Student Style: Trialling ELF Studio Minty Lip Gloss, Warm Bronzer & Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths

elf cosmetics

Elf was, for the lack of a Laser card, one of the few budget brands I had not tried out til recently. Despite the largely glowing reviews I’d heard from just about everyone, I’d never got around to taking the plunge – but I have to say, I now get what all the fuss is about.

Firstly, I love Elf’s packaging. It’s very like MAC and it may be my inner snob, but nice packaging just endears a product to me from the get go – Prestige, take note! The formula of the Minty Lip Gloss (1) was slightly disappointing – I think I was expecting something along the lines of California Kissin, but got more of a deathly-pale-lip effect. Still, the smell and tingle was yummy and the promise of fresh breath was definitely fulfilled.

Sacrilege aside, the Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths (2) were aaaaaamazing! I wouldn’t use them every day, just because my skin would probably blow up, but for a quick fix these are the best makeup wipes I’ve used. One does for your entire face and leaves it nicely moisturised. They’re quite lily-scented, which I didn’t like, but I’d put up with smelling like a garden centre if it meant not looking like a panda. No black eyes with these wipes!

It might be overly enthusiastic to say that the third time was the charm for my bronzer escapades, but this was the best of the bunch I’ve tried out. Warm Bronzer (3) comes in a sturdy palette with a great mirror and actually gave a bronzed effect as opposed to my recent mud-bath experiences. Three colours with a slight shimmer are just the right mix of light colour and sparkle.

Lastly, I trialled Mineral Lip Liner in Rose (4). This was my perfect liner colour, very similar to a MAC liner in Dervish that has graced my makeup bag for years. Great quality and minimal packaging won a thumbs up from me for this.

All products are €4, excepting Mineral Lip Liner which is €3.50, and can be bought online from eyeslipsface.co.uk.

ELF Studio Blush in Candid Coral

elf studio blush in candid coral

The first thing that I am sure is meant to spring to mind when you open ELF’s Candid Coral from their Studio range is that it’s a dead-ringer for Nars’ Orgasm. And yes, it’s coral, it comes in a similarly-sized black case and it has some golden shimmer.

There the similarities end. For starters, this costs a mere €4 and to compare it to something so high end isn’t fair or reasonable really, because it doesn’t stack up against Orgasm – but that doesn’t mean it’s without its own merits.

This is very sheer, and I think that’s a bit of a plus, actually: there is nothing worse than applying blusher only to discover that the meagre amount you thought you were buffing on has transformed you into Bosco. There’s no danger of that with this, but the colour is buildable, making it a good pick for blusher nervos or anyone who likes to use a light hand or achieve a natural-looking result.

The shade is good too – this is very pretty and coral is a good colour for most Irish skintones I think – it warms up a pale complexion and if you’re sallower, it accentuates that too. It’s bright, summery and very wearable, which helps me overlook the texture of it a bit – you’re not getting silky-smooth, triple-milled luxury here, and it can be a bit gritty in patches, with the powder looking a little bumpy after a few uses.

But the bottom line with all Elf products is really the amazing price-points they sell at. For €4, this is very good, lets be honest. No other budget brand that I’ve used – barring Essence – is selling products you actually can use day-in and day-out and which exceed expectations for the price-point, so thumbs up for that.

Studio Blush comes in ten shades and can be bought online from www.eyeslipsface.co.uk; a swatch is after the cut.

Line up: ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner

elf studio liner

Elf sent us a parcel of their Studio goodies recently and being the swot that I am, I’ve been duitfully testing and trying away – and here’s review number one.

Lets start with all the positives about Studio Cream Eyeliner, shall we? It’s an amazing price, at just €4 for 4.7g, with four shades on offer. Packaging is nice – nothing amazingly wow but again, great for the small outlay. What’s best about this is what’s inside: this cream liner is, well, really creamy, decently black and opaque – so only one swipe is needed for each eye – and goes on like a dream with no drag or awkwardness, which there can be with firmer textured liners. Neither is the texture too wet: in the words of Goldilocks, this is just right.

But it’s not all good news I’m afraid. This smudges on me.  Quite badly actually, despite my dry lids, and it had done reverse-clown circles on my upper lids within a couple of hours. Ok, when you’re paying €22 for a pot of Bobbi Brown gel liner you would be really frigging annoyed if it budged and that’s partly why you do pay a premium – those liners are rock-solid. But for €4, you just can’t expect the sun, moon and stars so all that’s required here is a lick of primer first to keep this in place, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s a decent trade-off within the context of all the positives this product’s got going for it. Interested? You’ll find it on www.eyeslipsface.co.uk.

Psst: I’ve been using a Make Up For Ever 3p brush with this, and accidentally left the brush head out of the shot. DOH. It’s a lip brush as far as I’m aware, but its small tapered head is great for creating thick cats’ eye flicks too and it works really nicely with this liner. Oh, and there’s a swatch after the cut ‘n all.

