Yup, it’s true. I am no longer in the thrall of YSL Touche Eclat. I’m notoriously fickle when it comes to products as regular readers will know anyway, but this time I have given my heart and soul to Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch - ‘an exclusive radiant touch highlighter’, apparently.
Baby in a Corner asked the other day was it true you should have two concealing products and yep, a lot of makeup artists will recommend same. I tend to use a highlighter for my eyes, and something a little heavier duty (like Babara Daly’s fab and cheap concealer for Tesco) for blemishes and zits. And I’m loving Instant Light for my eyes a lot.
Cheaper than YSL and actually a far nicer product, the wonderous Strawberrynet have it on sale now in its fancy new packaging too (mine is the old skool white and red packaging) and it’s a snip at €21 - apparently a 4% saving but given our over-inflated prices, it’s a bit more than that.

Interesting!
I’ve been a Touche Eclat users for ages now but this could be worth a try out…
On a Boylan & Balfe make up course earlier this year, they rubbished touche eclat! They said it was the greatest swizz in makeup, that no one product like this could suit everyone and that it was the biggest con! They said the same thing about Benetint too. That these products get cult status but really aren’t all that!
thats the pink stuff by benefit that goes on your cheeks and lips? interesting! but doesn’t touche eclat come in a few colours? people seem to get good results from these products tho!!
I also did a B&B make up course and they said that Touche Eclat was a con! I still use it though. Benefit’s Realness of Concealness is the business tho, very handy for the handbag!
I have this Clarins pen and I have to say it is great. Definitely on a par with if not better than touche eclat. Must actually top up soon… strawberrynet bargain you say?
Hated touche eclat whne I used it. I use the barbara daly under the eyes - dab it on with a foundation brush.
yeah but gals, you have to remember these products aren’t created for makeup artists, to whom the concept of applying concealer with a built in brush is alien, they’re created for US. the majority of women don’t have an extensive toolkit and don’t apply their concealer with a dedicated brush. makeup artists do, so they reckon touch eclat is a nuts thing to use. but for the average woman on the street, it’s madly handy.
well said aphrodite! as i said i was reading laura mercier’s flawless face book and the amount of time you’d want to recreate the ‘flawless face’- putting on primer before eyeshadow, rolling power over your face instead of with a brush, patting translucent powder over under eye concealor- fine for going out at night maybe but no person would be able to fit that in every morning!!
YSL touche eclat isn’t for me but the way I see it is all these people can’t be wrong.
Its only in the last few year or two that I started using brushes - it was fingers or the little sponge thing/brushes that came with the product.
I always used to use Touche Eclat - then tried Guerlain’s one which comes in 3 shades. Apparently it is a lot better for Irish skin tones which tend to ahve a pink tone, rather than a yellow tone that Touche Eclat is made for - can’t remember the exact name for it sorry - but the only thing is its about €36 as opposed to YSL at €26. For concealer on other areas of my face I use Boing by Benefit - but I keep hearing everyone talking about the Barabara Daly for Tesco one - does anyone know where I can get this? I tried Tesco Clare Hall and Tesco Jervis St and neither stocked it.
ElaineH. Most of the big tesco’s have a makeup stand called ‘MAKE-UP. These products are for Tesco by Barbara Daly - I really like it and its only about €5.
B&B were giving a make up course for real women though, teaching make up tips that everyone could use and apply for every day wear. They weren’t talking about what make-up artists used. They did say that the touche eclat was a con and that we’d all been duped into buying into a cult status product that really didn’t do what it said on the tin!
i have one of these in EA but dont no what to do with it is it for under eyes so?
On the subject on Benetint’s cult status, this Ten Reasons Not To Buy Benetint is worth a read… http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/54643/ten_reasons_why_you_should_not_buy.html I have encountered almost every problem listed, but still use Benetint because I haven’t found anything similar (besides a Vincent Longo lip & cheek stain which I bought in the US that isn’t available here, doh!) Anyone got any suggestions?
ElaineH - what shade do you use in the Guerlain?
for under your eyes Mary, they usually have light reflective qualities or so they say…
laurie, yep, I’ve done the same course. They’re still approaching it from the POV of being makeup artists though, who apply concealer with brushes (which is what I do myself when time permits) and not using a pen with built in brush. of course it’s a gimmick and a pretty expensive one at that considering what you get for the money, but it’s a dead handy gimmick- and great for the eyes! Saves me so much time in the morning - quick flick at the corners of each eye, pat it in and I’m done.
I tried Touche Eclat before and wasn’t that impressed either…I was at the laura mercier counter a few weeks ago and the girl there told me that a lot of people had said that to her. and i wasn’t buying concealer then, just foundation. of course, this could be her marketing ploy…
I have to say that the day I first tried Touche Eclat was a real “angels singing on high” moment. It made me look about five years old! Since I was dragged into my thirties and I suddenly got dark circles out of nowhere, it’s become even more essential. The secret is not to limit it to under the eyes, but also around the mouth (esp. nose creases) and over the tops of cheekbones etc. I also put it directly under the eyebrow. But I have to say I’m tempted by the Clarins just because it’s cheaper. Can’t remember how much the YSL is in BT’s but it’s bloody pricey, that’s for sure.
