Matching the Carpet to the Pelmet: The Perils of Eyebrow Dyeing

Debbie Harry

Bellasugar’s recent poll, Do You Dye Your Eyebrows to Match Your Hair?, sparked a (forcibly repressed) memory with me. A couple of years ago I encountered a bottle blonde with something odd going on: she was quite obviously faux – and of course, that’s all grand and fine – but for one thing: she’d dyed her brows to match. And they looked odd. Very odd.

In fact, so sort of orange and weird were they, that I became somewhat transfixed by them. I could not stop staring. They advertised utterly the fakeness of her hair, which I think I’d have overlooked had she left them her natural darker shade. Because we’re just not generally used to blondes matching the carpet to the curtains, to use a horrid blokey analogy (should it be the carpet to the pelmet, in this case?), are we? So they really stood out. I mean – would Marilyn Monroe have caved and matched? Would Debbie Harry have complied and lightened? Nah. No way.

Like fashion, I say a firm no to matchy-matchy, and so the moral of the tale is, pimp your hair platinum by all means, but leave the brows to nature.

That’s just my tuppence worth though – what do you lot think?

My hair is currently 2 different colours…not sure i would manage to match my eyebrows to it….:)

  • AnnieH says:

    Oops…meant 3 different colours…

  • blondie says:

ide never match my eyebrows to blonde hair it just doesnt look tight i think exp if ur platium blonde

  • Kirstie says:

different if you’re naturally blonde and you darken it I think – that does tend to necessitate a bit of eyebrow darkening.

  • Big Eyes says:

Ooh def no no no to dyeing ur eyebrows blonde the dark eyebrows are a look, saying that when i was 15 after a year of dyeing my hair evry shade of red and it finlly being purpleish i asked the colourist at toni and guy to dye my hair dark brown to match my eyebrows and somehow i came out with blonde hair hmmm maybe i mumbled lol!

  • rosey says:

Argh! Debbie Harry has no arms!

  • Newbie says:

I had my hair platinum blonde until Christmas ( :( ) when I 1st got it done I wanted to lighten up my brows a ill so my hair would look for natural but after a day or two of contemplation ( THANK GOD! ) I decided against it . Your eye brows frame your face and once you have a nice shape on them you don’t need to dye them . They will just look ridiculous!!

  • Newbie says:

    LOL

  • Newbie says:

LOL that should have read “lighen up my brows a lil so my hair would look more natural” sorry girls!

  • Laura says:

Aren’t your eyebrows supposed to be a couple of shades darker than your hair anyway?

Me, I’d love eyebrows that were visible without the help of Ms Bobbi Brown. I’ve tried letting beauty therapists dye them, but they’ve always looked way too dark.

  • blondie says:

LOL Newbie. What colour did u put over the platium blonde to get it out.

  • Newbie says:

I put a dark brown over it the 1st time my mate did it for me he’s a hair dresser it didnt turn out that dark but the 2nd time it came up lovely! Nearly my natural colour!

  • Newbie says:

Ha ha rosey I just noticed that now :L

  • sorey says:

Your eyebrows are about 3 shades darker than your natural hair colour anyway. So, obviously if you dye your hair lighter, your eyebrows are going to appear much darker by sheer contrast. I do think really dark eyebrows and really blonde hair looks odd though- always reminds me of my French teacher at school who had pitch black eyebrows and BLONDE BLONDE hair, haha. I have dabbled in the idea but would be too scared to buy a kit or something DIY as I know I’d probably end up blind or with no brows at all. Lots of the celebs have something done though, it’s really obvious when they change hair colour and suddenly their brows are blonde too! That said, I study before and after pictures very closely ;)

I have strawberry blond hair naturally and its now highlighted blonde. My eyebrows are so fair you can only see a few hairs – the ones in the centre. I have to tint mine cos otherwise they can’t be seen. So my eyebrows are naturally lighter than my hair colour but I tint them darker cos otherwise it looks ridiculous!

  • I agree, makes perfect sense to me to not do the matchy matchy thing.