Budget Beaut.ies: ELF Studio Line

elf studio line

That there pic above is of some ELF goodies the brand sent me recently to stick my curious fingers into. Look a bit different from their normal offerings, don’t they? Well, that’s cos they’re from the Studio line, a more expensive ‘pro’ extension the brand added last year.

And by expensive, I’ve got to point out that this is a relative concept, because we’re still taking tiny prices – the pic above features blush in Candid Coral, a shimmer palette, concealer pencil with brush and a cream eyeliner. All cost €4.

Yes. That’s right. Four euro.

Packaging is way nicer with this stuff than with the regular offerings and with the blush, you’d nearly fool casual observers that it’s Nars Orgasm, as the compact is so similar (barring a plastic as opposed to rubber finish and a see-through panel in the lid, which is actually really handy should you have more than one of these in your stash).

The shimmer palette is a generous size and contains four  silky pearlised shades you can use on the face in a variety of ways – solo or over foundation on on cheekbones, in the cupids bow of the lips, down the nose, or in fact, anywhere you felt could benefit from a bit of added radiance. Fancy a closer look at the other bits?

Put to The Test: e.l.f Custom Eyes Eyeshadow

elf

Lynnie told you all about e.l.f recently and I’ve been a slave to road-testing some of their products over the last while too.  No doubt I’ll write about a few more of them shortly, but right now, lets have a little chat about their Custom Eyes eyeshadows.

At €1.68 a pop, I didn’t have high hopes. The outer packaging is uninspiring and you open it to reveal a naked pan of shadow (the same size as MAC, if I’m not mistaken), which you can then  pop into a palette, also €1.68. For the price, it’s not bad at all – a fairly chunky white plastic case opens to reveal four wells, into which the pans stick magnetically. There’s also a decent mirror.

I dutifully slapped in three shadows (Pink Ice, Golden Glow and Sage) and looked at them. Bit dubious. They’re very soft and crumbly to the touch, and as talc is the second ingredient listed, I was ready to write them off completely.

Throwing out the little spongey applicator that came with them, and in a hurry en-route to the ModelCo launch, I thought I’d check out Sage. I’ve been on a MAC Sumptuous Olive trip recently, so while Sage is more matte, it’s very similar in shade, and I thought it’d work.

gnome

The name e.l.f. will probably ring bells with lots of you, and that’s likely to be because they’re raved about in blogs and magazines from here to the back arse of Timbuktu. Despite what the name might suggest, this isn’t a brand dedicated to the beautification of pixies and flower fairies: the acronym stands for Eyes Lips Face (although I still can’t help picturing garden gnomes coming to life and making each other over and saying things like “Ooooh Norm, I tell you what, that blush is only fabilis on you!” in a Scouser accent.)

Launched by make-up artist Scott Vincent Borba (nope, me neither, but apparantly he’s also the man behind Hard Candy cosmetics) in Noo Yawk in 2004 and in the UK in 2007, e.l.f. are famed for producing seriously low cost make-up that doesn’t scrimp on quality. The prices are totally budgettastic – no individual product from their main lines costs more than £1.50, be it a plumping lip gloss or an eyelash curler. Their mineral make-up line is fractionally dearer, although you still wouldn’t need to go begging to the Credit Union to have a little splurge. We’re talking £3.50 for a pot of talc free mineral foundation, like. And they’re not looking to crucify you on the postage front, either: shipping is a flat £3.95 for standard European delivery.

I have my beady little eye on a rake of the nail varnishes, which are free from nasties like toluene, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate (or DBP to its friends) but are decidedly more purse friendly than Butter London’s 3 Free offerings.

Has anyone tried any of their stuff? What did you make of it?

e.l.f Cosmetics

Friday, December 1st, 2006

elfWhat could be more perfect for Christmas than a cosmetics brand called e.l.f?

What it actually stands for is Eyes Lips Face, and it’s a really, really cheap brand who claim that their “philosophy is that beauty comes from within” and that they believe  “that innovative technology, quality ingredients and superb delivery systems should not be limited to prestige retailers. Every woman should have the opportunity to participate in innovation, without sacrificing her budget”. And budget it is – loads of the products retail at £1! True to their word, they don’t skimp on what’s important – the range is designed with daily use in mind and the products contain sunscreens, and are suitable for those with problem skin.

Cheap treats include a lush sounding Shimmering Facial Whip which is a multipurpose, on-the-go facial shimmer cream which is packed full of vitamins B, C and E. It’s like cheapo HighBeam! Their Shielding Gloss range is fortified with SPF15 and comes in 6 shades, and face products include Tone Correcting Concealer and Clarifying Pressed Powder.

There are also products for nails and a tool range which includes brushes, eyelash curlers, toe separators and pencil parers – and all at a mere pound sterling each. You’d be hard pressed to spend a tenner, but I think I’m definitely going to try!
