All I Want For Christmas is Candles From Cloon Keen Atelier

cloon keen

I’m currently burning a gorgeous scented candle from Galway’s Cloon Keen Atelier, very generously gifted to me by the shop’s owner, Maggie, when we were over for our Galway book signing a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had candles from the shop before and have always been impressed by the packaging, the scents and the burn-time.

But the thing that’s possibly most impressive about Cloon Keen’s offerings is how affordable they are for the quality. As nice as those many times the price, their spa collection candles cost just €17.95, are really generously-sized and burn for 40-50 hours. Each comes in a white, ribbon-trimmed circular box, and they make just THE perfect present.  You can ramp it up a little more with the Atelier collection, larger again at €24.95.

We’ve written about the company’s lovely Linden Blossom collection before as well and they also do a line of gourmet tinned candles for €14.95. The three christmassy offerings in metallic wrappings, Christmas Morning, Christmas Pomander and Christmas Tree, proved too much for me and my browsing, were swiftly added to my cart and are hopefully winging their way eastwards as I type. Yay!

Could Your Candles Be Carcinogenic?

candles

We’ve been busy debating the merits of fancy ‘spensive candles on the Blather over the last few days, trying to decide whether a Jo Malone would trump a Diptyque and how a Cloon Keen Atelier offering might stack up against a Max Benjamin number. So I was thinking of y’all when I came across a study that was presented orally to the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Washington on 19th August last.

That study was conducted at South Carolina State University, and reported that burning paraffin wax candles releases harmful fumes into the air of your home, including some toxins that have been linked to asthma and eczema as well as known human carcinogens. This was said to be because burning candles doesn’t produce high enough temperatures to completely combust the heavy molecules contained in paraffin wax. This in turn led to the formation and emission of the potentially hazardous molecules.

Beeswax and soy candles, by contrast, were not found to produce the same amounts of indoor air pollutants.

One of the researchers did state that the emissions of an odd paraffin candle was unlikely to have any adverse effects but cautioned against prolonged exposure to multiple lighted paraffin candles (as in every day for years) or lighting them frequently in unventilated areas.

Roses are… pink – so says Diptyque anyway

Diptyque

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Diptyque has relaunched its gorgeous Roses candle in a limited edition pink version. Packed in a pretty pink box adorned with Liberty print roses, my only fear is that it may in fact turn out to be one of those candles that you can’t bear to burn. The pricetag is high, but then so is the price of a bunch of roses at this time of year, and this candle will probably still be emitting its divine scent long after the flowers have shed their dried up petals.

Priced at €58, the Pink Roses candle is available from Diptyque at Brown Thomas.

Extremely Posh Candles for Christmas

candles

The day job as a beauty editor means a lot of swag comes my way. I can’t use it all, so family and friends do very well out of me – lotions, potions and shades that aren’t right for my skin get farmed out to my army of willing testers.

But the one thing I’ll hardly ever give away is a candle. I friggin’ love candles. Keeping them in a special cupboard, I take them out as needed and happily sacrifice to a flame. Right now ESPA’s Christmas-tastic Warming Aromatic Candle is the one of choice, and I’ve been hoarding some incredible Apothia and Origins ginger ones too for ages. And sure of course, if goes without saying, a Jo Malone offering is a prized one indeed. In general, it’s the posher the better for this scented candle-lovin’ lady.

And I’m not alone – who among us doesn’t like a super-duper-swanky candle? Yup, thought so. They’re not something you buy yourself, though, are they? Nope, but these money-no-object burners are perfect present fodder. Here are the six I’d adore to get this festive season.

space nk for Christmas

Space NK is really expensive, isn’t it? Nope, I’ve discovered. While there’s no doubt the store carries luxury lines that aren’t cheap, there are loads of bits and bobs on the shelves that’ll keep any beauty junkie happy come Christmas morning. My pick of the glorious goodies on offer at the new branch in Harvey Nicks, Dundrum, are all under €30. (1) is Space NK Champaca Minatures, €27, containing Bath Oil, Shower Gel and Body Lotion.  (2) is a 15ml bottle of Laughter, €27, the store’s iconic fragrance. It’s a citrussy spritz with top notes of bergamot, grapefruit and lime, along with juniper berry, verbena and the sweet, spicy bite of ginger. (3) €20 bags you this Christmas Votive, a blend of Douglas fir, cinnamon, nutmeg and cranberry, all enveloped in a warm amber base. Yum! (4) last up is assorted effervescent bath tablets, also €20.