  • Glitterkitty says:

my hair is naturally v thick and medium blonde in colour.. goes v light in sun but underneath can be darker in winter

i dye my hair platinum blonde but body hair is practically transparent, inclu eyebrows
i always, always pencil in my eyebrows, 1, so important for framing your face, i don’t understand unkempt brows, ruins entire face and
2 so that you can actuially see them, kinda like 1 above but more to take the ‘weirdness’ away

a great pencil for blondes is the rimmel ‘hazel’

dying eyebrows lighter to match obviously dyed hair on head – yuck.. don’t

  • sorey says:

Yeah deedles, I meant in general! I have friends who are natural blondes (i.e. really, really light blonde) and they barely have eyebrows! I think I’d like mine a few shades lighter :(

  • April says:

Im naturally blonde too -never let the sun on my face as they disappear altogether – tried the dyeing (professionally of course) big mistake way too dark- so now I stick to Smashbox Browtech for blondes I can highly recommend it for other naturally fair ladies.

  • Townygirl says:

i’m ashamed to say i thought you meant other areas when i first read the title of this post. lol

i don’t colour my hair or eyebrows but i still have much darker brows than hair. which is weird

  • Jen says:

I have the opposite problem in a way. My hair is naturally very very blonde and my eyebrows and practically white. I tint them a bit darker so that I can actually see them!

  • tina says:

my hair is naturally dark blonde but my eye brows are naturally darker – not black, but dark enough.

  • Breige says:

I think if you dye your hair darker, then you should sort out your brows some way if it looks odd, like if you a natural blonde and dye your hair a deep brown, your eyebrows might look a but strange. and I kinda like the look of dark brows and light hair, I think there’s something kinda pin up about it.
and AnnieH, I have 3 colours in my hair at the moment, shouldn’t have dyed it black :(

  • KellBell says:

Oh dear, why in god’s name would you attempt to dye your eyebrows blonde? Debbie Harry looks fab with her bleached locks and dark eyebrows! I guess us brunettes can take some delight (mean i know) in the lengths you blondes have to go to :)

  • Tammy says:

Brows frame a face and are sooo important! If you get it wrong the entire face can look weird. I think that if you have very blonde hair and very dark brows it is worth lightening them… the key is to NOT match the hair but keep them a shade or two darker. If you have brows that aren’t visible… definately go darker with them. I think – keep em subtle and not OTT – definately in same ‘tone’ as your hair is a good thing! Me – every day use my angle brush and brown shadow :)

  • Ellenwaxer says:

Townygirl so did I  But my excuse is I had just dyed someones ladygarden pink so it was on my mind. lol
Tinting your brows can totally transform your face not matter is you’re blonde brown or redhead.

  • Flame says:

I think bleached blonde eyebrows would look awful alright! Have highlighted hair meself and use the rimmel hazel pencil everyday too, more to add a bit of definition than to darken, think eyebrows are so important.
One thing I DO hate is when women dye their hair blonde blonde and don’t even pluck their eyebrows, i mean when they’re all scraggly and caterpillar-like – i just don’t understand why, if you’d go to the bother of dying your hair to look nice, you wouldn’t neaten them up a bit!

  • MollC says:

Mascara is really useful for colouring your eyebrows if like me you have the dark hair but fair eyebrows thing going on. I find it looks more natural than pencil. I tend to use two mascaras, one for my eyelashes and one for my eyebrows. Dark eyebrows with fair hair usually looks fine, unless they’re really dark and bushy!

  • Speccy says:

my hair is naturally white (yes, I’m that old), but has blonde highlights. My eyebrows are still quite dark. I’d never dream of dyeing them lighter- waay too much potential for disaster. I just keep a fringe, and the brows fairly tidy!

  • Evanna says:

My eyebrows are white blonde, whereas my hair is a darker shade of blonde (would originally have been lighter). They are pretty much invisible without pencil, so 2 shades darker, def not the case here.

  • Lucy says:

I’m a natural blonde and my eyebrows are darker than my hair!
