So it’s official: the country’s in recession. While George Lee gleefully smirks “Nah nah nah nah nah, told you so” all over the airwaves, how is your beauty regime holding up under the strain? Have you taken to cutting your tubes of Beauty Flash Balm and the like in half to eke out every last bit? Are you using random soaps or conditioners that are lying about in place of specialised shaving unctions? Have you slashed your grooming budget to ribbons and become a dab hand at doing your own manis, pedis, hair colour and – eek! – bikini waxes?
Or sure maybe you’ve decided to stick two fingers up to the whole “R” thing and are splashing out on lovely treatments to cheer yourself up, or buying new beauty bits to, ehem, support the economy.

Re- cutting product bottles open, I’m a liz earle girl and janey mac the amount of stuff left when you cut the tubes open is crazy.
Well some salons seem to also be doing ‘specials’ so its not all bad. I just got a flyer in from a very good salon offering a great package ( Admin- you’ll have to tell me if I can divulge that info) and I offer discounted/loyalty prices for regular monthly clients. Like the ad says “every little helps” (taps on bum). lol
ellen – yep, go ahead!
I dropped my Liz Earle superskin concentrate on my tiled bathroom floor the other day. Glass and oil everywhere. No more superskin. SOB!
that collection 2000 benetint is fab i bought it on a whim and it really is nice!!cheap nailvarnishes- with a decent topcoat they are just as good as the expensive kind i think.
In the past few months, maybe a year or so (partly thanks to this site), I have bought tons of beauty stuff, at least defo more than I did before. It’s a combination of things, I guess, but I decided that I absolutely refuse to worry about money: we are a two-income couple (well, when I have work
), no kids, no mortgage, no debt, no frequent nights out in pub. The recession actually doesn’t change these factors for me, fortunately. Having said all that, I try to buy the best quality that is suitable for my skin, regardless whether it’s cheap, mid-range or high-end. I like natural/organic stuff, which is not cheap, but goes a long way. From make-up, it’s harder to find good quality organic ones, so I stick with ‘normal’ ones, but I do get enraged occasionally when the much hyped Lancome Defincils (sp?) mascara clumps all the time, so I try to make sure to try it first AND read the reviews at the same time.
Also, curbed dangerous habit of buying stuff for the ‘free’ gift, it’s never free and I end up buying stuff I don’t need.
Cailin, I’m with you on the nail varnishes, completely true!! Especially after having a *very* expensive mani and essie french polish that started to peel the next day and I defo didn’t go home and cleaned the house and have a dishwasher, still there I was with 40 yoyos worth mani turning into below average overnight.
That was meant to be a
Collection 2000 is new to me, where could I purchase?
Ok Admin! I got a flyer in the door from Carter Beauty. They are doing a special its 2 hours and you get Refresher Facial, Aromatherapy Back Massage and the MediPedi (that we’ve been talking about on here) and wait for it….. the whole thing is 99yoyos!
Pretty good don’t ya think? I haven’t been to the salon myself but I know it’s meant to be lovely and have sent lots of people there and have all had great feedback.
ah we love marissa – in fact I really must write about a great facial she did for me recently!
Its good isn’t it. And they have another one thats eyelash shape tint, eyelash extension, File paint fingers toes, spray tan and makeup application. That offer is 100. Thats everything on the flyer.
Went to my local hairdresser on Saturday instead of my usual one in town and saved 25 quid! BUT my fringe was crooked and she didn’t go near my layers so I think that’s a bit of a false economy right there..
I love pennypinching anyway, so this recession lark means nothing to me. Unless I default on my mortgage payments and end up on the street. That would mean something…
actually I’m always been on the lookout for cheap n’ cheerful beauty products over the years and I hope the economic downturn doesn’t mean it’ll be harder to get the things I usually buy! HANDS OFF!!
I’ve stockpiled so many cosmetics, shower gels etc from Sephora over the last few hols that I don’t need to buy anything in that area for a few years!!! Started using Johnson’s body lotion again, it’s brilliant, and I think it’s only €5 or €6. Unfortunately, I have lovely, but completely unnatural blonde hair, so I can’t cut back on my hairdresser, shampoo, conditioner bills. Damnit. Is there any cheaper version of Benefit’s Erase Paste that someone could recommend? Tried it last week and loved it.
I am addicted to stockpiling things. Not just cosmetics/toiletries but food as well. Was in Newry last week and came back with about 20 different types of pureed/creamed/diced tomatoes, not to mention a kilo of brown pasta to add to the kilo I already have. Tragic!!
[...] Ms. O’Rourke might have for us over the next few weeks. She might join the women on beaut.ie discussing cutting open the tubes of cream to squeeze out the last drop and the bits that they cannot do [...]
I will go with out food during this recession rather than scrimp on my beauty needs a girl must always look her best !!!!!!
