Every year at Beaut.ie we are inundated with panicked requests from menfolk at Christmas time.
“I don’t know what to get my wife/girlfriend/sister/girl in work that I not so secretly fancy – help me! Oh please help me!”
And every year we give suggestions, depending on budget, many of which involve GHDs (men love giving these for some reason), Chanel nailvarnish, Bobbi Brown Palettes, Mac limited editions or spa/salon vouchers. And (of course) this year every man in the land should be buying several copies of the Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous for his loved ones
Every year when the husband asks me “What do you want for Christmas?” I reply “A kitten” (because one year he actually did get me a kitten (this kitten in fact) and I never give up hope that it may happen again).
So what do you want do you really really want to get in your ahem stocking this Christmas? Rate your best gifts here and we’ll pass it on!

A man!
Lots and lots of Bobbi Brown goodies.
Holiday to NYC for me please
Last year my husband surprised me with a lovely box of Jo Malone stuff. I asked him how he organised it without me having to get involved and he said he just phoned the JM counter in BTs and asked the SA for a Lime Basil & Mandarin ‘selection box’ and they posted it to him. Lovely surprised and he was delighted with himself
A lovely mála. Meself & himself are finishing up a day early and going shopping on 23rd December. I’ll pick the bag & toddle off, he’ll buy it and get it wrapped up etc and i’ll open it Christmas day! He’ll get me a surprise too.
Hopefully there’ll be a post on what girls should get guys!
wow thats so thoughtful Glamazon! Very impressed with that! My bofy surprised me one year with Laura Mercier goodies. I was very delighted with that!!
haha Bofy!! I obv meant boyf!! But that can be his new name!
Razzle – normally he would just ask me what I want or tell me to go and buy it and he’d pay for it! This year he is accompanying me to the Bobbi Brown counter
Laura Mercier is a fab gift – I would love some of her bath honey and body creme.
This year we are going away for a few days so we said no presents. Really hope he sticks to that, it would be very embarassing to accept a gift and have nothing for him!
my boyf has gone into bts and asked for advice on what to get me, which is really sweet of him as it is out of his comfort zone.
My husband advised my best mates to buy me Jo Malone this year for my birthday – I was amazed. Apparently he does listen to my waffling when we walk around town!
I have been told I am very hard to buy for.
If I got a bottle of JADE nail varnish I’d be well impressed – think it would show he did some research and some legwork.
My boyf went into BT last year and got me a gorgeous Guess handbag, I was very surprised and impressed! This year I am in the process of providing a wish list because there are a few bits I’ve had my eye on but couldn’t justify spending money on. I love surprises though, so think he will have one or two in there are well.
Mine has bought me Dior Escale a Pondicherry EDT and I reckon there’ll be a Take That Circus DVD appearing on Christmas morning! I bought myself the BB Chrome Palette (because I’m worth it!!!
Anything pink or expensive will do me
Compiled a Wish List of 5 things I’ve had my eye on & he said he will pick 3!
expensive handbags are the best pressie ever
Babaduck – Self-gifting is an essential part of Christmas present procurement imo!
Tbh, I’m too smitten with boyf, and too much looking forward to our roadtrip for New Year’s, to care really what he gets me!
maybe creme de la mer or eve lom goodies ……stuff that i can never afford/justify buying myself
thanksfy to the lovely boyfriend’s christmas and birthday pressies I now have a cupboard full of lovely Benefit (which I could never justify buying for myself due to being a seemingly eternal student!)
He has also given me gift cards for M&S – which, despite seeming a bit unimaginative is actually one of the best presents ever – I got makeup, clothes and tasty lunches for a week out of that one!
Ah Hermione…that’s so nice.
i’d be surprised if any guy ‘got’ my taste in stuff
it’s all very well to walk into BT and ask your average SA but sure i could already have half the range or equally hate the range
i don’t think SA’s are the answer!!
jewellery.. there’s one.. if he got me some jewellery that was *me* i’d be amazed
i’m not hard to buy for but often people/friends/family/ etc don’t bother putting any effort into thinking of something i’d actu like!!
not immediate family, they’re great at stuff for me
i do remember opening a v well wrapped birthday present while in the back fo the car.. parents and sis had collected me from train
they made me open it and lo and behold, dad nearly crashed the car when i held up a cream teddy feckin lingerie thing!!!
it was for my 18th !!
i wasn’t that impressed.. not just cos of the mortification but i never liked it.. the buttons were *underneath* and sure i’d to hand wash it
i prob wore it twice
Ha, I reckon guys like buying GHDs because they’re gadgets and they can relate to that!
My boyf is a dote but has an actual terror of shopping, god love him who knows what he’ll come up with this year!!
