Much Love: Dermalogica PreCleanse

dermalogica pre cleanse

I’m in a bit of a cleanser limbo land at the minute.

I like to think I’m the antithesis of those desperate souls in the ad for Batchelors beans – you know the one, where people furiously shake and (ew) lick the nibs of their biros to try and get the ink flowing, or batter their toothpaste tubes to death as they attempt to eke the very last little bit out. As some loony opens her cupboard stacked full of bean tins, the voiceover wryly intones “It’s funny how you never let yourself run out of Batchelors”.

Replace “Batchelors” with “Eve Lom Cleansing Balm” and you have me.

Well, usually.

At the minute, however – somehow – I’m all out, and there isn’t a trip to an NYC or a Harvey Nicks or a Space:NK in my near future. Of course, I could try one of the dupes that now abound. Liz Earle, Boots Time Delay, Urban Retreat, The Sanctuary – all offer cleansers that polish off with a muslin cloth, but I’m saving my sheckles for the real deal and in the meantime using up make-up taker-offers that I’d nearly forgotten I had (and had long since meant to pawn off on gift to Mam and my sister.)

Luckily for my mush, I haven’t run out of my other cleansing staple: Dermalogica PreCleanse. I’ve a bottle of this magic stuff that I’m using to help send the day’s slap on its merry way down the plughole before applying Some Random Cleanser That Should Possibly Have Been Binned Last Month. It’s a cleansing oil that contains conditioning essential fatty acids to help smooth, calm and nourish skin. Aaaaah.

PreCleanse smells lavenderlicious, and in addition to shifting the likes of waterproof mascara, Double Wear and Double Wear Light without leaving a greasy residue, it lifts excess sebum and any oil-based grime without drying skin. You massage the oil onto dry skin using small circular motions before wetting your hands and massaging your face again, at which point the oil becomes a milky emulsion that rinses off easily. It’s best to apply PreCleanse to a damp cotton pad before tackling eye make-up: although suitable for use around the eye area, like any oil it stings like the bejaysis if it strays in the direction of your eyeball.

Using Dermalogica PreCleanse as a cleansing step one means that even cleansers of dubious pedigree and merit manage to pass the white muslin cloth test. I just hope it lasts until my piggy bank fills up and I manage to beg a lift to Dundrum from Himself…

….I didn’t know there was aNOTHer step before ‘cleanse, tone, moisturise’….eek!

  • Kate says:

You probably know this already but you buy Eve Lom at that beauticians on South Fredrick Street…

  • Jenni says:

Me neither Orlando – this sounds really nice, but I’m thinkin’ that I’d buy it and be too lazy to use it!

  • Jenni says:

Kate/Lynnie – is Eve Lom expensive?

  • Lynnie says:

Kirstie – ah yes, but then I wouldn’t get a trip to Dundrum out of a purchase ;)

Jenni – about 70 quid for 100ml here. In the States, you’d get a 200ml pot for the equivalent of about €100.

  • Cathspyjamas says:

Precleanse is a definite Can’t Live Without for me. Fantastic product!

  • Glitterkitty says:

oh i use this all the time!!
and i have to admit.. i don’t always, read, usually don’t have the enthusiasm for ‘proper cleanser’ afterwards.. it normally leaves my skin squeaky clean anyway!
    love it!

  • Glamazon says:

Jenni – Eve Lom is £76 for 200ml in spacenk and £10 delivery so it works out around €105ish incl del. I would only buy the 200ml as the 100ml is £40something. If you can get it in the states for €100 for 200ml I’d snap it up! As much as I love Shu cleansing oil I do think EL is the best cleanser I have ever used.

  • razzle dazzle says:

    Is Jersey beauty any good?

  • Jenni says:

Oooh Glamazon – it sounds really tempting, could it be added to the list?! What type of a cleanser is it, do you use a muslin cloth like the the LE one?

  • Jenni says:

Sorry for the double post

  • Glamazon says:

Jenni – its very thick and balmy…but a little spreads a long way. You use massage and a muslin cloth (a guide of how best to do this is in the box) like LE but I find EL much better for massage due to its oiliness (I found I had to use quite a bit of LE in order to give sufficient coverage). When you read the instructions it sounds like a bit of a palaver but it isn’t at all and 5 mins spent giving your skin a pampering cleanse before bedtime isn’t a bad thing! And the smell of EL is very clean and I think the aromatics are inteded to give a sense of wellbeing.

I have been toying with the idea of buying another tub for using a couple of times a week for a deep cleanse and sticking with Shu for everyday because I like it so much but its just so expensive.

  • Jenni says:

Glamazon – it sounds really lovely! I think I’ll pick up the 200ml in NY! Have you tried any of the other products?

  • Nic says:

I bought this product thinking it would be good for my oily skin but it brought me out in lumpy really sore spots, has this happened to anyone else?!!!

  • Glamazon says:

Jenni – yay! Its made it on to the list ;) I have the TLC cream – very very thick cream only used by me occasionally at night time…it leaves a really oily layer on skin but when I take it off next morning skin does look calm and even. I had the moisturiser with spf but chucked it – it made by cheeks sting. I’d love to try the TLC radiance – its a lighter day cream.

Be warned Jenni! Once you start using EL it will be hard to give it up…I have been searching for cheaper alternatives for a while and whilst I am happy with Shu I know deep down it is still only second best.

