What to Wear: Inverted Triangle

We’ve had some pears and apples and now it’s time to leave the fruit behind and move onto some shapes! The next instalment of our body shape guide is all about the inverted triangle.

I know, not the most glamorous name, you’d think the powers at be would have thought of something a little more fabulous. But it’s an original! You lovely inverted triangles, are the opposite to a pear. You tend to have a broader shoulder measurement in contrast to your hips, and so the trick is to create balance on the lower half of your body, and keep the details away from your tops and jackets.

Jessica Biel

Our celeb “I.T.” is Jessica Biel. What I love about Jess is that she generally sticks to strapless dresses to show off her shoulders, but on the red carpet she keeps all the details of her dress choices to her hips. You’ll see her wearing a lot of pocket details and the odd peplum too!

So what are your guidelines?

  • Tops

Ladies who are this shape should avoid tops that are too detailed; so stick to block colours in styles that have a v-neck or round neck to flatter your décolleté.

  • Trousers and skirts

As you have a narrower hip measurement, you can opt for some detail here. Printed trousers will bring the focus downwards to balance with your top half. And a-line skirts are also your friend!

  • Shoes

The printed and colour thing also applies to your toes. Stilettos work really well with a boot cut jean for the inverted triangle.
