Inside the bathroom cabinet: my current skincare routine

By xgirl | June 10 2011 | 36 Comments

I’ve changed it up a bit with my skincare routine recently – coming out of winter my skin is not as dry as it was anymore and using sunscreen on a daily basis again meant a change in my cleansing routine was needed. So as I surveyed the bathroom cabinet last night (it’s in need of a clear-out anyway and Himself has been complaining about my “half” spilling over into his), I thought it was time for a little post on my current routine.

  • Kiehl’s Acai Damage-Minimizing Cleanser: This is a handy travel-sized bottle that came free with the Acai serum. I don’t usually use a cleanser in the morning, but since I’ve been using the Bio-Effect EGF Serum at night, I feel I need a bit more than a splash of water to rinse it off in the morning. The Kiehl’s cleanser is quick and easy to use and leaves my skin fresh and clean, but not stripped.
  • Origins Clean Energy Cleansing Oil: I use this for removing makeup and sunscreen and still like it as much as I did when I last posted about it.
  • REN HydraCalm Cleansing Milk: Sometimes my skin feels a bit more delicate than usual and I find a milk cleanser feels a bit nicer to use than an oil cleanser, which is when this one comes on. I’ve also blogged about this one before under its previous name – love it.
  • Elave Facial Cleanser: When I bought this I mistakenly thought it was a foaming gel-type cleanser, handy for use in the shower when I’m washing my hair and want to use something quick on my face. It’s actually a cleansing cream, but I’m still using it in the shower and it works well to remove makeup even without a muslin. No frills packaging and no bells or whistles involved, but nice and gentle, yet effective, for sensitive skin.
  • Caudalie Organic Grape Water: Used after cleansing and before applying serum or moisturiser – really helps skin to absorb oil-based products in particular and feels lovely and refreshing on the skin.

UV Protection:

  • Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream SPF30: I blogged about this last summer and I still like it as my daily sunscreen. It provides plenty of protection for normal days when I don’t have much sun exposure and it keeps my skin nice and soft.
  • Caudalie Soleil Divin Anti-Ageing Face Suncare SPF50: I decided to try this one for the first time this summer, on the off-chance that we ever see enough sun for me to want more than SPF30, that is. I find it more fragranced than I’d like and the application isn’t as easy as it is with the Shiseido, but once on it has no shine or stickiness and wears well all day.

Treatment and Hydration:

  • Kiehl’s Acai Damage Repairing Serum: I like the idea of an anti-oxidant serum under sunscreen – both to add moisture and boost protection. What a surprise – I’ve blogged about this one before too!.
  • Trilogy Age-Proof Nutrient Plus Firming Serum: Another favourite, I alternate this one with the Kiehl’s some days when my skin feels a bit more sensitive and needs a very gentle hydration boost.
  • Bio-Effect EGF Serum: Kirstie’s review made me really curious about this, and I’ve been using a sample of this at night for a couple of weeks now. While I love that I only need to apply one product after cleansing, I’m still waiting to see if the effects are visible enough for me to consider splashing out on it, considering the high pricetag. So far my skin hasn’t reacted badly and it does feel nice and smooth, but I’d need some hardcore improvements to spend the full price on it.
  • Caudalie Vinexpert Anti-Ageing Serum for Eyes and Lips: I use this in the morning to firm up and smooth out the under eye area (I also use this at night when not using the Bio-Effect EGF Serum). It makes the under eye area look much smoother, plumper and brighter and doesn’t bother my sensitive eyes at all.

Are you using/have you used any of these products?

I have the Origins Clean Energy and really love it. I use it when i don’t feel like the doing the rubbing action with the eve lom cleanser. Its lovely and mild and very effective at getting everything off in one go.

  • Great post xgirl.

I only heard of Caudalie about 6 weeks ago but I’m using a lot of their stuff at the moment and really loving them.

Am on a tight budget girls so am using good ole Nivea esentials cleanser with a muslin cloth to take my makeup off, followed by No 7 Protect and Perfect eye serum and Avene rich moisturiser as recommended on here by the girls. In the morning I’m using a cheapo facial wash from Aldi’s Lacura range and since I started using it I’ve noticed the spots I was prone to getting on my jawline have gone completely. I use Aldi’s !10 day moisturiser under my makeup.
Noticed my skin was dead dull so cut out the fags and have been drinking lots of water for the past 2 wks and eating peppers, tomatoes and beetroot at lunchtime and I got a compliment today from a colleague who told me that my skin looks great. I’ve noticed it myself tbh. Oh and I cut out the mid week glasses of wine too so thats helped. Sorry for the waffle.

I was pretty impressed by my sample Bioeffect serum, actually – first month in some time that I got no hormonal zits around my Special Womanly Time, and in general it seemed to do nice things for my skin. Am kinda tempted to splash out the big bucks come payday.

