Tangerine Dream: Orange Lips For Summer From Maybelline, Revlon, ARTDECO, NYC

Orange Lips Trend 2012

We weren’t sure about tangerine tango as the colour of the year, but orange lips have proved to be a surprisingly wearable trend. Fun, vivacious and just a little bit edgy and exotic, there’s a range of juicy shades and textures to suit every mood and skin tone.

NYC Smooch Proof Lip Stain Orange On The Go + Revlon ColouBurst Gloss Sizzle + Maybelline Citrus Slice

Colour shy? Ease your way into the look with a fruity stain or gloss, more subtle than a fully pigmented pout. A brilliant place to start is with Maybelline’s Colorsensational Popstick in Citrus Slice. It swatches clear at first but slick on a few deliciously scented layers – it smells like sweeties, yay! – for a pretty sheen with a hint of an orangey tint. It’s quite hydrating, too, and it’s €10.49.

NYC Orange On The Go Smooch Proof Lip Stain 16Hr

A shade braver? Try this latest addition to NYC’s Smooch Proof Lip Stain offerings, Orange On The Go. (See Forever Freesia here.) You get a wash of colour that’s sheer but longlasting, and a subtle fruity scent – and at €3.99, it’s the perfect way to experiment, without breaking the bank.

Another way to dip your toe in the trend is with Revlon’s ColourBurst gloss in Sizzle, €11.18. Part of Gucci Westman’s summer collection,  this is a smooth and creamy feeling gloss that’s non sticky and easy to wear. It gives a shiny, sheer pop of bright orange colour that looks incredibly juicy on the lips.

A tip off from reader JLo on this post led me the Omni in Santry (D9), where I found Revlon’s Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti  (top right, above) – the most popular shade in the UK and Ireland, this one is flying off the shelves. And I scored it for €7.45 as opposed to the usual €11.25 – delighted doesn’t begin to cover it (thanks JLo!). This is a stunning creamy orange – see it in action here.

ARTDECO Dita Von Teese Classics Collection Bon Bon

If you prefer a really pigmented punch of colour, then look no further than this little stunner from ARTDECO, €19.25. A bold and beautiful matte orange, Bon Bon is part of the newly launched Dita Von Teese Classics collection. Dita calls it a warm weather alternative to a classic red or pink pout, and I completely agree. Vibrant, creamy and opaque in just one swipe, this just divine – check out the rest of the range here.

With all of these, I like to pair ‘em with a neutral eye, defined brow, peachy blush and contrasting pink nails. It’s a look that’s quite buoyant and uplifting – will you be giving it a whirl?

  • I agree Emma, orange is much easier to wear than you’d think. I’m wearing a bright coral lippie that i got last year alot this summer (was nervous of it last year!) and it’s great. its a matte from the rimmel colour show off range last year. Thinking I might get the maybelline gloss above to wear with it for more juicy summer look!

  • I love the orange lip trend and have Revlon’s Tutti Frutti, but I need a tan before I can wear it so I’m looking forward to wearing it on my hols at the end of the month, and after I get back for the rest of August and our usual Indian Summer in September

  • Catrice do a really lovely orangey coral lipstick in black packaging, that’s fairly cheap, and my boyfriend has told me it’s the nicest lipstick I’ve ever worn!

  • Went to my local Boots earlier to pick up a few bits & was browsing the makeup, (as you do…;)) and succumbed to temptation……bad Fifibelle! Rimmel have a fab orange lipstick, it’s one of the Kate Moss range, it’s AMAZING with the Revlon lip gloss over it!!!

OT, but am feeling some serious love for Revlon at the moment, their matte eyeshadows are cracking, and I’ve bought a few of their lip glosses too, beautiful stuff

  • Aw thank for the little mention Emma, no probs at all. I’ve noticed superdrug is cheaper than boots on a lot of items.

Must check out the NYC offerings soon myself. Looks great!

  • As an Asian woman, it’s very difficult for me to wear orange. Since my skin is already yellow toned, a yellow-bases colour like orange is going to make me looking like I have liver problem. I am jealous of those of you who can wear that though! I am pushing my boundary with pink lip this summer with great success though yeah!
