12 Days of Detox: The Biscuit Habit

by Kirstie, January 14th, 2009 in Beauty News & Links |

bikkies

January’s miserable. Dieting is a trial, and detoxing is the spawn of satan. So this series of posts has been partly dedicated to things that make the whole process a little easier. Like cheating with green tea, detoxing a grim post-Christmas mood with uplifting perfume, and now, low calorie bikkies. Yay!

Shag off cabbage, says I, and come in and warm yourself by the fire, McVitie’s. These boyos spent three years and €6.6 million quid to de-fatten their digestives (also known to the Beaut.ie dad as ’suggestives’), Hob Nobs and Rich Tea, and the result is that they’re all now 50% less packed full of saturated fat than before. So concerned were they about making them as good as the originals that they did thorough sensory testing and consumer taste tests. And they did it all for us – lads, I’m welling up.

So the net result is that this year, you can have your biscuit and eat it, and not just stare at it sadly, while you chew on a bit of an auld stalk of celery. Toddle off to the shop right now to snap up a packet, or enter our really rather fabulous giveaway: FIFTY of you lucky people will win a pack of Hob Nobs AND a pack of Digestives, free gratis!

Jesus, are we good to you or what?  Entry info is after the cut.

COMPETITION CLOSED!

HOW TO ENTER: The first fifty entries will win! Just send your NAME and FULL POSTAL ADDRESS to competitions@beaut.ie, and mark your entry ‘McVities competition’

THE RULES: One entry per person, you must have an Irish address, north or south, there is no cash alternative and our decision is final. The competition closes once fifty complete entries have been received; and we never share your information with any third party.

So would you say that sandwiching two of the new and improved Digestives together with Nutella is now no more fattening that eating two plain old Digestives? Result!

  • Breige says:

    yay,biscuits!

  • Admin says:

xgirl – I would say, try it and see!

  • hockeysticks says:

oooooooh i love hobnobs .. they are one of the things i missed most when i was away travelling …. yum yum .. nothing better with a cuppa.

xgirl i like that idea .. low fat biccies and high fat filling .. a veritable utopia :-O
we used put butter (the real deal) on digestives when we were kids .. no wonder i have spent most of my 20’s in WW !! hee hee yum yum

  • Efa says:

Oh I loved butter on digestives. Grandad gave them to me……

  • sweetie1 says:

When they make low-fat milk choc biscuits I’ll be first in the Q….just love the ones in the USA tin with the jelly star! And all the choc ones in that tin actually! Oh and of course McVities choc hob-nobs & normal hob-nobs – the only non choc biccie I’d bother with!

  • I ADORE hobnobs…and now they’re low cal???Thats brilliant!

  • candi says:

i would like to know the actual calories of these. Pack says 50% reduced saturated fat – not total fat!! in my experience lower fat products still have nearly the same calorific value, and we all know excess calories are easily converted to fat by the body :(

  • Tiddles says:

Ah great…now ye’ve all gone and given me a HUGEASS craving for chocolate hobnobs. Well done.

    ;)

  • Admin says:

aha, good point, yes, I just checked, and the saturated fat is halved to .7g for each biscuit, but the calories are the same, 70 for a digestive and 67 for a hob nob. But then again, it’s the saturated fat that’s the real health demon, so you are getting a benefit.

  • Townygirl says:

i can’t eat biscuits they make me sneeze. but if i could this would be great. sigh. lol

  • candi says:

ah kirstie too good to be true! still less guilt when having your biscuit is always a good thing

  • Velveteen says:

Towny….biscuits make you sneeze??? You poor divil!!! I’m intrigued….all brands, or just certain ones?

  • Jenknee says:

Sweetie, the biscuits with the jelly star are my absolute favourites :-)

  • Sketcher says:

Now if only biscuits would make me sneeze, I might be able to avoid them.
Oh and thanks for giving me a craving for biscuits.
I am currently eating lots of gum in an attempt to stop snacking on chocolate at work.
I always have chocolate here with me in case of an emergency… ie me starving to death ;)

  • Boozy Floozy says:

mmm…nutella and digestives, a firm favourite in our house!

  • Townygirl says:

Velveteen. i’m intolerant to wheat. drives me mental!!

  • Ladywanderer says:

Ah… butter on digestives… that takes me back… YUM :-)

  • hockeysticks says:

i wonder would the lower fat digestives still work as a base for cheesecake and the like? i would imagine so .. therefore desserts just got healthier too :-O

  • Townygirl says:

    lol hockeysticks, you’re a genius

  • Admin says:

gals – keep up with the entries, not at 50 yet!

  • Speccy says:

I haven’t had a digestive (my absolutely favourite biscuit) for over a year as part of a health gain/ weight loss plan. And now, well sure they’re practically a health food!
( all too brief interlude while several stone come galloping towards my hips)

  • hockeysticks says:

towny .. its been said before :)

  • Sketcher says:

Well I entered but I wont eat them all myself but will try them :)

  • Hermione says:

sweetie1, jenkee,I’ve definitely seen packets of the jelly star biscuits in some shops. The WHOLE packet is just the biccies with the star. Is that not a brilliant idea?

  • Lynnie says:

Himself just rang me to tell me that biccies are good for him and that I can’t give out about it because he read it on Beaut.ie.

Apparantly we’re having a McVities feast for dinner.

  • sweetie1 says:

Skecther, try some nuts & raisins if you’re reslly struggling with the nibbles. The nuts will help you keep full cos they’ve protein and the raisins will help the sweet cravings. So hard to avoid stuff in work :(

  • sweetie1 says:

    Yay hermione :D

  • Sketcher says:

Sweetie I forgot to mention that I am addicted to pistachio nuts and go through a 200g bag in about 2 days.
I eat them after I finish my wrap at lunchtime and use them as a replacement for crisps.
I swear I could just keep eating them even the fact that the shells need to be broken doesn’t slow me down!

  • Rocky Road says:

This is the best news i’ve had all year!! … And so many ways to enjoy them- i like the low fat cheesecake idea hockeysticks!! :-)

  • SamSlater says:

    lol :)

  • Lyndsay says:

Low-fat Hobnobs, hot cup of tea, roaring fire and the telly – perfection!

  • Gingerrama says:

    *squeals with delight*
I have the roaring fire – and the cup of tea – but Spar’s just closed. Curses on my lack of forward planning and not having emergency supplies of nice biscuits.

  • NT says:

    Cool..
I hope Im not too late though..!! :D :)
