Shopping My Stash: Get The 90s Look!

By Emma | September 27 2012 | 19 Comments

Because it was such a major Fashion Week trend we can be certain that the beauty brands will bring out lots and lots of 90s inspired beauty products for us to buy. Expect oceans of taupe, mink, caramel and chocolate between now and next spring – basically, if it’s brown, then it’s bang-on trend.

And actually, that’s bloody brilliant for our pockets, because who doesn’t have a rake of brownish eyeshadows and lipsticks sitting at home? Not me, anyway – I shopped my stash and came up with about a bajillion products to help me nail the 90s look.

90s eyeshadow

Here’s what I came up with for eyes:

And for lips? Swatched left to right we have:

  • Clarins Rouge Prodige in Peach Sorbet
  • Urban Decay Lip Junkie Gloss in Naked 2
  • Estee Lauder Signature Lipstick in Terracotta (check the gorgeous gold case)
  • L’Oreal Rouge Caresse in 501, Nude Ingenue (SUCH good lipsticks!)
  • Dior Addict High Shine Lipstick in Beige Style (this is years old and I love it dearly)
  • Rouge D’Armani in Beige 111 (the perfect beigey nude)
  • Collection 2000 (as was) Cream Puff Moisturising Lip Cream in Powder Puff
  • Ellis Faas Milky Lips in 206 (swatched but not photographed, my bad!)

Finally, turns out I have a few 90s neutrals for nails, an’ all:

  • ARTDECO Ceramic Nail Laquer #31 (the brown, from the autumn collection)
  • ARTDECO Ceramic Nail Laquer #69 (the café au lait shade, from the same collection)
  • Sally Hansen Commander In Chic (from the fab Complete Salon Manicure range)
  • Dior Vernis in Bengale (Dior do excellent nail polishes, this is no exception!)
  • Essie Merino Cool

Like the look of anything, or is any of it in your own stash too?

I’m bang on trend! In that I’m still wearing the same make-up as I work in the 90s (and 80s).

  • Jilly says:

Great , I won’t have to buy a thing when it comes to eyes. Just recently bought Satin Taupe from Mac and absolutely loveishh !!

  • Im Loving all the browns, so easy to wear

  • Kitty – your 90s makeup must have been so much better than mine! I had either ghost face, no blusher, gray eyeshadow and wine lips OR heather or coffee shimmer lipstick for the early 90s. Then I went more britpoppy – blue eyeshadow and bright pink lipstick was a favourite look. Then towards the end of the 90s it settled into brown eyeshadow and nude gloss, never lipstick… I am glad I am much more experimental now. xo

  • I’m loving this 90’s trend, I think you just can’t go wrong with browns/neutral colours. AND they suit most colourings which is great. It makes me cringe though when I think how I wore my makeup in the 90’s. Lipliner worn only on the outline of my mouth being the worst I think! :-S

@ Emma – your description of pale foundation and no blusher reminds me of my first makeup attempts.

This time around I think I’m sorted on a few things! I’ve so many different brown eyeshadows already – so that’s that one sorted! I picked up a nail polish colour similar to that Essie colour – sorted again! Also, I’m sure that I’ve a few lipsticks that I can use for the 90’s look also!

Yipee – for once I’m on trend before it happens! I new this day would happen eventually

  • LynnieDoll says:

Heather Shimmer – now that’s a blast from the past, I must have gone through 20 tubes of that lipstick, along with all of my friends. Adored it….
And Max Factor Pan stick, another of my ‘couldn’t live withouts’ when I was a teenager. Horrendous!!!!

  • Sarah says:

Brown, you really cant go wrong with brown. Thank god its not one of those Pink or Blue trends

  • Chris says:

I have a whole drawer devoted to brown/beige eyeshadow. I love this trend!

  • Babodpower says:

@Emma you’ve pretty much described the 2 lipsticks I (and every one of my friends)wore through the whole of the 90’s,Coffee and Heather Shimmer!!! Don’t know how Rimmel managed to keep them in stock back then.

  • Donna says:

I love brown/taupe/beige colours. Loads of lipsticks, eye shadows and even blushes(Smashbox one in old packaging), and nail colours.

  • mummypupper says:

O God,panstick!!If it wasn’t thick and the texture of concrete I didn’t wear it.My 90’s face was a deathly pale mask with no blusher or hint of my natural skin.Blue eyeliner was my trademark, maybe I’m thinking of the 80’s with the liner though. And all topped off with either heathershimmer or no.7 plum beautiful lippie, and plastic earrings

  • Lisa says:

ghost face, no blusher, gray eyeshadow and wine lips

Hee, that was my early-90s look as well, with occasional forays into red lipstick if I was feeling adventurous.

Still have lots of lovely taupe-y/brown eye colours but I can’t, can’t do browny nude lipsticks. My natural lip colour is quite dark/red and anything too brown or pale makes me look like one of the undead.

  • littlesis says:

A brown will never go away, really. It’s just so versatile. My top picks are Mac’s Satin Taupe, Bobbi Brown shadow in Fawn and a gorgeous Giorgio Armani sheer lipsick in Brown.

  • Gas how many of us were wearing the exact same Rimmel lipsticks! I also loved one they had called birthday suit – anyone else wear that? I thought it was the very image of Pamela Anderson’s lippie shade and wore it with much darker lipliner…obvs!

  • EllieSausage says:

I’m a Heather Shimmer culprit too!!!!…OMG…and I will admitt it…I also used Pan Stick in the shade ‘ORANGE’!!!…and LOVED IT!!!

Never used blusher, just bronzer- all over the puss, grey eyeshadow- no mascara or eyeliner (don’t think i even knew what they were for back then!!!)

Thinking back, orange pan stick coupled with cheap brozer I must have been very orange..& considering my skin tone is super pale I really think could have pulled off a Goth look alot easier!!!

  • Alice says:

Hey! That was me too! -> ghost face, no blusher, gray eyeshadow and wine lips
    That and really matt lipsticks.
Actually I am more mortified to think about the turn of 2000. I used way too much glitter on lipsticks and eyeshadow and everything, I look like a disco ball in picture!
I like this brown trend, I think brown is very flattering to everyone, especially now in my 30s, very flattering indeed :-P

  • Lorna says:

I have about half of the products you mentioned already! Happy days. I can’t believe the amount of comments mentioning Heather Shimmer. I LOVED that lipstick as a teenager. Didn’t wear any other colour for years.

  • Elle says:

Coffee shimmer and darker lip liner in my early teens – eeeek at least we didn’t have any social media sites then (also wore panstick and heavy max factor pressed powder) wonderful times but bad make-up!
