Beaut.ie How To: The galaxy manicure

GALAXY

I always try to go easy on the use of specialist tools when I create a nail art tutorial, because I’m conscious that most people simply don’t have the necessary gear to follow along with a very involved how to. And not being able to have a go at DIYing something at home is nearly as frustrating as not knowing how to do it in the first place.

Today’s manicure looks incredibly impressive but involves the use of zero “proper” nail art tools, and is dead easy to boot.

So. What will you actually need?

  • Navy or very dark blue nail polish, ideally with a touch of shimmer or glitter to add depth, like Essence Hard To Resist (on shelf next month)
  • Bright or light blue creme nail polishes, like Ciate Skinny Jeans or Barry M Blueberry Ice Cream
  • Silver glitter topcoat/selection of glitter topcoats or polishes
  • Planetary polishes (optional)
  • A cosmetic sponge (a crappy old eyeshadow applicator is ideal)

  1. Begin by applying navy polish to the entire nail and allow it to dry.
  2. Next, lightly sponge your blue polish(es) onto the nails, taking them from about half or three-quarters of the way along their length to the tips. Apply a little at a time: you can always build up more coverage if needed.
  3. At this stage, you can make your manicure a little bit more elaborate by creating planets if you like – simply dot on white, light blue, red, or lilac daubs of polish. (If daubing sounds too messy, you can always use a ballpoint pen or a kirby grip to dot them on.)
  4. Apply your glittery topcoat(s), and be careful if using regular glitter polishes which will be more densely packed with sparkle and inclined to obscure what’s underneath. The easiest thing to do is simply apply one evenly all over, but you can create more interesting effects by using more than one colour and shape of glitter and being judicious about their placement to create the effect of twinkling stars.

Would you give it a go?
