As a big fan of the Game of Thrones tv show, it was really only a matter of time until I started to read A Song of Ice and Fire, the series by George R.R. Martin, which the show is based on. By the time I eventually picked up the first book, I expected to find it slightly tedious as I had watched the first two seasons three times at that stage, and knew exactly what was going to happen all the way through the story.
Boy was I wrong. I can’t put the fecking thing down and try to squeeze in as much reading as I can. I’m reading it on my lunchbreak in work, in bed when I should really be sleeping, when I’m waiting on a prescription in the chemist. If it’s raining in the morning, I’m secretly glad because it gives me an excuse to get the bus to work instead of walking, so I can sneak in another chapter.
Instead of being bored by the storyline that I know inside out at this stage, I’m loving all the extra details and backstories and little differences between the book and the show. Although the fact that many of the main characters are around fourteen in the book makes it feel a little bit like that old Bugsy Malone film that had an all-child cast, including a tiny Jodie Foster. (Does anyone else remember that film? I'm pretty sure I didn't hallucinate the whole thing.) It also makes fancying Robb Stark or Jon Snow kinda difficult when they're practically children in it. At least Khal Drogo is still fair game though.

I can’t wait to get the point where I overtake the tv show and won’t know what happens next anymore until I read on. It’s utterly compulsive reading and with five books in the series so far and all of them huge, I’m going to be busy for quite some time. It’s been ages since I’ve been so obsessed with a book. For a while there I just figured I didn’t have the time to get properly stuck into a good read, but it turns out that I ended up making the time when I really wanted it.
