“Laydeeeeee in Reeddddddddddd”, gurgled ma and da pleaser Chrisde Burke back in the mists of time, thus fixing in every Irish girl’s mind that red, it is a bit of a sexy auld shade. A Patricia the Stripper shade, even.
So while I’ve had this bottle of Nubar Cabaret Red (a part of the recent Risque Reds collection) lurking for a while, I haven’t used it. Red’s more a winter shade in my mind, and I’m firmly in that pastel/coral polish groove seeings it’s the ‘summer’.
I put it on the other day though to take a snap of that Beyonce Heat fragrance ring (I don’t normally condone matchy matchy but hey, inspiration was lacking) and was immediately taken with it. Firstly, the formulation of this polish is just gorgeous – in Goldilocks and the three bears parlance, it’s neither too thick or too thin. It’s just right: brushing on easily, there’s no clagging or clogging, no brush strokes and it dries really quickly, allowing you to layer on coats quickly. One will do with this, but two is better.
Then there’s the shade itself – it’s a shimmering red that’s just luscious-looking, delivering a metallic, high shine. LOVE IT.
Nubar polishes have been a bit in-and-out in Ireland: first the brand was salon-only, then it went into selected pharmacies and now it’s coming back out of pharmacy, and into salons again. Phew. So I’ve no dedicated stockist info at the moment, but you can of course buy online. Here, they cost around €9.50 a bottle.

Oooh it’s beautiful…just the right shade…not dark & berry-ish, proper red but without being garish/tacky…methinks I’ll be buying online & putting away for Autumn.
LMAO @ the Chris De Burgh stuff, memories of my mam playing his album on tape on our cassette player / record player combo (with fake wood trim!). She would rewind Lady in Red over & over. I remember thinkin Patricia the Stripper was such a naughty song haha!
lovely red, i feel like such a glamour puss when i wear red!
That is a FABULOUS shade, a real true red…is it weird that I’m pining for A/W 2010 now?
fifibelle – I know what you mean, I love all the reds and dark colours for A/W.
I love it Kirstie. Will definitely be purchasing, along with about another ten colours I saw on the website!
Lava Girl, thank God I’m not on my own!!
This is lovely, I wish I could paint my nails as neatly as you. I can never get it to be that even at the base of my nail.
Oooh, I like that shade, and I’m not a nail polish wearer, having spent years of my youth biting them down to the quick
I did however, when the weather first got nice, go out and buy some polish for my toesies, and I got Maybelline Deep Red, which I really like also. Very hard-wearing.
Ooh, keep us informed of stockists Kirstie, I may splash out on this….
Nothing like a red nail varnish for the old galmour factor.
Love it!!!!
Ooh that’s a lovely shade. Also want Petunia (Purple with sparkles) on the website.
Lovely shade! I like Nubar although buy ing online and gazing at gorgeous photos meant I have made some mistakes in their colours but have managed to swap away the ones I didn’t want to keep.
I buy Nubar from the UK (beautyshed.co.uk) and US (Sparkling*Nails on ebay)
Aaah Nubar…..one of those brands that you hear glorious things about but never see in shops and are too lazy to get around to buying online…..I may have to finally get with the program though.
Scrangie is always going on about Nubar. She always has swatches of the latest releases. It’s pure nail polish porn! http://www.scrangie.com/search/label/Nubar
Miffy, I’ve heard about Sparkling*Nails as well and have it saved on my Ebay sellers but have never actually bought from them. What’s shipping like?
seriously lovely formulation, ladies. Gorgeously smooth on this one and applies like a D:Ream
Nubar is the best brand for nail polish, I swear! Their colours are gorgeous and the formula never fails – so easy to put on, dries fast and lasts for days. And, most importantly even I can put it neatly without mess and streaks, and this doesnt happen with other brands
I put “Carribean Coral” (which is gorgeous pink acctually) on 3 days ago and its still perfect on my fingernails!
Sorry for the long post, i am just so impressed by this polish:)
SJP’s MM:
I have bought from S*N on several occasions. Shipping is not the cheapest, but most ebay sellers seem to be inflexible when it comes to bulk buying. Anyway I have always got good CS there (ie they will hold a fast-selling polish for me till they have all the ones I want in stock, or you can pre-order by email if there is a new collection coming out etc.)
Finally they stock lots of brands that otherwise you’d have to order separately (Nubar, Zoya as well as the usuals)
