Scented candles: oh yeah baby

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

jomalone.jpg

I have to admit I’m a total sucker for scented candles. There’s nothing more indulgent than lighting the expensive candle, pouring the wine and then running the bubble bath, is there?

But when you’re buying candles it doesn’t pay to cut corners. Cheapie candles are just sprayed on the outside with scent – that’s why they’re cheap. Luxury candles – the likes of Jo Malone for example – are infused throughout with gorgeous fragrances and oils so the scent lasts and lasts and can easily perfume a whole room (or house). Nue Blu Erui have their own range of candles which are gorgeous, Marks and Spencer do a very fine line in candles and at the moment I’m burning a yummy Yon-ka candle.

What are your favourites? And which ones would you steer us clear of?

shimmer bricks

We’re big fans of Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks (left) at beaut.ie, but I admit they can be kinda pricey at about €38 a pop. So my beady little eyes nearly popped out of my head in joy when I saw this yum looking Autograph Sunglow Bronzing Powder from M&S (right). Others may decrie Marks as being a bit on the side of bidser, but I bleedin’ love it. It supplies me with tights, knickers and my extensive grape habit. The fruit, as well as the booze, naturellment. And in addition to all that, this lovely lookin’ bronzer is ace value at a mere €19. Not half bad, eh?

PS: a little hint - if you visit Strawberrynet right now, they have 2 types of Shimmer Brick on sale for €30 – a daycent auld reduction, I think you’ll agree.

Brilliant Buttermilk handcream for Beaut.ies on a budget

ingredients.JPG

Looking for a daycent handcream that won’t break the bank? Well, you could do worse than check out the offerings in Marks and Spencer’s ‘Ingredients’ range. I’ve been giving their Buttermilk Softening Hand and Body Cream a whirl lately and am really liking it. It’s not overpoweringly Scinted the way budget buys can sometimes be, has a lovely silky texture, is quickly absorbed and there’s not a hint of greasiness about the stuff. Oh, and it is working wonders on my poor gardening-weary paws, which were chapped, dry, and in serious danger of cracking right open.

So that’s a big well-moisturised thumbs up from me!

Marilyn Monroe in 5 easy steps?! How not to get the look with M&S Autograph

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

monroe.jpg

Aaieee – did anyone see Expose on TV3 last night?

Use Marks and Spencer Autograph makeup to look exactly like Marilyn Monroe – in 5 easy steps! Sounded great. I settled down with my cup of tea to learn these secrets.

What can I say except – it all went horribly wrong. The model looked as though she was showcasing a fetching Halloween zombie look.

A makeup artist got confused with the five easy steps catchphrase and thought it meant in 5 sloppy seconds. Hastily drawn wonky lines, nasty lipstick and scary eyebrows. And that was only Lorraine Keane. Ah no, only joking.

At the end of it the M&S model looked downright shell shocked. Needless to say she looked nothing like Marilyn Monroe.

Anyway here’s the 5 easy steps:

  1. Cover eyes with a neutral shadow
  2. Define socket line with darker shadow
  3. Draw a line in the socket with brown eyepencil and smudge it
  4. Fill in eyebrows to define and make them darker
  5. Use kohl instead of liquid liner to dramatically define the eye, as “no normal person can use liquid liner” apparently.
  6. Use a mascara with a built in eyelash primer. Use loads of mascara.
  7. Lots n lots of red lipstick

Hmmm this is more than 5 steps methinks. Anyway anyone see this frightening event? What did you think?

And if this makes its way onto YouTube I want to be the first to know!

Autumn Makeup Previews: M&S Autograph

autograph

I often see you gals blathering away about M&S’s Autograph cosmetics range and it’s one we don’t often blog about. For no good reason that I write most of the makeup posts and I don’t own much of it! A situation I often mean to rectify because the stuff looks lovely, and always gets the thumbs up from Those Who Know, too.

I may well begin my rectification process with this yum looking palette which will be in M&S stores from September. It’s got four flattering (yet still nice and candy coloured) shades, and it’s a mere €14. Roll on September!

Mothers Day Pressies

pamperbox.jpg

Mothers Day. Marks & Spencer. The two terms are kind of synonymous in my mind. The flowers. The Belgian chocs. The scented candles. The gorgeous cards and gift bags…

They have the most fab beauty gifts, suitable for giving to that most special woman in your life – the mammy. I’m loving this Pamper Box, filled with bath and body goodies, scented candle, heart shaped chocs and a little bottle of pink cava. In fact I’ve already got it! For me. Couldn’t resist, sorry.

And although I’m only a mother of three cats, I’m pretty sure they’ll be getting me something nice on mothers day. Plus a card signed with pawprints. We’re a bit nuts like that in out house. Sure why not!

So now over to you: what are you getting your mother and how are you celebrating La Feile Mammy?  Have you seen anything nice in the shops that you’d recommend? Let us know!

Eddie Hobbs Advises: Swap Mugler for M&S

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

eddie, king of parsimonyInspired by Eddie’s appearance on beaut.ie blather the other day*, we’re going to bring you a series of articles dedicated to finding cheapo versions of those expensive products we all want to get our manicured talons on. Eddie is a bit of a boring old fecker it must be said – all that saving and scrimping he advises – yawn. I mean, you can’t take it with you, can you? He doesn’t exactly speak to the average young woman with spending power and a large product wish list in her head. Save it all Mr. Hobbs? ARE YOU MAD!? Don’t you know there’s a new MAC collection out?

But, to be fair, there’s nothing wrong with saving a bit of cash, because that way you can always put it towards more fabuolus purchases! Hurray! We’ve already written about ways to go about this for a post we did for tcal.net before The Christmas, so it’s a subject close to our hearts.

truly cherishEddie’s first tip for us is how to smell like you’re wearing Angel by Thierry Mugler, but on a teeny tiny budget – let us say, a budget equivalent to drinking 8 cans of coke each day for a week.

Angel is a unique cult scent, which contains notes of chocolate, vanilla and patchouli – it’s heady, sweet and not for the faint of heart. And expensive – 50ml Eau de Parfum will set you back about €80. Eek! So before you take Eddie’s usual advice of consolidating your loans, or re-mortgaging to afford it, head over to M&S.

Their Truly Cherish eau de toilette seems like an excellent substitute – it comes in a not a million miles away angular type glass bottle, it’s pale blue in colour, and scent wise, it contains notes of caramel, patchouli, vanilla and jasmine. It’s also under twenty euro. Yes, you read me right. UNDER TWENTY EURO.

What would Eddie do? Ladies, I think we know the answer. Get thyself to an M&S with the quickness!

Stocking Fillers: Fruity Beauty from M&S

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

M&S’s Fruity Beauty range is gorgeous, perfect for stocking fillers and sure to please magpies like me who love shine and bright colours. Oh, and baths. So, Bird Baths, then! Geddit? Well, geddit? Oh ok, no more bad puns.

fruity beauty

The packaging is reminiscent of a funk-ified Philosophy and is sure to look good in any bathroom. In particular my bathroom, I hope. There are bath bubbles and shower jelly in pink punch, purple passion, and lucious lime; bath confetti; juicy cocktails bath tubes; bath caviar and crystals; body buttercreams and gift sets.

Prices are good too (£2.50-£9.50 STG) and lots of the products are part of their 3 for 2 Christmas promotion. Even better.
