The Wedding Speech Song – Cringeworthy or Romantic?

By Anna | January 14 2013 | 19 Comments

I am not a fan of McFly. Not only do their cheesy boy-band-with-guitars songs leave me cold, but they have sullied the name of one of the finest characters in movie history, Marty McFly of Back to the Future fame. So when I heard that one of the band, Tom Fletcher, had made a speech at his wedding in the form of a song adapted from some McFly hits, my initial reaction was to roll my eyes. It sounds, as one friend said, like something out of a Richard Curtis film. Which is not necessarily a good thing as far as I’m concerned. And also it’s, you know, McFly.

And yet, when I saw the video of Fletcher announcing “”I don’t have any idea how to write a good speech but I do know how to write a song, so I hope this isn’t cheating my way out of it too much” then declaring his love to his new wife Giovanna Falcone in a sort of McFly medley, I must admit, my stony heart was just a little bit touched. The lyrics were cheesy, the tunes were (being McFly) even cheesier, and yet you couldn’t really doubt his sincerity. I might have even shed a tiny grudging rear when he got a choir in to sing ‘All About You’ Though he did go on what feels like about five years (the full video is actually nearly 15 minutes long and includes a tribute to his best men and his parents), you can tell he means it. And his new wife doesn’t seem to mind.

So were you moved by Fletcher’s sung speech, or did you think it was sentimental rubbish? Would you appreciate your other half doing something similar at your own nuptial ceremony, or would you be cringing your way under the table? And were you distracted by the fact that they seem to be actually having the wedding reception in the church (seriously, what’s with the stained glass) ?
