Arnotts New Beauty Hall Launches: Impresses Mightily

arnotts

I’ve been waiting for this one for a while, bringing you news of a couple of new brands that were incoming to Arnotts, but hearing about the new developments was one thing; seeing them last night through a champagne-filled haze of happy was quite another. Psst: there were oysters on the half shell doing the rounds too, doused in dry ice, if you don’t mind.

Forget the food, lets concentrate on the matter at hand. the new hall is gorgeous: immaculate, shiny white, spotlit and limestone-floored, the windows to the front are now open to view from Henry Street. The new beauty hall takes up where the old one left off and is now twice the size (it’s now the biggest in the country), spreading shiny painted nails into the old shoe area, which is now to the back of the store. It’s also managed to chew up a lot more space behind the escalators in the middle and seamlessly runs over towards gents fashions. It’s massive.

(And yes, I know that’s a pic of the bags, but as far as I know, the beauty hall didn’t receive its finishing touches until yesterday, so please forgive and imagine the gorgeousness within your brain.)

Everything has had a make-over, including the brands in situ, all of whom have gorgeous, spacious new counters. Many have moved position - Dior is now at the front, Origins has a new round counter behind its old one and YSL is now beside the escalators.

There are three main things of note for Beaut.ies:

  1. The jam-packed perfumery to the front right hand side of the shop is gone. In its place is a jewellery section and the new perfumery is behind the escalators, abutting shoes and the Wolfords/tights area. Spacious, with lots of room to browse, it’s packed full of great brands like Anick Goutal, Prada, Acqua di Parma, D&G, Viktor & Rolf, Marc Jacobs and tons more.
  2. Neelu has moved into a location right beside said perfumery. She has an 1200sq ft salon on the floor which includes four mani stations, and three treatment rooms where she’s doing everything from threading to IPL to massage, facials and pedis. Her range of mineral makeup and brow kits are also on sale.
  3. There are TONS of new brands. You already know about Make Up Store (really, really impressive, by the way) and kaplanMD, but that’s not the half of it.

Rate it: buying cosmetics on ebay

ebay-logo

Buying cosmetics online can be fraught with danger. And also fraught with temptation. If a favourite is discontinued you’ve told us before how you’ve found one another again on ebay.

Plus, what about those prices? What if you’re the only one to have stumbled upon this particular cut price listing - and you know it’s worth a fortune.

Your heart is racing and you’re saying to yourself “A Mac set with 37 eyeshadows plus brushes for how much?!”. Your head on the other hand is murmering “Easy partner. At that price they can’t be real.”

And your heart replies “But they might be.”

So it’s all too easy to bid (or hit the Buy It Now button and get that jolt of instant gratification). Oh the euphoric feeling of winning the auction cannot be beaten. But will it all end in tears when the parcel lands on your door mat?

What have your experiences been of buying cosmetics through auction sites. Would you recommend it - or not?

Incoming to Arnotts: Make Up Store

make up store

I have a huge soft spot for Arnotts: it’s where I was taken yearly to get my school uniform and no visit was complete without a visit to the cafe, which is now no more. Arnotts has changed a lot over the years and it’s changing again - right now the beauty hall is under renovation, due to re-open properly next month.

The brand offering was already great - the store boasted a lot of relatively hard-to-find brands like Guerlain, Origins and Darphin - but with the re-launch, it’ll get even better, with companies like Becca coming on board. But there are a couple of new-to-Ireland lines too, and here’s the heads-up on one of them today.

Make Up Store is a Swedish brand much loved by the wonderful Kat over at Bjooti.net.  A little like a scandi Make Up For Ever from what I can make out, the range is maaaa-hassive: tons and tons of products for eyes, lips, cheeks and face abound and we’ll soon get to check it out for ourselves.

Hurrah for new beauty brands, eh?

Best (and Worst) Budget Salons #3: Glitterkitty checks out Tien Du

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

We’ve been on a mission recently to see if we can save some beauty pennies by reviewing some of the ‘budget salons’ that have popped up around Dublin and Ireland in recent years, and we asked for your help!

This week’s review is thanks to Glitterkitty, who decided to try Tien Du hair salon on Capel St in Dublin.

She’s a fussy girl when it comes to her hair, is our Glitter, having previously been coiffed in high-end establishments like Vanilla in Rathmines and Kameleon in Drogheda. So could the promise of a cut-price (pardon the pun) ‘do in a budget salon measure up to her exacting standards?

