Rate it: Favorite Christmas tune!

In a taxi yesterday the driver was playing a CD of Christmas music. Every time one he particularly liked came on he raised the volume. In the time honoured tradition of Dublin taxi men, he totally ignored any pleas to turn it down by doing a kind of whingy singing and telling me I’d no Christmas spirit. Between that and the smell of Magic Tree, by the time I got out of the cab my ears were ringing and I had to go home and take two Nurofen for the headache.

“Ah lovely music that wha” he said repeatedly leaning back in his Octavia seat.

“Eh yeah, but could you turn it down I bit?” I would reply.

“Ah jaysus you’ve no Christmas spirit.” Cue tuneless singing along with the CD.

Love them or hate them one thing’s for sure – you just can’t get away from Christmas tunes at this time of the year. Maybe Christmas isn’t complete for you without a few hundred drunken singalongs to “Here we are Merry Christmas” down the pub – or perhaps a more decorous carol session is your thing? Bob Geldof has recently admitted that “Do they know it’s Christmas” is one of the worst songs ever recorded – but for a lot of people hearing that song is what Christmas is all about.

What really gets you into the Christmas spirit? Adeste Fidelus or Fairytale of New York?

Fairytale of New york…..hands down. Also like Chris De Burgh’s “a spaceman came travelling”, even though the lyrics are absolute drivel :P

I love the version Florence (she of flo + the machine) did of Wham’s “last christmas”……so sweet! But I do like the corny original too!

Also I’m quite partial to Duke Special’s cover of the “power of love” which he performed live on 2fm yonks ago!

Oh! and “driving home for christmas” – Chris Rea is timeless and Carol of bells – puts me in a frantic mood to shop…… give a give a give a give a GARMIN!! lol

Oh I’m a sucker for Christmas music! I was singing along to my Christmas album driving to work in the snow & frost. I love Fairy Tale of New York too.

I do like some of the cheesey ones too like Jingle Bell Rock and Sleigh Ride. :D

I think as well as the taxi driver I was watching Love Actually last night and all the Christmas songs in the film got me thinking

Has anyone heard that Futureheads one, Christmas was better in the 80s? Hilarious

It’s gotta be ‘White Christmas’, by Bing, and Stop the Cavalry (dub a dub a dum dum, etc). Also Power of Love by Frankie is great, even though it’s not remotely Christmassy!

Ah you’re allowed like cheesy songs at Christmas. I love Mariah’s All I Want For Christmas to dance to. I think for a carol/church kind of song you can’t beat Oh Holy Night if it is sung well, gives me goosebumps.

Did anyone watch the Glee Christmas episode last night, thought that Kurt and Blaine’s Baby It’s Cold Outside was great.

My favourite has to be one from the Home Alone 2:Lost in New York soundtrack -sorta obscure but great song – All alone on Christmas. Just full of all things festive, love it!

  • Aoife says:

a birrov celine dion oh holy night!

  • Grá says:

It has to be Fairytale of Newyork! It gives us a chance to go all Irish and wreck the joint with all our set dancing swinging and mawling :D There were a few Americans and Londoners at our Xmas party last Friday and when this song came on they were extremely confused! :D

I wish I was cool enough to have claim I loved some American indie singer’s Christmas song or something, but nope, I’m with Poptart – has to be Mariah!!!!!!!!!!

  • Emz says:

Fairytale of New York is my favourite & it’s playing on the radio as I type!

Aw i just love Christmas music, it’s a very major part of it for me, lots of cheese! You always have to have a moment where your slightly pissed with everyone’s arms around each other in the pub belting out Fairytale of NY :) Love so many of them though, wham, band aid, mariah….even, dare i say it, a couple of the cliff ones! (Runs away & hides in shame!)
Kirstie, totally agree re Chris Rea…nothing better than being in the car on the way home from town on Christmas Eve & that coming on…I go into town every xmas eve with my dad…usually listen to Gerry Ryan & Santa on the way in in the morning..will really miss Gerry this year :(

Is anyone listening to Christmas FM in aid of Barnardos? It’s great but also has some awful crap! There is a cheesetastic american song called Christmas Shoes…

Am I alone in HATING that Mariah Carey Christmas song??!!

    I love:
    Wham! – Last Christmas;
Happy Christmas (War is Over) – John Lennon

and of course the original Band Aid “Do they know its Christmas?” Think that’s my personal favourite, always gets me!

  • Linz says:

Definitely Fairytale of New York. There are some fun ones too though like Grandma got run over by a Reindeer and The Christmas Can Can! If you haven’t heard these you need to! Great Fun!!

One other one worth mentioning is the music they play in the background on both the Guinness and Coca Cola ads on TV. Its not Christmas until you see at least one of these ads with the Guinness one being my favourite!!! “Even at the home of the black stuff we wish for a white one” – Is it a tad bit pathetic of me to get a bit teary eyed at this ad?????!!! lol Im a Christmas baby I will blame it on that!

  • Nimi says:

Christmas is the time for all things cheesy – has to be Boney M Mary’s Boy Child!
