The Best (and Worst) Celeb Eyebrows

brows

Ah eyebrows. A subject of much debate and product purchase (myself and Aphrodite are currently welded to our Clarins brow kits from the new season collection), we spend quite a bit of time on Beaut.ie discussing the hairy protroubences above our peepers.

I’m a tweezing devotee and I get my brows shaped by threading pretty frequently too, Aphrodite is a firm fan of Estee Lauder’s brow bar services while Lynnie tends to tame her own.

Like everything though, brows are subject to trend variations and right now we’re in a phase where a strong look is the order of day. The fat end and long-tailed ‘sperm brow’ of old has thankfully fallen out of favour and definition is back in. Also thankfully out are draw on clown brows as modeled by Mutya and Pamela Anderson, and Bert- (and Liam Gallagher) style monobrows. Phew.

Hurrah for that says I. Joan Collins is inspiring more than shoulder pads this season as her Dynasty-era brows pretty much typify that classic old-skool glam look that’s in right now. They’re groomed, they’re strong and they’re not too thin. In fact, the only thing 09s brows have over her 80s incarnation is that they should start a little closer in to the nose.

In general, I think I”ll have to say hats off  (see what I did there?) to Alexis Carrington Colby for her superglam grooming, superglossy lips and superbitchy ways, but what do you lot reckon? Are Alexis’ brows Awesome or Awful?

My brows are a similar shape to Ms Collins, maybe just a little bit thinner, and I’d never change them to suit a trend. I have seen so many women over the last few years with seriously overplucked super skinny subbley brows – I don’t see how anyone can think it looks nice.

  • cristabelle says:

Yes like Glamazon I have the similar shape but just a wee bit thinner. Those skinny ‘pencil brows’ never suited me at all, but I don’t think going any thicker on the brow area would suit me either. Some people can pull off the reall Power Brow! You GO GIRLS, wherever you are :)

    Joan Collins.

    Legend.

    End of.

  • KellBell says:

Do you think guys notice pamela’s brows?

I think Alexis’ (Joan’s) brows suit her but i prefer mine a little thicker. Well actually it’s just laziness and i can’t be bothered doing anything with them

  • Orlando says:

Have to say – those would not be my choice of Lady Joan’s eyebrows….

  • Orlando says:

KellBell – I’d say the only fella looking at Pamela Anderson’s eyebrows is prob the makeup guy who plucks them for her tbh!

  • Kirstie says:

pamela’s brows look like they were drawn on with a grey pencil. I mean, WHY??

  • KellBell says:

Maybe to detract attention away from her … cleavage???

  • MilkyMoo says:

Whatever about Joan’s eyebrows, check out her lips! Lovely lip colour…

  • Renee says:

Alexis is classic – lips, brows. Love it.
Last week I was approached by a girl from the new Benefit brow bar and whose brows were very bold and dramatic, but it suited her. Would have loved to get my brows done but afraid she’d give me the same and I’m miss au-naturalle, anti-bold and drama! I’d rather people noticed my eyes as opposed to my brows, know what I mean?

  • She-ra says:

    What a ridiculous question.

When in doubt, making ANYTHING more like Joan is the right way to go.

  • baby in a corner says:

yeah, down with the edith piaf brows! I just generally tidy mine up, I’d like more of an arch but i’m not sure where to start!

  • Ruby Woo says:

Ah jasyis, I’m after coming back from the salon where I got my eyebrows done.. Um, I think you might need to add me to the piss poor hall of shame after being scalped!

I’ve got the whole spermy eyebrow thang going on now – so not a good look!

I wouldn’t mind but I had them lovely and thick and defined going in, just wanted them tidied up again.

My poor brows! May they R.I.P. :(

  • Ruby Woo says:

I know this is really mean and I shouldn’t laugh… but God, looking at these doesn’t make me feel *quite* so bad about my wispy thin tail ends now, kinda…

I’d rather channel Joan from Mad Men than Joan Collins but better Joan Collins than the plucked out pencil replacement look! I haven’t had anything done at mine in ages. Had a scary threading time there last year where the beautician took them way too far.

  • justdroppingin says:

from an eyebrow fanatic, threading is the only way to go, it gives such a nice finish. best idea i have seen in a long time was place in a mall that did drop in brow shaping in california. Sit in a chair, get ‘er done while out for a shop. So convenient. I use benefit brow zings for about a decade now and feel unfinished without it but maybe it’s time to try this clarins product

  • Medbh says:

    I have a brow fixation.
Not a fan of Collins’ because they have too much space between them which makes her eyes look too far apart. Jennifer Connelly has a fabulous strong brow that I’d like to match. Or Ava Gardner or of course La Liz.

  • Glamazon says:

Justdroppingin – the first time I had threading done was in NY in a place like that – a threading salon that didn’t take appointments – you just lined up and there were about 6 Indian girls at hairdresser type stations. Cost $5 and took about 5 mins max. And amazing the shape they can put on…a friend had really overplucked thin brows and they managed to make them look fab. This was in early 00s and when I came back to Ireland I only found one salon threading – Aspens on Camden St but it cost about €25! Would be a great little business for someone to set up here.
