There was a time when working in the flight business was the height of glamour. But while there is still part of us that dreams of skipping the queues and rolling our mini cases straight through security, jaunty scarf whipped around our necks, we wouldn't prance up and down a catwalk for the opportunity.
The Oriental Beauty pageant is used as a talent pool from which airlines in China recruit air hostesses. The pageant, run by modelling agency, Oriental Beauty, does offer the top prize of an actual modelling contract but for most entrants the prospect of gaining a place in an airline training school is the more realistic goal.
The criteria for entry are pretty exact. Candidates must be at least five foot six in height although, for those with exceptional looks, this can be dropped to five foot five (lucky them). They must also be “elegant, slim, have a sweet voice and have no scars in the exposed part of their skin”.
On top of the exacting physical requirements, candidates also need to be recent graduates.

Needless to say, this event has its critics and here's hoping it will become a thing of the past sooner rather than later.
Does this make your skin crawl just a little bit? Or do you understand why some women would take this as an opportunity? Would you take part, given the chance?
