Nigella is only lady for me when it comes to cooking!
Geegee, you’re talking about me 8-9 years ago. I dropped alot of weight, slutted about and thought these guys wanted me for who I was not a quickie! The two are very much connected. The photos being put up online are looking for approval from people, girls to tell her she looks great, guys to tell her she’s sexy. I was the youngest, I got alot of attention from my mother but she was very strict with me so I rebelled against it. Also my nephew was born and alot of attention diverted to him.
Try and sort out the problems now rather than a few months down the line. Maybe take her out for lunch (you can see her eating habits. I used to make excuses not to eat with people – and I definately don’t think I had anorexia – but it is a thin line between anorexia and trying to look good when it comes to teenage girls). Over lunch / dinner/ a bag of taytos you can have your talk with her. She is going to fight against whatever you say to her, but don’t let it lie.
Blue Eyes – no worries, will stick it up later on this evening. Definitely worth a try!
Monty – did you get your make-up done in BB last week? I wasn’t around on Friday so not sure if you did or not. I love all the new stuff they have.
thanks jenni
jeez i was such a sheltered teenager…always feel like i was way too goody 2 shoes bk then…
BLUE, I’d rather have been too good believe me!!! Galway is way too small…
Glamazon – I did and it was brilliant! If I had the money I would’ve bought everything she put on my face
In the end, I bought a blush in pale pink, one of the new lip glosses in dusty rose and graphite shimmer gel eye liner.
I also asked after the price of the blush brush (which I’m considering) and it’s €49.
LMW – hehee
I’m sure you weren’t half as bad as you think you were and you can blame it on being young and naive! Same can’t be said for women in the 30s still acting, err, out of control and going out in too small tops/too short skirts!
Thanks Tina! I was a terror though, but at least I can look back on it now and see what a gigantic twat I was…and I’d stopped being such a twat when I hit 19, I know of a girl who’s still playing the same game – she’s run out of people in Galway to “go off with” and she has a really bad name, stopped hanging around with her because I didn’t want people saying “LMW is back!!!” but at least now I have an idea what to look out for!
But back to happy talk, I need a good cookbook! I have the unislim one which I’m currently working my way through…and I have various potatoe, cookies, italian dishes, veg, cakes etc cookbooks that I’d say I’ve glanced at once or twice!
Glamazon – I saw the Tana Ramsay book you always mention in the bookshop the other day and it looks really good! I now also want Jamie’s Ministry of Food, two Rachel Allen books, the Good Mood Food book (which is due out soon) and maybe an Avoca book. I’m nearly as bad as you!
Jenni – If you wouldn’t mind, please: I’d love to try that soup. It’s been ages since I made soup. Sure sign of the winter
BLUE_Eyes – I think I was a goody-goody too, in many ways. My parents always impressed upon me that there was plenty of time for fun later, when I’d made sure I had a place in college.
Monty – god I am sorry, I think I read that the other day and it has only just come back to me! Sorry for asking you again.
The new glosses are fantastic aren’t they? I got the Pink Raspberry one – I love the new applicator, much better than the brush but the SA told me BB will never change the brush on the other glosses because BB herself loves it so much (someone else on here said they were told that as well) which is a bit strange.
And you were so right about the liner – so easy to use. I got the Graphite as well. Going to get voilet when sister is in NY.
Slowly but surely BB is taking over my make-up bag! The brushes are fab.
LMW – At least you’ve learnt from your mistakes, and we’ve all made a few
yup I now slut about with makeup, shoes and clothes!
lmw – yeah, but you were young… howabout one of the Food Doctor’s books since you’re dieting? I like his recipes.
Hermione – its Tamasin Day Lewis’ Kitchen Bible that I am always on about
Most used cookbook I own (and I have a lot!). I am going to look out for one of her guest cookery classes at the Tannery or somewhere and hopefully me and sis (another of her fans) will go.
haha i spose ur right lmw!
Glamazon, I absolutely love Rachel Allen’s books as well – I was eyeing up her new one today at lunch – half price – today is payday so I may treat myself! Although, its become more of a habit rather than a treat as I buy a cookbook every other week it seems! I think ‘Bake’ is my favourite cookbook at the moment – and I wonder why I’m not losing weight ha!!!
Jenni – I have never bought a Neven Maguire cookbook – is he any good?
BBG – Bill Granger is great – I think most of his recipes are healthier than most cookbooks which is good (but sometimes you just need a feed of butter and cream a la nigella!)
Glamazon –
‘Twas an unusual name beginning with T, and I got confused ;oops: ‘Tis just another for the list, I guess
Colette – Where did you see Rachel Allan’s book half price?
I have the cornacopia cookbook – still have lots of recipes to try from it and whats been tried and tested went down well with non – veggies too!
Avoca cafe cookbooks are amazing I think it’s the 2nd one that has the delish caramel squares recipe!
Hermione – Waterstones in Cork but I assume all Waterstones stores will stock it.
Glamazon – Is it me or is Tamasin Day Lewis quite irritating to watch on TV?!! I must have a look at her book this evening though and see what its like!
Cooking chilli from Jamie Olivers new book tonight!
I love her approach but her hair drives me crackers. Would love to tie it back/ get at it with a skipload of serum
Hermione
easily done! I haven’t read Tana’s but I don’t think you will be disappointed with Tamasin – she writes so well and gives great recipes for everyday homestyle food rather than cheffy food.
I always check out Rachel’s recipes in the Sunday Tribune – although the last couple of weeks she hasn’t been there
I tried her recipe for Moussaka that was printed a couple of weeks ago and it was very tasty. And her roasted tomato and basil soup is delish.
