Wooo- ooooo. It’s nearly Halloween. Bangers have been going off for weeks in anticipation
Gone are the days when we all dressed up in black sacks and were more than happy to receive a handful of monkey nuts in our Halloween bags. Oh what innocent days. (Though I have to say I’m still innocent. When I Googled ‘black sack’ to see if I could get a nice image for this post I got more than I bargained for. Things that were truly scary I’m telling you. Note to self: turn the Safe Search back on).
Anyway, where were we? Oh yeah – ‘going round the houses’. We could hardly wait for dusk to gather before we would excitedly scurry out covered in tinfoil, black sacks, cardboard boxes and the other pieces of household rubbish that made up costumes back when we were chislers. You didn’t spend money on Halloween then. And where we lived there were a total of two kinds of plastic masks that could be purchased in the local shops – and everyone had them. The same ones that made your face hot and sweaty. So you were either a witch or a sort of green monster. And that was it.
Now it’s all proper costumes, parents escorting the children and treat size bars being handed out at the doors.
Ah I feel like Old Mr Brennan reminiscing about times past. What about you – what did you get up to? Are you off to any Halloween parties this weekend? And if you are tell us what you’ll be going as!

Aphrodite you just made me spit my tea out with your black sack searching lol!
I was only thinking yesterday of the crap costumes we had- what was the black bin bag with orange peel stuck to it (on purpose!) meant to be?!
im still all for making costumes when you can rather than renting/buying though!!!
it’s the same when you google for pictures of ‘facial’ – am I really that innocent?!
Yes must be the answer
I never got to go trick-or-treating… the joys of living in the bogarse of nowhere!
I just found a photo from my first Hallowe’en, I wore a big floppy red hat, a Kimono my dad had from the 70s and a paper plate with a face cut out of it. Haven’t a bog what I was meant to be, but I look like I was having a blast though!
Going to Warlords of Pez tonight, dressing as a witch (How original!) but I have all the bits and bobs for it already.
Heading to the Leinster match and to a friend’s house party tomorrow, dressing as a firewoman. It’s a little saucy, but sure isn’t that what they’re all at now!
(Was tempted to make a costume out of black bags, but that required effort!)
Zie – that costume sounds right on the money – no clue what you were supposed to be be but it was all hilarious
What’s that film where everyone is dressed in sexy halloween cotumes – is it Mean Girls?
Yeah! Mean Girls, where Lindsay arrives as the “Ex-Wife”.
I had a party a few years ago where EVERYONE had to come in a costume crafted entirely from bin bags. It was most excellent, especially when one of my mates turned up in a ku klux klan outfit created from white bin liners. Oh how we laughed.
Heehee
hilarious Aphrodite.
Ah hallow’een was great when I was a kid in London – we always used to have parties at either school friends or cousins houses. I have some funny pics of me aged 9 dressed up as a Rude Girl (think two-tone mod style outfit and The Specials) and 6 year old brother was Sid Vicious. Favorite outfit by far was black cat…ah the good old days when you could walk around the street in a black leotard and footless tights with cats ears.
The only Halloween I can remember is the year I went as a Pink Care Bear
Oh god i loved halloween as a kid. The great thing about living in the countryside was that we got money too!! I was a gypsy, a pirate, a witch and all sorts of monsters with backcombed hair. From the 1st of Sept we were planning our costumes!!!
My mam used to have loads of games in the house too like bobbing for apples. It was the best!!
I remember a Halloween long long ago where my mam dressed me up in fishnet tights, a belly top & a teeny skirt. SHe put what i can only describe as ‘whore’ makeup on me & put my hair up in a side pony …………. so eh I pretty much looked like the ‘yun ones’ these days
ha ha ha
I can’t remember what I was supposed to be – though I hope to god it wasn’t a ‘lady of the night’
we used to have 3-4 costumes at home, a cat, a witch, a devil and something else and they used to go in rotation every year and cos we lived on an estate, we could go around ourselves. it wasn’t until secondary school that I got to dress as something else. 2nd year goth, 3rd year devil, 4th year witch, 5th year flamenco dancer, 6th year geisha, didn’t dress up for 1st year college, Dolly Parton 2nd year, pin up sailor girl last year and Where’s Wally this year.
