Ooh La Lashes: Cathyfly Checks Out Lash Extensions Up To my Eyes

lashes

I blame Cheryl Cole.

It seems the humble mascara isn’t enough for us any more. The amazing growth in popularity of eyelashes in the past few years means that no makeup application is complete without the addition of a set of false eyelashes to finish off the party look. The availability of high quality false lashes on the high street (from Mac to Ardell) has given all of us access to a beauty trick previously the preserve of make-up artists and those lucky enough to avail of their services.

The latest development in our love affair with false lashes is the growth of lash bars and lash specialists around the country who are now offering semi-permanent eyelash extensions that promise to last up to six weeks.  One such specialist is Elaine McParland of Up to my Eyes in Greystones, who I paid a visit to a couple of weeks ago for a Xen Tan, and who has customers travelling from all over Ireland to have her add flutter to their peepers. As well as adding glamour to your look, lash extensions can also be a godsend for anyone who has very fine eyelashes, including older women or anyone who has suffered from hair loss.

Up to my Eyes is located in a spacious studio beside Elaine’s home in Greystones, a very relaxing and welcoming space, with amazing ‘before and after’ photos on the walls of clients who’ve had lash extensions. First, I filled out a questionnaire designed to assess my eye sensitivity and what type of effect I wanted to go for. Elaine explained the different types of lashes available – there’s a mind-boggling selection of lengths, finishes, colours and curl types, and three strengths of glue for different levels of eye sensitivity. I had been a bit nervous, but I knew I was in good hands, as this is clearly a lady who is passionate about lashes and really knows her stuff.

Trend Watch: Will Cat Flicks EVER Fall Out of Favour?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

liner

Trends come, trends go. I make a particular note of keeping watch of them and while we’ve got great big macro trends like organics and mineral makeup dominating the beauty industry, there are also many tiny, micro trends that pop up for a month or even just a week: mint nails, tribal-syle body art and mad Countess Markievicz hair are three recent weeny fads we’ve taken a look at.

One that’s taken on cockroach-like permanence has been the gra for feline eyes. Boy, has it lasted. And lasted. Through season after season - and literally through thick and thin - we’ve seen some variation (letterbox liner, anyone?) on the cat flick now for several years. In beauty terms, this basically means that you’ve been drawing liner above your lashes since the cosmetics world was united as one in a smushed-up eyeshadow and lipstick version of Pan(stick)gea.

Will it ever fall out of fashion? I’m not so sure - so we better have a poll. Pick your pref, and spill your liner-beans in the comments. Is it here to stay?

Mini Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks: All Together Now, Awww!

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

minishimmerbricksandstone

Oh ok, I know, barely a week goes by on Beaut.ie without me raving about the latest, greatest bits from Bobbi Brown, but even if you’re not as big a fan as me, you’ll see she’s excelled recently with launches that keep trumping the last in scope and wow-factor.

These babies are just so adorable I couldn’t resist posting them, even though they’re really tiny and really bloody expensive: €55 is the damage for these travel-sized shimmer brick metal compacts.  They’d make a great luxe stocking filler and there are three limited edition offerings available. Above left is plum (best on a darker skintone I reckon), to your right is sandstone, and there’s one more after the cut.

Here Comes Christmas: Dior Christmas Look

dior-cristal-boreal-eyeshadow-in-purple-gem

Fittingly, for the festive season Dior have gone all out with sparkles and spangles, but they’re SOPHISTICATED spangles, ladies - are you hearing me? Needless to say, I oohed and ahhed like a good one over the lot and far from sniffily turning my nose up at the multitude of shine and shimmer, I fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I’d pretty much decided that post-30, glitter was O.U.T (channeling Daniel Chavez there, wha?) but I’m seriously wavering. Ok, not wavering. WEARING.

Ah feck it, rules were meant to be broken. So what’s what? Above you can see the two Cristal Boréal Crystal Eyeshadows in Silver Gem and Purple Gem. Now, at €30, they are undeniably pricey. They’re also undeniably nice. I do love a Dior shadow, the pan is quite a good size and the bling-factor is truly most excellent. Joining the sparkly pair is Dior Vernis Long-Wearing Nail Lacquer Silver Purple, €21.50.

More pix plus a full listing of products (all are limited) and prices are after the cut.

SS10: Giorgio Armani Nude Contrasts

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

ga

“Mr Armani is all about the play of light and shadow,” revealed Linda Cantello when she was showcasing the forthcoming Spring collection from the Giorgio Armani brand the week before last. Like everything Armani does, this collection, which consists of two chic, striped eye palettes and three nude glosses, is muted and restrained but you get what she means: stripes of pale, expensively frosted shades of old gold, pale blue and beige are cut with black and bright white. The net effect is meant to deliver a modern, soft reworking of the smoky eye.

Now, I’ll be honest, I’m not in love with this collection, the first seasonal one that Linda has completed for the brand. It’s nice, sure. The quality is as always excellent and the compacts themselves are glossy as opposed to matte and the stripes mark a departure for the line.  So it’s lovely but possibly just a bit restrained - and, I should add, maybe a bit too elegant - for me.

