The Braid is Back: Are The Odds in Your Favour You’ll Be Wearing it?

Katniss' braids

Braids have been making fashion waves for the last few years but The Hunger Games has thrown them into sharp focus once more thanks to Katniss’ District 12 ways. The braid is back, and cor blimey if it isn’t seven shades of confusing. Oh no, it’s not a plait anymore, you understand. Now it’s a wrap-around-your-head milkmaid yoke or a fishtail, Edwardian (no, me either), reverse, Dutch, inside-out, Grecian … Jaysis you’d be exhausted even getting to grips with the names, let alone bending your arms back around your head to actually put one together.

Katniss had her ma, Cinna and her prep team to help her out: we have Pinterest as our secret weapon. Thankfully, no one is throwing us into an arena full of vile predators where our shameful downfall will be screened live for the nation either. Well – that’s between you and your Tallafornia season two application form I guess. But don’t say we didn’t warn you!

So, here are some lovely looks we’ve pinned to our Braids board on Beaut.ie’s Pinterest profile (what? You didn’t know we’re on Pinterest!? WELL WE ARE! We’re right here so follow us immediatement). There’s lots more braid-based goodness up there too – have a goo and let us know in a comment if:

a) you’re gonna bother with this whole plait palaver in the first place

and

b) what your favourite braid style is

To the comments!

(Psst: the next film we’re tipping for beauty madness is Snow White and the Huntsman. Benefit are the official makeup partner and in the US, there’s even a kit being released for the film but it will be a state-side exclusive and won’t see the light of day here. eBay will be your pal or else it will – fingers crossed – be available from the US Benefit website. Regardless, we’ll be seeing a lot of gorgeous beauty looks from the film, I’d wager)

Would love to be able to do this but i can’t do it without making it look like i had a stroke mid way

  • I like to use a plait the odd time to help tie away a side fringe if it’s annoying me!

I didn’t really know they were out of season….weird huh?

I’m not really that much into hair trends to be honest….just as long as it looks nice :)

I love the front fringe braid/plait….but can’t get the hang of doing it myself….I think I need to grow an extra arm!!!

  • MsSitting says:

It looks beautiful, but I presume you need thick romantic hair like Helena Bonham Carter in ‘A Room With A View’.

What a coincidence!! I’m wearing a side french plait this morning, inspired by Rachel Khoo. I love plaits – they are low maintenance but look like you’ve made an effort.

I love the Katniss braid!! It looks awesome. I would have tried it if I wasn’t so bad at braiding. All my life, I had long hair and I can’t braid -_-

My all-time fav braid should be the French braid. Current fav is the Katniss braid, which is, in a way, partly a type of French braid anyway.

I don’t like Kristen Stewart as an actress but I am so excited about Snow White and the Huntsman. The trailer looks great.

I love plats/braids/whatever you want to call them, but alas my hairbrush has more hair than I do these days, so they always come out little skinny ‘yokes so I don’t do them very often :( Would love long thick locks that I could play around with.. Oh Katniss what I would give for your hair!!

  • SJP's Missing Mole says:

Have tried repreatedly to do plaits along the front, but it just ends up looking like a plaited Hitler fringe, as I cant keep it small enough.

Love the look though, especially with a bob like mine which isnt long enough to throw up in a messy bun anymore.

  • Uh I love braids for the spring/summer!!! There is an amazing girl on youtube that breaks down all the Hunger Games styles and also other amazing hairstyles in case anyone’s interested….. http://www.youtube.com/user/LetsMakeitUp1?ob=0&feature=results_main

Love plaits of all kinds. My hair was plaited more or less for 20 years. Can’t do them in my hair as it’s too thick and only shoulder length these days, so the DD get the full force of the braids.
They keep your hair nice and tidy, and they also discourage head lice (so I’m told – and she’s been the only one in class lice free on more than one occasion).
Plaits can look complicated, but they’re actually quite easy. If you’re having trouble, go for an across the head plait moving towards the direction of your weaker hand (that is, right to left if you’re right handed). The easiest if all is two half plaits in three strand like a wee girl’s (if you’re young enough in body or at heart to carry it off). French plaits are easier on yourself, Dutch on other people. Herringbone looks pretty and is relatively easy but take aaaaages to do. Do not pull plaits too tightly while braiding as you can break your hair!

At the moment my hair isn’t long enough for plaits, but when it was I used to love mucking around with them… Really like the top left photo – Emilia Fox has had her hair styled in this way in a few episodes of the new series of Silent Witness and it’s gorgeous on her.

Oh I have a braid in my hair today :) It was the easy option instead of washing, blow-drying and straightening my hair :) I can do a loada dif ones, I managed a fishtail once but I have forgotten how to do it now……I have in the past had the first four plaits/ braids above in my hair. I’d love to manage the last day, they look fab!

  • Ah I lament my Rapunzel days, had hair to the back of my knees (no exaggeration) until I was 30 and the plait was my very best friend.

I do still dally in the odd braid, my Pinterest board on Gorgeous Grúaig is filled with the beauties http://pinterest.com/cherrysuedoin/gorgeous-gruaig/

I’ve considered using a hair piece for bulk and length after seeing Ros Pike as Andromeda in Wrath of the Titans, her hair was braided stunningness.

Btw having seen some footage for Snow White and the Hunstman the WANT is going to be enormous for that make up, Kirstie, Charlize was enough to make me forget Plank with a Face, Kristen Stewart is even in the film.

  • Nicola says:

Oh, I love all of those styles. I adore plaits, but I can never do them as well. It always just looks a little bit shit. But they would always be my up do of choice, if someone else was doing it for me of course. I kept meaning to mess around with it this week, funnily enough.

A while ago I managed the side French plait with just the front sections, but it still looked a little bonky. Embarrassingly, I always loved Lauren Conrad for that hair style (please don’t judge).

So now I’ll definitely check out that youtube video, Princesswatshername, and all the pinterest pictures that will undoubtedly make me feel inadequate. I can’t tell you how many youtube tutorials I’ve sat in front of, tangled in my own hair and crying a little.

  • littlesis says:

I have always been mad for an auld plait. In fact, I am wearing a little one now, to keep the front bit of my hair back. I love them, perfectly casual but still pretty.

  • cici bee says:

I spent many a day practising my plaits on my girlsworld head, only for me to then take a scissors to her hair and give her a pixie crop!never got the hang of those fancy pants plaits, can only do your common plain Jane plait:-(

  • Claireyfairy says:

Hair stlyes like these make me want long hair again! I’m currently sporting a chin length bob as I grow it out from a pixie crop! I can’t wait until its long enough! I have flip in extensions but don’t think they’d work for this style at the moment + I’d have to dye my hair to wear them!

  • Fee-oh-na says:

I have waist length, unbelievably thick, wavy hair. Plaits are a lifesaver for when I’m having a bad hair day. Only problem is, by the time I’m halfway done, my arms are aching and because my hair is so thick, they often turn out looking like lengths of knotted rope. I find, it helps sometimes to straighten my hair first. Herringbone plaits are my current fave, easy peasy to do but they do take their sweet time. French plaits are my no-fail quick hair fix!

  • MsSitting says:

Can fine hair to this? I’ve tried to do plaits but I couldn’y escape the feeling that I look like the alien in Predator.
