Vatkins: Atkins tries to reinvent itself for veggies – it still looks like a heart attack on a plate

By Aisling | January 18 2010 | 16 Comments

The Atkins diet – without the meat.

The Atkins diet with no sausages, no bacon and no steaks – all the things that effectively make up Atkins.

But don’t worry vegetarians – because Atkins have now developed Vatkins especially for you. Simply swap all the meat for cheese, eggs and tofu. Pile on the butter and fry everything if you like. A perfect recipe for constipation and high cholesterol, sluggishness and bad breath.

The press release excitedly confirms that this is the perfect way for vegetarians to lose weight and speculates “it could even attract the attention of a few celebrity veggie A-listers such as Leona Lewis, Stella McCartney and Jude Law.”

Er, I doubt it.

Yeah, another fad diet I won’t be following ;)

Oh, I don’t see myself going completely veggie any time soon, but I try to cut down on meat – and replace it with more veg, not fried in butter cheese, eggs or tofu :)

I ate at Cafe Paradiso in Cork over the weekend – not a veggie but wow the food is amazing! Loved it.

  • Renee says:

I want to go there (Cafe Paradiso), haven’t been in years and they just reopened after the floods.
Had 2 friends on Atkins and it was the most vile diet ever. They both came away had frizzy hair, horrible complexions and let’s not mention their breath – like rotten eggs.

Sure what good is a fried egg without a piece of toast or some chips on the side (says the vegetarian who won’t be going on Vatkins any time soon)?

  • Laura says:

    This looks gross!

To be fair, friends of mine have gone high protein both vege and non-vege styles, and the vege ones didn’t have stinky breath or nasty constipation. I blame those on the excessive amounts of red meat that the non-veges ingested!

  • Jill says:

Dear Dr Atkins (deceased), Im veggie but I only like scrambled eggs and eggs used in baking. Where does this leave me?

  • Kirstie says:

I probably COULD live on blocks of gorgonzola if compelled too, but variety is the very spice of life.

  • KellBell says:

I really do wonder how people get away with advocating these largely unhealthy ‘diets’ that are completely unbalanced? How does eating fat and protein only = healthy??? I’m at a loss …

  • Ros says:

    It’ll never catch on.
Most veggies (like me) are well aware of the need and the benefits of copious amounts of wholegrains, fruit and veg in the diet.
Any diet (veggie or non) that omits these is unhealthy, unsustainable and downright stooopid!

Oh I dont know….im one of the piggies on the pigs2twigs diet and my weekend breakfast would comprise of fried egg and sausages. Now egg is fried in olive oil and sausages (90% pork) are george foremanned (such a word?) but it hasn’t hindered my diet at all or given me any dodgy side effects – no bad breath, feel very energetic, skin is glowy, no constipation etc. I think you cant understand protein and fat diets until you do the proper research really…but hey, I used to be just as sceptical about Dr Atkins until I read the science. I think pre-packed weight watchers meals are prob worse for you!!!

  • Sha Sha says:

Did dr atkins a couple of years ago..good grief i lost so much weight but my eyes were surrounded by black circles and i became a militant protein only girl. When i look back now i looked scary…HOWEVER..if i had to drop a stone in 2 weeks i would be tempted to do it again,at the moment i’m on the pu’erh tea diet..gick on a stick but at least i get to eat batch loaf..nom nom nom..

  • Gracie says:

sha sha, how long did you do that induction phase? Not sure of how similar it is to atkins, but the Idiot Proof Diet is very low carb for the first two weeks (or longer if you need it) but you definitely have to eat lots of leafy green veg with your meals. The only bad side effects was the detox from sugar and caffeine, but thats more about the badness inside than eating meat/eggs/dairy.

  • Niamh says:

Ah here lads. If you actually researched the Atkins diet instead of just knocking it, you’d see that it’s practically identical to the Pig2Twig diet you all seem so fond of on here. I started Atkins 2 years ago, lost a shedload of weight and kept it off, my cholesterol went down and I eat consistently more veg than I ever did pre-Atkins. I’m sick of seeing it scundered because it goes against accepted wisdom. Love the site though.

  • Sha Sha says:

Gracie..I did the induction for a little bit longer than suggested but added loads of nuts after about 4 weeks.Niamh i did eat mountains of greens, and discovered a love of spinach!1 do agree with you ,i eat alot more greens now and tend to pile up on the likes of green beans and non starchy veg instead of piling the spudattos on!

  • Niamh says:

Exactly Sha Sha! It makes you actually think about what you eat rather than just automatically going for the easy cereal/bread/spuds option. If it actually was all about endless meat there’s no way I’d be able to stick to it.

  • Gracie says:

Totally agree Niamh, pigs2twigs heavily borrows from it and it works a treat! Im on it and eat very little processed foods now. Okay, I eat my eggs and cheese than ever but i eat no choc, crisp, beer or stodgy takeaways. And I also dont understand that people go on about Dr ATkins dying when the poor man was elderly and fell on ice!! Its mad, I think we are kind of brain washed to think atkins=bad but its okay to drink shakes or eat cereals as meal replacements! Now thats worrying!!

Sorry, thats not a dig at this site as its how I discovered IPD and my new ligher self ;)