I’d never say no to some fancy hair stuff – masks etc – or a nice BB palette or set of good make-up brushes!
also – please do a post on what girls should get guys!
I think we all love the fact that our menfolk are a bit clueless when it comes to pressie buying…let’s face it – if he was totally comfortable and confident in a beauty hall and knew exactly the right cosmetics/body/bath stuff to get you without any help from an SA or serious prompting/instructions/nagging from you then it would probably be a leeetle bit not right. Imagine him giving you a palette or something on xmas morning and telling you he thought it would be great with your colouring and will really show off your cheekbones.
Glitterkitty – OMG
That wouldn’t impress me either…
An ex bought me lingerie once. It looked like something a prostitute with a weird fetish might wear.
Never wore it.
Hubby’s great on the present front. He puts a lot of thought and effort into it.
monty.. this was tasteful but just not what i was expecting
my mother told me that dad had asked how my boyf had known where to get ‘that kind of thing’!!
mind you, she also wanted to know how he knew where to get it!!
Glitterkitty – My parents would probably ask the same thing!
is this post to make the singletons feel bad
can we have one about what to self-gift this year??!!
Candi – Self gifting is mighty important to you know!
You could start it now – what you would love to get yourself?
Good idea candi. I self gifted my BD present which was in Nov. I have not decided on xams christmas yet.
I much prefer it tbh becaue I never got a present I was super impressed with. Impressed with the thought and effort but the gift itself was only so so.
right on candi ;P
I’ve no problem there MontyC, in fact I only self-gifted loads of REN goodies during the week…..still it was 20% off so I guess I could do a bit more self-gifting before the season is out. Definitely a Laura Mercier Primer is on the list. Also advanced night repair serum. Dying to try that.
Candi – Plenty time left
I made a wish list as I love surprises and my boyf hates surprises…hopefully i will see one or two on my lap xmas morn
includes….BB plum brushes, Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb, lifetime supply of massages, laser hair removal treatment, gym membership…on and on and on with treats!
Jewellery is always a safe bet by my boyfriend, he picks the most delicate, simple silver/white gold and diamond pieces that are very me, I don’t like anything too mad during the day.
Last christmas we gave eachother silly presents as well as our proper ones, I got a Mister Bump last year and this year I got Elmo Live (he already gave me the silly part for this year cos he wanted to see it working, and its class!!!)
Also, I think self gifting is so important coming up to xmas cos you can get so stressed trying to get pressies for everyone else sorted.
Hmm – myself and himself have put a limit on the pressies this year of €100, as we’ve gone overboard on previous years and it has to stop somewhere! Last year I got a fab diamond necklace (to match the diamond earrings I’d gotten the year before). He also got me these two amazing canvases (pics) with loads of cool shoes on them – I’d seen them on the wall of a shoe shop in Ranelagh and every time we passed the shop I’d be glued to them! So he went into the shop one day and asked the girl who owned the shop where she had bought them and she’d bought them from some Dutch shop, so she gave him the phone number of the shop in Amsterdam and he went and ordered them for me! He got them framed for me then, and presented them on Christmas day. I was more impressed with the huge effort he’d gone to with them than I was with the necklace! As I just got the engagement fáinne, it will be something very small this year – but I don’t mind!
Jenni – have you ever seen Nina DiVito paintings…love them. All shoes.
Jenni – Wowsers, I’d be more impressed with the prints too! That’s a lot of effort to put into one present, the dote!
Glamazon – I bought about 5/6 copies of her pieces in New York! I love them! They’re in my Mums though at the moment, I’m saving them for my next house. Will get nice frames for them when the time comes…soon I hope!
Hermione – I know, I couldn’t believe it. Literally every time we’d pass the shop I’d stop and stare for about 5 mins. They’re in the window of that shoe shop on the triangle in Ranelagh, think it’s called Cinderella. Check them out if you’re ever in that neck of the woods!
Jenni – fabulous. I’d love one of her big canvasses for my bathroom but no more paintings for me for a while
That is seriously thoughtful of him to get you those prints. Huge brownie points earned there! Amazing gift.
I’m not sure how to go about it this year, I’ve had my eye on a few bits I could hint about but I love suprises at the same time! Who thinks I should leave it to himself? It is a gamble though…
Last year he got me a juicy couture make up bag which was very cute actually. Of course the real gift was the big laugh after he, bursting with pride, said “well I saw that wallet and I thought you’d like it alright…”
How much money does he think I carry about?! Bless.
Any pretty bag would be great, river island have some great ones, a weekend away, benefit are always great and soap and glory sets are highly recommended!!
Ooh, S&G stuff was my xmas self gift this year! Although I’ve still a few presents left to get so who knows, when I’m finished shopping, I might treat myself to some new perfume…