If you fancy heading in-store tomorrow to pick up a few goodies then you might also be interested in this: Space NK founder Nicky Kinnaird will be in Harvey Nicks for an exclusive event, taking place from 6.30pm-7.30pm. You’ll have the opportunity to hear her speak as you sip champers and enjoy canapes, and of course, you’ll be able to ask all those burning beauty questions, too.  There are a small number of tickets for the event left, costing €30, and they can be booked through Harvey Nichols, 01 291 0488.

In which Himself outdoes, er, Himself: Jo Malone votive candle set

jo.jpg

So from my whingeing whimpering on the Blather last week, many of you will be painfully aware that Himself was off gallivanting. Oh sure, it was with work. And yes, it was for training purposes. But when word started to filter through that there were bus tours, hire of trucks (or “big jeeps” to those of us not Americanified by a week in Boston), walking on hot coals, fancy seafood dinners and shopping time involved, I began to feel very hard done by indeed, schlepping 55 miles to and from the office in the rainy darkness and spending evenings looking at the dog.

Blub!

Anyways, he arrived home yesterday morning and bestowed upon me a rather large Jo Malone bag – at which point I nearly fell off the edge of the bed.  He’d only been gone for a week, after all, and who knew that he’d ever even heard of Jo Malone? Inside was a long gift box nestled in black crepe-y paper which, I was later informed, the sales assistant had fragranced with a mist of perfume. Fancy. One prised-off black grosgrain ribbon and an opened lid later, and every one of the brand’s dozen famous candles in cute miniature were looking up at me, each one smelling more intoxicatingly divine than the last.

Jo Malone scented candles and other goodies aren’t really the sort of thing that people tend to buy for themselves: they’re super pricey, for a start, very much luxury items to most of us, and there’s always the issue of which of the myriad of scents to go for if you’re choosing for yourself!

As a gift for someone special, though, I think any of her candles in any size would be a real winner – hey, I’ve forgiven the stupid American “truck” thing completely – and definitely worth bearing in mind with De Chrissmisss fast approaching…

Not heading to Saks in Boston any time soon? Brown Thomas stock Jo Malone; set of 12 mini votive candles €160.

ghee

We get a lot of email at beaut.ie.

On a daily basis, hundreds of press releases, reader queries and emails from people trying to flog us stuff pour into our inboxes. But today, I got an email that made me giggle a lot.

“We think you are in the market for candles”, it said. I am?? Wow – they know me better than I know myself! “We avail ourselves of this opportunity to approach you for the establishment of trade relations with you”, it continued.

Right so, what did they have on offer? “We are a specialized manufacturer and exporter of various Ghee* Scented Candles with different fragrances”, trumpeted the message.

Ah lads. You can’t be sending emails to people in Ireland offering to sell them ghee scented candles. ESPECIALLY ones that are available in different fragrances.

*yes, I know ghee is a clarified Indian butter but for the purposes of this post, we’re not mentioning that

SO Impressed with Cloon Keen Atelier

Cloon Keen Atelier

Galway has a well kept beauty secret: Cloon Keen Atelier. A family run business, you might already know them for their gorgeous candles. But if they’re not yet on your radar, they soon will be, as the recent launch of the 191 Lindenblossom body care range is going to catapult them into stylish bathrooms everwhere.

That fab, high-end packaging – wouldn’t chunky black glass, embellished card and silver fixings look amazing in your house? – hides some pretty delicious smells too. I oohed and ahhed as I lifted the products out of their be-ribboned tissue, and the proof is in the pudding – they’re all now in use in my bathroom.

But such niceness has to come at a cost, doesn’t it? Check after the cut for the terrifying prices.

Scented candles: oh yeah baby

jomalone.jpg

I have to admit I’m a total sucker for scented candles. There’s nothing more indulgent than lighting the expensive candle, pouring the wine and then running the bubble bath, is there?

But when you’re buying candles it doesn’t pay to cut corners. Cheapie candles are just sprayed on the outside with scent – that’s why they’re cheap. Luxury candles – the likes of Jo Malone for example – are infused throughout with gorgeous fragrances and oils so the scent lasts and lasts and can easily perfume a whole room (or house). Nue Blu Erui have their own range of candles which are gorgeous, Marks and Spencer do a very fine line in candles and at the moment I’m burning a yummy Yon-ka candle.

What are your favourites? And which ones would you steer us clear of?
