It’s a knee-jerk reaction to think of France when cosmetics are discussed: beautiful botanicals from Darphin and Sisley, gorgeous makeup from Chantecaille and By Terry and skincare from players such as Aveene and Clarins, not to mention cellulite-busters from Lierac, fine fragrance from Creed and billions more brands besides.
The Estee Lauder company collects together some of America’s best-known brands like Clinique, Bobbi Brown and Origins and Canada’s brought us MAC, Ojon and Cover FX. The UK’s not short on choice either: Rimmel, Jo Malone, Elemis and Illamasqua are all British-bred.
Australia’s brought us Becca and Lipstick Queen, Germany has a good rep for organics and has given us natural Lavera and Weleda as well as Art Deco makeup. Even wee Ireland has lots to offer: Voya, Nadur and Fuschia are three of our home-grown beauty buys.
I think I’m a bit multi-cultural (or confused?) cos I’d take France for skincare, the US for colour and oh, probably France again for fragrance. But what’s your favourite country for beauty?

oh toughie - Japan or France for me I think for skincare, haircare etc
US for cosmetics
Oh forgot all about Japan. Typical.
US for skincare, UK for fragrance (Jo Malone and Ormonde Jayne, although I might cheat on them with Serge) and cosmetics is just too hard! US, if that’s what NARS counts as too, although I would often be thinking of Japan and the UK.
I’m rubbish at these; I can never choose one.
Skincare: Japan (Shu Uemura - I can finally get my hands on the Red:Juvenus range thanks to strawberrynet); UK (Eve Lom and Liz Earle).
Fragrance: UK (Jo Malone); and France (Miss Dior).
Make-up: Switzerland (La Prairie); France (Chantecaille); and US (Bobbi Brown).
I can’t pick just one
France for Decleor, Chanel and L’occitane
US for Philosophy, Bare Escentuals and Clinique
UK for Nails Inc, Elemis and Liz Earle
That’s a difficult one, but if I really have to pick I would choose both
France and the U.S. for make-up, skincare and fragrances. Both countries just have a huge amount of choice and variety.
love how cheap France is for aveene, la roche posay and phyto! oh and nuxe as well are all in every pharmacy.
I was like a kid in a candy store in Japan. Got my shu uemura eyelash curlers for €6! the level of service over there is amazing! everyone just attends you even if you’re just buying something small. also love anna sui and shiseido!
Oooh hard question!
I’d have to go with my homeland for skincare - Australia: Aesop; Jurlique; Ultraceuticals; Invisible Zinc
France for fragrances
And a mixture of France and USA for makeup - NARS; By Terry; Chantecaille; Kevyn Aucoin
There is no competition: VIVA LA FRANCE!
I think it has to be a combination of Japan (Shu Uemura), France (Matis), UK (Liz Earle) and US (Mac, Urban Decay, Estee Lauder). I am even more rubbish than usual at narrowing things down this evening - just greedy I guess!
America for makeup, France for fragrance and possibly skincare too…
The one that puts on the least makeup, fragrance, and other weird and harmful expensive additions?
I’m very much ‘equal opportunities’ as far as make up and skincare. I’ll use whatever works for me.
But for sheer choice, value for money and MASSIVE deals to be found it has to be the US.
Everytime I go there I am constantly amazed how right royally we are overtaxed on skincare and cosmetics in the EU.