However, I think she’s saving up the good stuff for later in the season: the Tokyo Corals lipstick line and some gorgeous cheek colours, as well as candy-coloured nail shades are what I’m really looking forward to.  Brights! Colour! Oh yes!

But if you like the understated look of the two Palette Yeux Spring, then each costs €65, with the lip shimmers racking up at €24 a piece. All will sashay elegantly onto counters on January 7th 2010.

Poll: would you trust this makeup set?

cameleon

Now as soon as I see something like this proclaiming that it’s really really good value and has 36 eyeshadows, blushers, lipsticks and foundations and contains “trendy colours”, alarm bells start to ring. Especially when that set costs ELEVEN EURO!

Is it just me though? Oh readers am I alone in my cynicism?

What do you think of such cosmetic coffrets?

Here Comes Christmas: Estee Lauder Ultimate Red Colour Collection

Monday, November 16th, 2009

estee lauder

These babies have been on counter since the end of September but it’s only now I can begin to face the festive cheer emanating from the visuals - Ultimate Red is the Christmassy height of the Christmas collections as far as I’m aware. Red and gold? Oh Estee Lauder, you’ve got me.

The company tend to do two looks for each season and this year we have Gold Opulence and Lavish Plum. Above you can see the latter, and it’s not nearly as scary as some of the other beauty houses’ gothy offerings.  It’s got:

  • Limited Edition Signature Eyeshadow Quad in Lavish Plum, €42
  • Limited Edition Signature Lipstick in Cranberry and Blackberry, €23
  • Limited Edition Opulent Shimmer Gloss in Cranberry, €21
  • Limited Edition Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Burgundy, €17
  • Limited Edition Gel Eyeliner in Black, €23

There’s more - for a run-down of the rest of the products in the collection, check after the cut.

What’s Your Beauty Filmspiration?

fifth element

Despite the fact it’s got the detestable Chris Tucker and the heinous-to-the-maxXx Lee Evans in it, I have a huge soft spot for the Fifth Element. In fact, it’s safe to say, along with Bladerunner (also top-notch for replicant-tastic beauty), it’s one of the films I can happily watch on endless repeat - though here’s a warning against the BluRay release of the latter: unless you enjoy endless lens-flare effects and ropey 3D carry-on, it’s not really worth ditching your old VHS/DVD for.

One of the reasons for my love of the Fifth Element is the styling: Gaultier-tastic, the whole business of beauty is well catered for too - Leelo’s Chanel makeup box and Zorg’s secretary’s fancy mani-changing gadget are two things I know I’d love in my makeup kit. Imagine! Perfect smokey eyes every time! Winged cat flicks at the click of a button! Uber-professionally applied concealer and brows of perfection! The dream!

Sure you couldn’t say no. But if Chanel were to make these magic makeup boxes then please Uncle Karl, can they be set less to stun, and more to stunna?

Glow On: Benefit One Hot Minute

Monday, November 16th, 2009

one hot minute

I’ve been checking out Benefit’s newbie, One Hot Minute over the past couple of weeks, and here’s the verdict.

“For a gorgeous “gaze at me glow” sweep this loose rose-gold finishing powder over your complexion and décolleté. All it takes is…one hot minute!,” is the Benefit blurb and as usual, the packaging is pretty and witty. One Hot Minute thankfully comes in a metal tin, so it’s transportable. All good.

Also good is the dispensing mechanism inside: the interface to the powder isn’t completely open, rather it’s a bit like talc where there’s several holes punched through an inner lid, so it’s not wasteful. Bad is the brush. Yuck, I didn’t like this little wimpy approximation of a fan brush, so I ditched it, but at least it gives you a clue as to how you should apply this - whisper-fine, a light touch is what’s required.

The powder itself is a peachy-bronze that feels nice and silky and has subtle shimmer. It’s pretty, but the problem for me is that there’s just too much colour in it and I did look like I was having a hot minute. A hot flush minute. Sigh.

The only reason this isn’t for me is because I’m too pale as it is and it’s November - I’ll revisit this in the summer, but if your skintone is darker or you go for that look then this is going to be a hit.  You can use it elsewhere too - down the legs and on the décolleté, which makes it a bit of a multi-tasker if the shade suits. €34.50 is the damage but you’ll get it cheaper if you go direct to www.benefitcosmetics.com.

Wow: Stila’s Smokey Eye Palette at CheapSmells is AWEmazing Value

Friday, November 13th, 2009

stila-cosmetics-smokey-eye-palette

In today’s post on silver-tastic slap, Little Blue alerted us to the amazing bargantasticness of this Stila Smokey Eye kit on CheapSmells.com.

It’s one of their hokey-press-a-button-and-it-talks doofers but the cheesiness of that aside, Stila eyeshadows tend to be excellent. The brand is restructuring and all the old stock is going for a song but even so, the €9.73 this currently costs represents a huge saving, and this palette is just the ticket for getting this morning’s look.

Oh, and Little Blue also reliably informs us that “Incidentally Ronan Keating fragrance is only €6.06 at moment!” Heh heh.
