Doggy Diva night: show your support for a girl’s best friend

Monday, May 17th, 2010

If you love animals then this is a great opportunity to show your support for the woofing ones. Dogs Aid is a purely voluntary organisation and really need our support to continue doing their great work.

And what better way to support them than this? Lots of beauty tips, clothes advice and that all important goodie bag will be yours on the night as well as more than a few giggles we’re sure. We’re especially intrigued by the instruction to “bring a long or square scarf”. What can that be all about?

Only one way to find out eh? See you there!

Doggy Divas takes place on Thursday 20th May at 7pm. See visual above for more details and check out the website at www.dogsaid.ie to find out more ways you can help

Fat Cat

One of my cats is FAT.

I used to think Spice was just cute and cuddly – but now he looks as though his head is too small for his body. Everyone who comes into the house laughs cruelly at him. Shauna calls him Rick Waller.

I’ve tried to covertly cut down on his food – but when you’ve two other cats like I do it’s quite difficult. He gobbles his food and then pushes the others out of the way and eats theirs. So as you can see it’s not a metabolic problem. It’s a greedy pig problem.

To be honest I don’t have the time to be supervising them all. In the mornings on the way out to work, the food goes into the bowls and I’m out the door.

So I brought him to the vet. Who agreed he was at risk of diabetes and so on. But laughed his head off at the thought of putting him on a diet.

“It won’t work” he scoffed. “Sure he’s nice fat. That’s his breed type”.

Spice is a Premier Champion cat, a Best of Breed and all that. Well he was. But now he’s let himself go so much theres not much chance of him winning any more rosettes.

Has anyone else had an animal that they successfully dieted? I’d be grateful for any tips!

Shocking Report on Animal Testing from Lush

While browsing the Lush website the other day, I came across a statement from them on the current status of animal testing in the beauty industry. Depressing reading. Let us know your thoughts in a comment.

Paul Mitchell Hair Care…for yer dog

john paul pet

Oh yes, there’s more. Aphrodite blogged about pet perfumes the other day, and I’ve found something else for us all to be, er, whelmed by.

One half salon successes Paul Mitchell went off and created John Paul Pet, a range of grooming products for dogs. Yup. There are shampoos and CONDITIONERS plus face and eye wipes. Salon quality too, apparently.

What do yiz reckon? Would you buy for your pampered pooch?

Pet perfumes: no more Eau de Wet Dog

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Ah god knows we love em. Those bundles of fur who look up at us so adoringly, who love us no matter what, who are so loyal and trusting.

But they can’t half whiff. Cats are normally fine* – but dogs – ugh. Dogs can stink. Through no fault of their own (or their owners). So no wonder that a whole industry of Pet Perfumery has sprung up.

Now you can go that bit further than spraying Fabreeze or Oust over the dog basket. You can scent your animal with a delightful fragrance. But Pawticularlyfine.com goes a bit too far in its over enthusiastic endorsement of Oh MyDog! perfume methinks. Apparently “a number of family members use and enjoy these products themselves!”

Jaysus. Can you imagine the comments if anyone found out?

* The exception to this is a cat who has accidentally walked in something unpleasant. Known in our house as “poo paws”, the offending animal is picked up at arms length and he, and his offending malodorous paws, are hastily put out the back door.

BTs to go Fur Free from February!

fur free

The luxury rooms of BTs are almost perfect. Crammed as they are with the gorgeous designer clothes and the fantastic cosmetics. A by-word for everything stylish and elegant in Irish life.

But one thing was wrong. Very wrong. BTs are one of the few places in Ireland to still sell animal fur. People often say to me though: Whats wrong with wearing fur anyway? I mean, I eat meat, I wear leather…

Well if you don’t know what’s wrong with wearing fur then I suggest you go off and Google how fur animals are killed. There. That’ll put a stop to your cough.

So we’re thrilled at Beaut.ie to congratulate the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) who celebrate a well deserved victory tomorrow. Brown Thomas has declared its intention to make the company Fur Free from February 2008.

The Animal Rights Action Network have campaigned for many years to urge BTs to go fur free. This has taken enormous effort, goodwill and sustained mobilisation of the Animal Rights troops.

Also fur free and proud are Cleary’s, Debenhams, Roches Stores, Marks & Spencer, Dunnes, Next, Top Shop, Karen Millen and many more.

If you’d like to email BTs to thank them for making this move you can email their Women’s Wear Buying Director Stephen Sealey

And from all of us at Beaut.ie we’d like to say – fantastic news!

Brands Not Tested on Animals

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

bunny

I noticed a couple of you blathering about brands who test on animals and finding it very hard to find makeup that’s cruelty free. Rest assured ladies, it’s a cinch.

Off the top of my head, companies that do not test on animals are: Aveda, The Body Shop, Bobbi Brown, Bare Escentuals, Clarins, Hard Candy, Origins, Organic Glam,Dr Hauschka, Lavera and quite seriously, a ton more. Going organic is usually a good start – the guidelines these companies follow to achieve certification usually involve them being ethical about what they’re creating anyway.

Check the caringconsumer.org website for a full list of PETA approved beauty brands who don’t test (and those who do) and there’s also a listing of vegan brands too.

ISPCA - caring for all animals

Animals are more beautiful then we can ever be. They need to be loved and cherished, rescued from danger and cruelty and given loving and safe places to live.

And lets not forget that some of the beauty products we all love so much are (or were once) tested on animals. So here’s our chance to give something back.

Support the ISPCA by giving a donation, becoming a member, giving an animal a home, fundraising, or getting involved with one of their many campaigns. What better time to do it then World Animal Week!

Horrid Beauty secrets #30,001: Debbie Harry’s black lamb embryo injections

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

blacksheep.jpgNo Debbie Harry isn’t the Horrid Beauty Secret.
But what she does to her face certainly is.

It is with amazement that I read that her beauty secret is derived from lamb embryos. And not any old lamb embryos – they must be black lambs. Why? No idea. But that’s the crazy old world of celeb beauty secrets eh. She’s been having these “fresh cell” injections since she’s been 35 and proclaims them to be a logical response to the ageing process – simply getting new cells injected into her face.

Well we can all see how well this approach is working. So if you’re joining a queue to get this done I ask – do you need your head examined? Baa to that.

OPI pawlish

Yup, someone had to think of it, and that someone was OPI, the makers of A list faves like Lincoln Park. They’ve created Pawlish, nail varnish for our barky pals. OPI polishes are durable, really long lasting, come in tons of shades, and celebs and us mere mortals alike love them. And now so can man’s best friends – they can try out one (or more) of the six doggie shades on offer to jazz up their paws. And of course this also means they can co-ordinate perfectly with whatever little coat they have on that day. Very important for the pampered pooch.

If you and your dog can’t live without some pawlish, then get over to www.trixieandpeanuts.com where you can buy for a mere ten dollars.