I’ll prob bring my younger brothers and sister out trick or treating tomorrow, as we now live in the country and through them a small party afterwards, like we used to have back in teh day. Bobbing for money, snap apple and Hocus Pocus on dvd, doesn’t get any better!!
Roller skates, an apron and a tray and ya had wheels on meals. People put no imagination anymore, though maybe this year will be differnet with the oul recession putting the breaks on expensive costumes. I’m dressing up as the Queen of Hearts. Picked up a big puffy eighties wedding dress in Camden market which I’ve sewed lots of red hearts onto. Picked up a crown and will try get some other bits tomorrow
haha Cristabelle…that’s so funny. Maybe you were ‘the future’
That was meals on wheels I mean, unless you fell over!
Pink, I’m the queen of hearts too..but the “show alot of skin version”…http://www.joke.co.uk/fancy_dress/adult_queen_of_hearts_costume~23815.html
Who remembers the Wombles masks on the back of cornflakes boxes ? Just add a black bin bag !!
The childer these days who come around are really annoying – obnoxious brats with pseudo American accents who probably think Miley Cyrus invented Halloween. No manners either. But this is definitely the best time of year. Maeve Higgins had a great bit in the TV show about fancy dress parties and how they should be renamed Sexy Dress parties. As she went as a medley of winter vegetables.
Aphrodite you just made me laugh! Reminded me of a frightening experience when I was doing up my bathroom and Googled “Shower heads”.
I was only thinking of childhood Halloween’s this morning, my mother was a dab hand with a needle and thread and sellotape. I’ve realised that my poor future children will not benefit from home made costumes, it’s just a skill I don’t possess…
My mother once sent me and my 2 sisters to a fancy dress party as ‘Jesus, Mary & Joseph’.
Basically an excuse to dress us all in pillowcases and tea towels.
I’m not dressing up this year, I wussed out of the work fancy dress last night – was Sarah Palin last year so couldn’t measure up this year!
I remember getting dressed up in my dads black coat and my mum using a belt to hike it up to stop me from tripping; this was teamed up with a witch’s mask from the local shop and a homemade hat- which was basically a piece of card turned into a cone and stapled in place- a very sophisticated look! We used to get loads of bruised apples and hard nuts (still in their shells). We didn’t have anything as worldly as a nut cracker so we used to bash them open with a hammer and then eat mouthfuls of nut pulp mixed in with splintered shell – mmmmm.
yeah it was black sacks all the way for me too! we used to have to walk about 5 miles to trick-or-treat at the 5 or so houses around us. We walked the roads on our own, its such a cheat when the parents drive the kids around!
I’ve got an Auburn wig and a yellow jumpsuit and I’m going as April O’Neil, channel 6 news reporter from Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles! I still need to get a pumpkin in, though.
I am dressed as a relic of 80s disco at work today (it was a team theme) but will be going with hubby as Morticia & Gomez Addams to a party tomorrow!
My Mum used to sew me lots of outfits. I had a brilliant princess costume which I wore with crimped hair! Ahaha! Yesterday I dressed up as a witch. Imaginative!
Was only just discussing the whole black bin bags as costumes with my friend last night! Thats all we had, and those sweaty plastic Pound-Shop masks that were as sharp as feckin razors if u cracked them. Ah the memories… One thing that I’m not into now is the amount of ballerinas and princesses and cartoon characters that kids dress up as when going trick or treating, its way too American, Halloween is meant to be scary!
Those masks were a nightmare! No weekend plans as i’m really under the weather with a horrible headcold
. Poor me!!!
Anywhoodle – hilarious, that has just brought back a haze of sweaty-faced childhood memories. Yucky nostril holes in those cheapo masks!!
Jenizzle, I didn’t get to go trick or treating either! I was a deprived child. I did dress up a few times though, the usual jazz of witches with those rubber fingers you’d put on over your own to give you long scary witches nails. Anyone else remeber those?!
Can’t be arsed dressing up this year but if i was i’d probably try to go as Sookie Stackhouse maybe? Can’t think of anything original. Probably going to stay indoors and watch Absolutely Fabulous this weekend
Those masks, I can remember the smell of them like it was yesterday. Yuck.
