Fed up of trying to perfect the technique behind those GHD curls? Sick of spending aeons struggling with your curling tongs? Too broke to hand over your hard-earned to try heated rollers?
If the answer to these ceisteanna is yes, yes, and YES (and I don’t mean in a good, Herbal Essences ad kind of way) then join with me in heaving a sigh of release. For there is, ladies, a rather easier way to achieve loose waves in your hair – without having to shell out on yet another electrical appliance.
While hair is still a wee bit damp after washing, simply take sections that are a couple of inches wide (the looser the curl you want, the thicker each section should be) and twist them from root to tip. Then either keep twisting so that the sections begin to turn back on themselves and blast with your hairdryer, or coil each of the individual twists up to create a load of loose mini-buns, and pin to your head using something like these flat clips. That’s the lazy man’s route, because you can just leave them to dry naturally, and is great if you’re not in a rush. I like the latter option, of course, and have even been known to go to bed with me twists in. (See, this technique is so ridiculously easy, you can do it in your sleep!)
Once your hair’s dry, just unpin the mini-buns and shake those twists out, or gently comb through with fingers to separate.

well shes just gorgeous!
i used to do this in college for a night out, they always looked way better the following morn tho,,pity,..it does work,
Haven’t ever been able to get these looking good – but I think perhaps my hair’s always been that little bit too short. Whenever I do it like this, I always end up with it sticking up all over the shop and in every direction! Not good when you’re after nice curls for a night out! I think i’ll stick with my GHD curls for now until I find a way to get my hair to grow below my chin!
I’m going to try this – god knows SOMETHING has to work on my hair!
Oh yeay, I’m going to try this tonight. Really not good at the GHD curls. Thanks Lynnie
my hair is too short for this, sadly. Aphrodite, can’t you do GHD curls??
No – I’m useless at any self hair dos – I have to go to the hairdresser. If I do any curly shenanigans myself I just look like a frizzy poodle
I can only ever get the front of my hair right. and sure if I can’t see the back then no one can, is my logic.
Does anyone know where to get the curling wand yoke that was on The Afternoon Show 3 weeks ago on a Monday. It looks so good….
Do this if I’m on the way to a wedding thats abroad or even “down the country”. It can be done the night before By the time you get there just shake it out..works brilliantly
Let us know how you get on Suzannie!
does it matter which way you twirl them?
I find the tighter the better..no particular way though.
thanks scurge
I need to try this. I’m always trying to get that ‘polished’ wave ala Carrie Bradshaw.
Although yesterday I got my hair cut, very spur of the moment. I said I wanted loadsa volume and she blasted my hair dry and out in velcro rollers and stuck me under a nana lamp/dryer thing. Fab!
Then I walked out the door and it went back to flatsville.
ooooh! thanks what a good idea
my hair is looking a little battered from over ghd curling, prob not doing it right but i have my own way that pretty much works
does your hair have to be quite long for this 2 work right?
mine is just a teeny bit past my shoulders and layered.. dont want a dragged through bush backwards effect..
xxxx
Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area but how do you do GHD curls? I can just about manage straightening my hair!!
my hair is very thick, when i do this it looks like i have a mad afro/ perm!
it would take me ages to do all my hair in ghd curls eventhough i can do the basic curls so i never bother!
Ooh, so gonna try this, have naturally wavy hair, this sounds nice and polished or something though!
Tried this last night and without a hint of exaggeration, I ended up with an afro this morning. Thank god for ghds!
I tried this out last night. I think the curls came out a tiny bit too tight but it’s still nice. I think with a bit of practice it could turn out really well
O Lord Tish – perhaps looser curls. Sounds like it worked well for Suzannie. Did ye leave the little buns in over night? Or do the hair dryer thing?
I just give up on trying to do anything with my hair, ever. It’s pure evil and it hates me, even when I try to be nice to it.
Sweetie1 I gave it a quick blast of the hair dryer and left it up for the night, as the day is going on they are getting looser and more natural looking. Next time I’ll try doing it in thicker sections
Sweetie, I left them in over night. I have to say I gave myself a great laugh this morning, if nothing else! If I ever wanted to go to a party dressed as krusty the clown, i know what to do!
I might try it again with thicker sections – a lot thicker!
yup I had an afro too, definately need to do them thicker next time..or learn how to scrunch my hair
I’ve ridiculously thick hair to just above my shoulders – tried this and it works okay but it turns into a fuzzball in no time! Any tips on de-frizzing, or is my hair just a freakish mess?! Maybe I should leave it overnight….
Is anyone being transported back to the days of the ‘rag’? Irish dancers will know where Im coming from. Mumsie sits you down and wraps a section of your hair TIGHTLY around a rag and then wraps the rag around the hair and pins! Feis chic! This look really reminds me of that, I’m afraid it’s a no-go for me!
I was wondering if you heard of any shops/chemists sold citre curling mouse or would you know of any similar products that give the same effect, I’ve been looking for this for over 2 years since Boots stopped stocking it!!Any help gratefully received,
does this work for naturally curly/frizzy hair?? im desparate for natural waves because im tired of having to curl my hair! but if i ever find a wave tutorial that looks like it might work it only does for people with naturally straight hair