I have a second vial of it which I am keeping for the winter. I frigging love that stuff.

I have Combination-> Oliy skin and in late 30’s

Cleanser – Yes to Carrots eye and make-up Cleanser. I keep going back to it,

Toner – None, every one I have tried I break out as toner over-drys.

Bio-Effect EGF Serum: I am using sample also. I love the feel of it but can’t see any special effects.

    Boots SPF in the morning.

Moisturiser: am in-between and using Oil of Ulay as a backup but hoping to purchase a really good Clarins anti-wrinkle cream this weekend.

Also on order is Avon’s Anew Night nourishing cream as girls here in work have been raving about it.

    Thats about it!

Hey guys, I’ve been using Bio Effect, and it seemed to make me a little spotty which was a tad disappointed with..My skin was initially softer but then my combo skin had a mini revolt against it in the way of spots.. was raging as I had just seen the benefits of some microdermabrasion sessions – all clear skin, and no outbreaks.

  • papillon says:

haha snap on the EGF serum! Not sure I see much of a difference but I’ve been a bad girl to my skin lately eating wise and I’m still breastfeeding so hormonal spots akimbo.

Also liz earle C&P and normal/combinstion skin skin repair moisturiser
and Liz earle Superskin concentrate oil

and I’ve a small tube of Clinique dramatically different which was free in last month’s Glamour mag!

That Bio stuff sounds interesteing, I must add it to my wishlist.

Currently my routine is (as a 41-y-o with normal to dry skin, occasional breakouts of dermatitis)

Morning cleanse in shower – alternate btwn Neostrata 20 AHA foaming cleanser and Nuxe 3 roses foaming cleanser

    Daytime: Kiehl’s Acai serum, followed by a) Neutrogena Multi-defence SPF25, b) Kiehl’s Abyssine cream and c) Neutrogena SPF55
    Eyes: Kiehl’s Abyssine eye cream

Evening cleanse (whoops, have rather a few options here):
    a) Shu Uemura oil, b) Eve Lom (mostly winter use), c) Vichy gentle cleanser and toner and d) L’Occitane Apple Almond cleanser and toner (now discontinued so I ration it)

Serum: alternate between Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery (meh), Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Trilogy Rosehip Oil, followed by:

Moisturiser: finishing up several (Dermalogica, Avene, Clarins). Eye cream – same as morning

Yikes, quite a bunchastuff there. Am seriously using up stuff and trying to narrow it down, but the combination of potions seems to work on my skin right now, so why rock the boat? I am working hard on NOT being tempted to try EVEN MORE STUFF.

  • miffyonline says:

Oops, re the above post —– I don;t use all three daytime creams at once, I alternate between them depending on the SPF level required.

I love these “real people” posts!

When you blogged about the Vinexpert serum a few weeks back I said, right, I have to have that, being a crepey-lidded one. I absolutely love it – using it on lips too, and hadn’t even realised how much they’d de-plumped themselves. It is a HG product for me now, so thanks!

I’m using Kiehl’s Acai Damage Repairing Serum, but only at night, because it has little gritty bits in it (?) that I don’t fancy having on my face during the day. I like it a lot.

  • Aifs says:

I love posts like these. :)

SPF: I am so thrilled with my Factor 50 La Roche Posay. The lotion is gorgeous, not greasy and it doesn’t sting my eyes.
Moisturiser: Benefit b.right Total Moisture cream
Eye cream: Benefit it’s Potent Eye Cream
Cleanser: Eve Lom + muslin cloth
Serum: I also have a little sample of the bio effect. It’s nice but again, it hasn’t made a noticable difference. I also like Trilogy Rosehip oil and Estée Lauder Idealist.

  • I’ve been eyeing up the Elave cream since Joolie18 reviewed it but am loving my Lush routine and am only on day two.

  • fiona says:

where did you get the caudelie grape water?!been trying to find it everywhere

  • xgirl says:

fiona – I ordered it from their website directly as I couldn’t find it in SpaceNK and lookfantastic wouldn’t ship it! I ordered a few things as they ship for free if you order over €100.

LuLuBabe – glad you like the Caudalie serum :)

  • Viola says:

In the morning I just dab my skin with cotton wool and water but for cleaning at night I use Nivea’s Daily Essentials (the cream wash for when I don’t have much on my face, the cleansing lotion for removing make-up) and olive oil to take off my eye make-up.

For daytime I moisturise with Boots Hydrating eye cream and Simple rich moisturiser, and at night with Bio Oil and Garnier Pure A night treatment gel.

Until I get myself a decent sunscreen I rotate between Olay’s SPF 15 moisturiser, Simple SPF 50 sun cream and Roc Soleil Protexion Quenching Cream SPF 50 (which is absolutely CRAP, do NOT buy this product, it’s the worst thing ever)

I probably should throw away the Roc stuff, I doubt it even works as a sunscreen.
