Student Style: Trialling ELF Studio Minty Lip Gloss, Warm Bronzer & Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths

elf cosmetics

Elf was, for the lack of a Laser card, one of the few budget brands I had not tried out til recently. Despite the largely glowing reviews I’d heard from just about everyone, I’d never got around to taking the plunge – but I have to say, I now get what all the fuss is about.

Firstly, I love Elf’s packaging. It’s very like MAC and it may be my inner snob, but nice packaging just endears a product to me from the get go – Prestige, take note! The formula of the Minty Lip Gloss (1) was slightly disappointing – I think I was expecting something along the lines of California Kissin, but got more of a deathly-pale-lip effect. Still, the smell and tingle was yummy and the promise of fresh breath was definitely fulfilled.

Sacrilege aside, the Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths (2) were aaaaaamazing! I wouldn’t use them every day, just because my skin would probably blow up, but for a quick fix these are the best makeup wipes I’ve used. One does for your entire face and leaves it nicely moisturised. They’re quite lily-scented, which I didn’t like, but I’d put up with smelling like a garden centre if it meant not looking like a panda. No black eyes with these wipes!

It might be overly enthusiastic to say that the third time was the charm for my bronzer escapades, but this was the best of the bunch I’ve tried out. Warm Bronzer (3) comes in a sturdy palette with a great mirror and actually gave a bronzed effect as opposed to my recent mud-bath experiences. Three colours with a slight shimmer are just the right mix of light colour and sparkle.

Lastly, I trialled Mineral Lip Liner in Rose (4). This was my perfect liner colour, very similar to a MAC liner in Dervish that has graced my makeup bag for years. Great quality and minimal packaging won a thumbs up from me for this.

All products are €4, excepting Mineral Lip Liner which is €3.50, and can be bought online from eyeslipsface.co.uk.

Evil as Ever: Boots Expert Sensitive Cleansing & Toning Wipes

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Bless me Estée Lauder, for I have sinned. On no fewer than two occasions during the past week, I have turned to the dark side before turning in for the night.

That’s right. I used cleansing wipes to remove my make-up.

Twice.

To avoid temptation, I try not to keep the infernal things in the house. But while having a major clearout last week, I came across a packet of Boots Expert Sensitive Cleansing & Toning wipes that had somehow snuck into the gaff. (They’re sneaky like that.) Like a fool, I didn’t really pay them too much heed and just left them on my bedside locker to be dealt with at a later date rather than shrieking and holding them at arms length while racing to the nearest bin and slam dunking them into its depths.

This meant they were within easy reach when my defences were down on two nights that I was completely exhausted and cold and wanted nothing more than to crawl straight into bed. They smiled and nodded as I reasoned that it was better to hit the hay sans make-up than with a full face of day-old slap, and made reassuring noises while I decided that they’d be okay just this once twice, that using them meant I could do my cleansing in bed – and sure weren’t they for sensitive skin?!

My skin vehemently disagreed, however, and punished my laziness by going a bit psycho. I’m still sorting out the dehydrated patches and spots that those effing wipes left in their wake.

And yes – they are now, finally, in the bin.

Deliver us from cleansing wipes, oh Vichy…

We all know the importance of thoroughly cleansing to remove make-up and grime and impurities before we hit the leaba. But it just seems like such a pain in the arse of an exercise sometimes – eye make-up remover, cleanser, toner… yaaawn. Sure, you could use a cleansing wipe, but I believe that they’re the work of Satan himself and won’t even keep a pack in the house.

As a distinctly less devilish alternative, might I suggest Vichy’s Purete Thermale One Step Cleanser? It’s a 3-in-1 wipe-off cleansing milk infused with Vichy thermal spa water which removes all eye and face make-up and tones the skin in one go. Hypoallergenic and pH balanced, it can be used without irritation even on sensitive skin and eyes and is suitable for all skin types.

See, there are easy peasy ways to cleanse without having to sell your soul!

garnier clean detox

Yep, I say it often enough, I am a slave to cleansing oils, but sometimes – especially after 95 wines – I slip a little.

Which is why I always have a sneaky emergency pack of cleansing wipes on hand. And I know I’m not the only one prone to a little cheating now and then. After all, the way I look at it is this: while wipes are by no means ideal way to deep cleanse, at least using them occasionally when a tad inebriated is better than going to bed with the makeup mask still on, isn’t it?

My current sneaky, cheatin’ wipes ‘o choice are Garnier’s Clean Detox ones. They smell nice, do a daycent job of removing the slap, are easy to find in supermarkets and chemists. I am perfectly content with them for emergency use.

So, what do you guys have on hand for lazy makeup removal emergencies? Or do you just detest them and refuse point blank to have them in the house?

no 7

Yiz were chattin’ in blather about face wipes yesterday. These things are like the scourge of the devil – they seem to mush your makeup round your face, and you’ll never convince me that something that gets that grubby is leaving your face cleansed as well as toned and moisturised. I always end up using about twenty of them and I try to restrict that usage to when I’m utterly pissed or when I’m away, and don’t really have that much room for all my cosmetic ephemera in my case, what with needing to pack 5 pairs of shoes for a 3 night stay etc.

Best Facial Cleansing Wipes?

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I don’t really know why I keep buying these things – they’re handy, I suppose. But I’m always left with the nagging feeling that my face isn’t quite clean enough, so I end up using about 4 each time. I’ve tried so many of them – Nivea, Simple, Boots own brand ones, Nutrogena – pretty much anyone who makes them, I’ve tried them.

olay wipesLast time I went to get some in the supermarket they were doing a cheap offer on Olay Daily Facials Express (yes, I know it must seem like Olay are paying us, but rest assured they are not. Sadly) so I got them. And while they don’t quite live up to their own hype they are a good bit better than other brands – each wipe is a decent size and not as flimsy as some can be. You can apparently use them to take off waterproof eye makeup too but a word of warning – they sting like hell. Use something else to take your mascara off with!