Joanne – is Jersey Beauty cheaper than Adonis? Adonis is around half the ROI price.

  • Brunette says:

    Hi all!

I was thinking about buying some dermalogica stuff but is it better to get the face mapping done first? Does anyone know anywhere in Limerick that does it?

  • Aphrodite says:

“Joanne” we are reporting your company to Dermalogica for misuse of Beaut.ie and your Internet provider for spam

  • Glamazon says:

 I thought she was a genuine poster.

  • Aphrodite says:

As soon as Dermalogica is mentioned it’s either them or another crowd spam the comments.
Which is totally unfair for people looking for impartial advice

  • Glamazon says:

Oh that’s a bit naughty. Didn’t realise they did that. Well spotted!

Brunette – I would definitely recommend a facial first (they’ll do the face mapping as part of your first consultation) and generally they give samples of the stuff they are recommending so you can go away and see how your skin gets on with it before any outlay. Most people seem okay with it and I loved it for years but I bought a friend a voucher once and she had her facial and bought all the products recommended and then discovered she was allergic…the salon wasn’t helpful in taking them back but Dermalogica UK refunded her…it is their policy to refund but only if you bought the products after consultation.

  • Brunette says:

Thanks Glamazon! Did you get the facial in Dublin? I’ll be up in a couple of weeks so I might book one then. I read a review on one here on beaut.ie before so I must look up the name of the salon.

  • razzle dazzle says:

right I’m boycotting Jersey beauty! Thats just sneaky “joanne” not impressed!

  • Glamazon says:

Brunette – yes I used to go regularly to a place on Upper Leeson St called Papillon but I think they have since moved to Rathgar or Rathmines…not sure. Loads of salons do Dermalogica now – its so popular – so I am sure someone on here could recommend a fairly central salon for you.

  • Mandy says:

Glamazon, Papillon have moved to Ranelagh. They’re on Dunville Avenue, just up from Mortons supermarket….in case you’re looking to go there again.

  • lochie101 says:

Brunette – As far as I know Regina’s beauty on O’connell st. in Limerick do the dermalogica face mapping. They used to do it free and give you samples to see if it suits your skin before you commit to buying it. Not sure if they still do this but might be worth finding out.

  • White Rabbit says:

I went to Pavilion in Ranelagh once where they were using only Dermatologica products and they told me that I shouldn’t be using Clinique products as they are full of alcohol and should use Dermatologica instead. I found it a bit too expensove but then they managed to sell me a small bottle of an anti blemish serum…which was great by the way!

But I’ve been wondering – is Dermatologica so wonderful? I mean is it worth the price?

  • Glamazon says:

Mandy – thanks for that. Must bear it in mind if I am nearby.

  • razzle dazzle says:

has anyone had a dermalogica facial?

  • Glamazon says:

Razzle dazzle – yes and even though I don’t use the skincare so much now it is still the only facial I would go for (apart from lotto-list facials of Eve Lom or La Prairie). I hate facials that are an hour of oily massage or one cream slathered over another – I like to feel like my skin has been deep cleansed and nourished.

  • miffyonline says:

I love the Pre-cleanse, but I think the MAC cleanse off oil and the L’Occitane Apple Almond cleansing oil are just as good (plus the L’Occitane one smells good enough to drink LOL)

As I use makeup every day I find it is a good idea to double-cleanse. I was advised this once in a Dermalogica facial and it has made a huge difference to my skin as the cleanser is really cleansing your skin rather than just removing makeup/sunscreen.

I am really tempted to try the EL stuff though, as soon as I run out of my enormous bottle of Dermalogica cleanser I might give it a shot.

  • KellBell says:

Have to say that Cleansing Oils are awesome for getting sunscreen and makeupoff and then i use a regular cleanser to actually clean my skin :)

  • razzle dazzle says:

brill, thanks Glamazon………….think I’ll try them out!

  • Ruby says:

Not a fan of the Pre-cleanse it makes my skin feel really tight after use. In fact all Dermalogica cleansers do that to my skin.

  • Joanne says:

Aphrodite- I would like to clear something up with you- I DO NOT work for Jersey Beauty or any such company like that. I have been posting here for a while, not every day but when I get the time. You should check the facts before you start throwing accusations. All I did was express an opinion that I thought a certain company were the cheapest, I didn’t realize that was a crime

  • cailín says:

dermalogica precleanse is great, i love the double cleanse, used to get so many spots, but get less now o precleanse and use special cleansing gel or my vichy normader( which i dont love as much anymore, the gel cleanser is too gloopy!)

  • Magpie says:

i used Jersy Beauty once, delivery was too slow TBH
Adonis were way quicker and for the sml difference in price Id stick with Adonis for Demalogica
Oh an I Love the PreCleanse BTW too, I use it to cleanse make-up off daily or whenever Im wearing make-up ;) , i use the muslin cloth to wash it off !
    Followed by Liz Earle C & P

  • Sunshine says:

I love Precleanse, it’s my favourite Dermalogica product. Removes everything! I wouldn’t be without it.

Recently ordered LE Cleanse & Polish but still waiting on it!

  • kelly says:

Brunette, check out http://www.dermalogica.ie for a list of places where to get Dermalogica both to purchase but also for treatments. BTW Dermalogica only sell through affiliated beauty salons.
