On Friday evening, in preparation for the book signing the next day, Kirstie and I went to have our nails done. Cos you can’t be signing with tattered old nail varnish half chewed off nails, can you?
Kirstie had the worst manicure ever seen, but I’ll let her tell you all about that. Mine was fine, but despite letting my nails dry for hours, the second I went to get dressed for going out that night, disaster struck.
“Ah fecks sake look at that.” We’re not talking chipping here – we’re talking big ridges and the colour smudged off nails.
“I can’t do the book signing with these nails,” I wailed.
Kirstie had the answer and nipping to the chemist came back with a Bourjois shade the exact same as the fancy pants OPI colour I had on. (Read about all of the new season Bourjois here)
Blue Mysterieux is dark blue (almost black) and shiny out, I wish I’d done my own bloody nails. Especially as the manicurist had the worst technique for filing I’ve ever seen. It was quite violent, I won’t lie to you. She filed the nails downwards in over forceful strokes as I watched her in open mouthed amazement.
“Do you get many people coming in for manicures?” I ventured. “Not really no” she replied.
I’m not surprised.

Did ye get it done at Jurys or somewhere in town?
(Dying to know!)
Dying to know too Aphrodite??
Remarked to myself how nice the colour of your nails was on Saturday actually
I have this nail varnish in a lovely purple colour. Tis great stuff.
Name and shame the butcher
Love love love this colour will be going to my nearest Bourjois stockist “Toute Suit”* to pick up this varnish
* Bourjois is French / channelling my inner Cath and Kim
Jurys. AWFUL. Just AWFUL. Now, I don’t expect a Mink-style finish from a day spa that doesn’t specialise in nails but if they DO offer nails then I would expect it to be better. My nails were also filed crookedly and appallingly badly, the polish was jagged and uneven and filled with bits of fluff and nail dust. Shocking, so bad. The girl was lovely and everything but needs to go back to mani-school pronto.
Kirstie – That’s so disappointing.
Note to self – don’t get a manicure there.
Ah Jesus, that sounds like a disaster :/ Did you get your money back at least?!
Love Bourjois! Not sure if I would go for dark blue, maybe I should…I have dark red from the same brand.
V. similar to Chanel Blue Satin (one of my favourites).
Nope, it was all lovely and dim in the spa so it looked ok, didn’t see the full horror till I got back to the room and TBH couldn;t have sat through a re-do with someone who would be potentially annoyed about it. I tend to take the ‘lesson learned, won’t go back’ approach in these situations.
I actually thought it was the chanel when I saw it on aphrodite saturday and I thought to myself I should invest will definatley be purchasing now that I know its bourjois….
I sometimes think that some hotel salons resign themselves to one-off visits from guests rather than repeat local business where they have to earn a good repuation. Obviously not destination spa hotels where this is the core business. I had worst mani ever in local hotel salon – same thing, girl doing my nails in the dark and only saw how bad it was when I went out in to daylight.
Love that blue though.
Ooh, lovely colour – actually now that I think about it, I might actually have this at home already!
Pity about the crappy manicure though
I had a facial done there and wasn’t impressed at all. I did have the same facial done a few times before so knew what to expect.
Just ducked out to Boots on my lunch to purchase!Cant wait to get home and try it
I had such a foul mani in Santry last year – jagged nails, crooked white tips – that when my VERY distracted “manicurist” came back, I said I’d changed my mind and could I have a plain colour please.
Tell me, is it common here to not be invited to wash your hands post-filing, to get rid of all the dust & filings? I’ve never had the opportunity here, but it was standard practice everywhere else I’ve been.
Definite mental note not to go there – horrendous for such a reputable hotel.
That’s a lovely shade! I might buy it, even though I don’t wear nail varnish that much
Nothing worse than a bad manicure
I bought that shade but it just didn’t work on me, I ended up giving it away to the nieces. Too…something…can’t find the right word. And I love dark blues, most dark colours in general.
That’s so frustrating – manicures are a lovely treat but less so if you have to re-do it yourself! That’s a lovely colour though, I friggin love Bourjois nailvarnish too. I’m wearing the A/W grey at the moment.
Bought it last night on your recommendation! Love it!
ha thats gas … was at a hen in west cork before and went to the local salon for some treatments .. they charge less than dublin but thats about all i can say!! perhaps its lack of competition from the mink/brazilia type speciality places ? i dunno .. but i won’t be wasting my hard earned moola again ….
I have this Bourjois colour and that lovely Blurple colour too (which is an absoulte dupe for that famous nail inc shade – thing it’s Belgrave Sq???) I suppose it’s an each to their own thing, but I just couldn’t be bothered paying for a manicure I could probably do better myself!
Bought this today, my local chemist no longer does the Bourjois so had to do a bit of searching.
but it’s almost identical to the “No7 Betty Blues” i bought during the summer – hate when this happens !