Take it away, GK:

Barbara Daly for Tesco Relaunches & Full Store Availability

Barbara Daly for Tesco

Barbara Daly for Tesco is one of those bubbling-under brands that’s not particularly sexy. Ok, it’s actually not even remotely sexy, but it is really affordable and some of the bits in the range are great quality, giving you ace basics at reasonable prices. I like the concealer a huge amount; Lynnie rates the polishes and I know a load of you Beaut.ies are fans of various bits and bobs too.

It’s been disappearing out of stores for a while though and we’ve been hearing tales of woefully understocked stands. That’s probably to do with the fact that the products were due a re-design and re-launch.

That time, thankfully, is now! Tesco are reporting that the products are in-store, with a swanky new look attached. Prices are as good as they’ve always been, with Cheek to Cheek Blush at €5.94, Easy on the Eye Pen, €6.99 and Designer Eyes Trio Eyeshadow a mere €6.65.

So where is Barbara Daly for Tesco available? A full store listing is after the cut.

Beauty Salon Spy: Beaut.ie goes undercover

salon spy

The licensed trade are kept on their toes by journos like Pub Spy - someone who visits, rates the ambiance, the felicities (as Kirstie used to call the jacks when she was a nipper), the price of a pint and most importantly the pint itself.

It’s a great idea and we’ve visited many salons to give you a heads up on what to expect. (It’s a hard life but someone’s got to do it etc.)

However there’s one big problem with this.

Evasive VS Invasive: have you had a non-evasive treatment at the beauty salon?

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

EVASIVE

istock_000006145549xsmall

The stupidist things have been said to me at the beauty salon by therapists who don’t know their arse from their elbow (as Beaut.ie Dad would say).

One of these is: “This is a great treatment. And it’s non-evasive!”

Non-evasive? What the hell is that? The first time I heard it I thought we were just having a misunderstanding, vocally speaking. But no, we weren’t.

Because even when I try to query this statement and ask do they mean non-INVASIVE (with a heavy empasis on the IN) the beauty therapist will invariably brightly twitter back:

“Yes exactly! Non-evasive”

At which point I normally give up and keep my beak shut.

I’ve actually seen salons advertise treatments as non-evasive.

Non invasive is medical speak and it refers to treatments that don’t involve cutting you open with a knife or similar. Treatments like non-surgical facelifts and glycolic peels are non invasive for example. Facelifts are invasive. Liposuction is invasive.

But somehow it’s got all mixed up and beauty salons describe facials as non-invasive as though this is now a big deal. Like duh -uh. (Of course some salons are super duper and staff are highly qualified, I’m only speaking about my experiences in other ones.)

Ever since salons started to offer botox they feel that they are able to talk the medical talk. They aren’t.

But if you ‘re in the mood for a non-evasive treatment go right ahead!

Inglot to Open in Liffey Valley on July 3rd

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

inglot

If you’ve been through Liffey Valley recently you’ll may have noticed that right inside the main entrance there’s  a bit of shop-fitting going on, and it’s very much of Beaut.ieful interest: Inglot cosmetics are opening there on the 3rd of July.

I don’t know a whole lot about the brand barring one of their stores I’ve been to at London’s Westfield and at a quick glance then I thought that it’s a fit between GOSH and MAC in terms of fun and colour - quite like Sephora’s own-brand stuff, in fact.

Originally a Polish company, Inglot has a presence in Australia and Canada and looks set to expand further, too.

No idea on what prices will be like yet, but regardless - hurray for choice, says I.

Coming to a pub jacks near you: vending machines to be next big thing for beauty purchases

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

elizabeth-arden-vending-machine

Sounds bizzaro, but it’s true. According to my swotty economic readings, vending machines are set to become the latest craze in beauty purchasing. They’ve already been in situ in the States for a couple of years, with with names like Elizabeth Arden and Coty packing their products into snazzy new machines.

Ever since vending machines evolved into beasts capable of taking electronic payment cards, instead of whatever change you had lying around at the bottom of your handbag, the possibilities for them expanded. Ipods, cameras and champagne are all available already (along with the staples: black liquid optimistically called coffee, out of date Kit Kats, Tic Tacs and condoms).

While I wouldn’t particularly fancy buying foundation from the old fag machine down in the local I can see the advantages. Run out of mascara or lipgloss after the chemist is shut? The vending machine could be a veritable life saver.