Colette – I really like his books as the recipes are very simple and the ingredients can be bought in your regular Superquinn/Tesco/SuperValu, so you don’t have to go all around the town to buy your ingredients! One of my favourite dishes from his book ‘Neven’s Real Food For Families’ is a chorizo and spinach pasta dish, it’s the perfect dish for a cold winter night, and a ‘one-pot’ dish too, so great if you’re having a few around for dinner. My Mum did a lovely fresh pineapple and lime sorbet from that book at the weekend too…lovely and zesty!!
Hermione – I have the 2 Avoca Café cookbooks, they’re great – although I don’t use them often enough. I have the Ministry of Food too, his home-made burger recipe is really good. My mother has bought me all the Jamie books in an attempt to make me into as good a cook as she is I think…t’will never happen
Colette
heehee! funny you should say that…when I first saw her I phoned my sister and said ‘have a look at this one on UK Food’ or whatever channel…and sister and I used to take the mickey out of her all the time…we thought she was hilarious – especially when she is with her sidekick George, that little woman friend who knows everything. And her then husband as well! They are real 70s throwbacks. And she is so flirty with any blokes on the show. But then after a while I started to really love her cooking and then I bought her book and since then I am a huge fan. She goes on a bit about organics but if you get beyond that her recipes are very good.
Colette – Thanks for that. I must check it out!
Glamazon – That sounds like my type of cookbook, as do Nevin’s, judging by Jenni’s description. I like no-fuss recipes. I’m not a good enough cook for the cheffy type recipes, and I haven’t the patience for them, either. Straightforward food, with store cupboard ingredients and minimal washing up is what I like
BBG – I dont think you’re being preachy, her mum knows and has talked to her about and she’s still not copping on and I think my sis doesnt think anything about the weight thing, even though she is far far too skinny at the moment. i may kick up a fuss about her eating with my sis…
LMW- Thanks for your advice, I’m planning on watching her eating very closely this weekend and seeing what she’s like, we’ll be having a birthday party for another niece on Saturda and then another nieces christening the following day so it’ll be easily done… Gonna try and have the chat with her on Saturday, i know she wont want to listen to me but it needs to be done.
Oh and on recipe books, I bought Rachel Allens new one yesterday, gorgeous recipes in there
rowing in late but neven maguire’s cookbooks are the best! everything is easy to make but turns out really well! good for both people that are learning to cook and those that are almost professional. I never got Jamie Oliver’s book cause i thought the recipes were quite difficult to make and a little ‘out there’ as well.
Gee Gee – didn’t see the part about the eating issues before. Please be gentle with her if that’s the case. Giving out to her about not eating etc will only make it worse. Trust me, I’ve been there. Try to make her feel comfortable enough to talk to you and feel that she can trust you and know that you won’t judge her. Something’s obviously bothering her. You’re a very good auntie! She’s lucky to have you!
Neven’s books seem very popular…must have a look. He is doing a one-day course at the Tannery in November as well, although that’s a bit too close to C-day for me.
I’ve had friends in the past with eating disorders and even was leaning towards having one myself when I was young, pre-teens, and one of my sisters admits that she was near anorexic when she was a teenager thanks to constant comments from my brother about her bum (mine was from comments from my brother and my sisters about my stomach, I was only 8/9 at the time, my mum said i just wouldnt eat and i remember i used to sneak out of the house at night to exercise outside, after having spent ages of time exercising during the day), so its definitely in the family… I know from my own experiences that I cant give out to her about her eating or any of the other stuff or she’ll clam up so I’m just gonna try and gently chat to her about it…
Have one or two of Nevens cookbooks and they are also very good
Glamazon – have you ever been to his restaurant, MacNean House in Blacklion? You’d love it!!!
Gee Gee, how much is Rachels new book? Love her food, not so gone on her. I read cookery books in bed.
Jenknee – I’m not a fan of Rachel herself, either: her voice annoys the hell out of me! I do like her recipes, though.
My housemate mocked me the other night because I sat down with my cup of green tea and some recipe books to leaf through.
Jenni – no I haven’t – I passed by it again recently on the way from Sligo to Enniskillen. There are rooms there as well aren’t there? Might look at booking a little treat in the New Year as a pick me up. I hear it can be hard to get a reservation at short notice.
Thanks Jenni, I’ll have a look for it in town in a few minutes!
Glamazon – It’s good to know that i’m not alone in that! I just remembered that I read an article of hers in British Vogue and loved it so she may have just made it onto the list!
Hermione – I said the same thing to husband the other night…like her cooking style but don’t really like watching her unfortunately.
And I love reading cookbooks in the evening…it can be very therapeutic. One of the best for this is Nigel Slater’s Kitchen Diaries.
Colette – great! She writes for the Telegraph as well. She has a house in Westport and her book on her childhood Irish summers is lovely (but sadly out of print).
I love reading cookbooks in the evening, either on the couch or in bed.
Jenknee, I got her new book in Easons for 19.99, it should be 32.50 otherwise
Gee Gee, Best of luck with it, hope it goes well. I was a relatively good teen but went a bit wild from about 17 onwards, had a couple of mad years, even madder years in my early twenties, but I’m over it all now, do have a few regrets about it tho if I’m totally honest, but I’m all settled now
Thanks Endora, i hope it goes well too
Glamazon – yeah, you can stay over as well, but you’d need to book well in advance. The food is amazing though, and the staff are super too. Definitely a nice little treat! The last time I was there I was driving though, which meant I couldn’t have any vino…not fair!!
