating skin concerns, including acne, aging (be it genetic, environmental or hormonal), and redness and sensitivity. The Murad approach to looking after your hide features the normal topical kind of skincare we’re all familiar with, as well as complementary internal skincare in the form of Murad’s own skin-specific supplements. This is a reflection of Murad’s holistic philosophy that you need to take care of yourself both inside and out for skin to look its absolute best.

I’ve been having a go of a few products from across the different ranges; everything I tried did exactly what it said on the tin which is always good! Their Eye Treatment Complex was something I particularly liked; it definitely brightened and rehydrated my eye area while seeming to soften pesky fine lines. Slightly drier skins than mine would love the Sheer Lustre Moisturiser, which contains moisture-giving things like omega oils and essential fatty acids along with luminescent minerals to add radiance and perk up even the dullest skin.

Unfortunately, I can’t say whether the supplement end of things is any cop, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has given them a whirl – or anyone who thinks they sound like a total cod altogether!

You can get your Murad fix from HQhair.
