Brown lippie smackdown: Smashbox vs. MAC vs. Clarins Rouge Prodige

brown lips

While any dream red will do for dramatic lips this season, there's another colour story happening for AW10 too that might hold more appeal for neutral lovers out there. You can thank (or, er, not) fashion and beauty's big nod to the nineties for the resurgance of the brown lip, which we first told you about early on in the summer.

Digging through my stash, I unearthed no fewer than three brown lippies, none of which have ever made it past the front door. Not even as far as the local Centra. Until now, they've all looked highly unfashionable, so I've been mostly using them to tone down super bright hot pinks when I fancied something a bit more muted.

I (very bravely, you'll agree) decided to take one more crack at these browns in hopes that they'd look awesome now.

Smashbox Socialite is the lightest of the three, an almost nude pinkish taupe that delivers only a subtle amount of colour to the lips, MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Hug Me is a marginally darker praline shade, and Clarins Rouge Prodige in Redwood is the darkest and most intense pink brown of the trio. It's also by far the most comfortable to wear and longest lasting, going for hours and hours (between meals) with no need for touch ups.

Now, since all three have rosier undertones than Revlon Mink and give a lustrous finish with no shimmer, I thought they'd be nicely wearable. However, even though they're all actually pretty natural on - totally fine for a trip down the corner shop - I still felt like a Friends extra the whole time I was wearing any of the shades!
