"Women in the United States care about how they look. Maybe women in London don't care about their bodies. I dunno"
Dr Linder
Last night on BBC2 Louis Theroux took us on another of his daring exposes of American obsessions. And last night plastic surgery in LA was his target.
We met the smug Dr Linder who performs 1000 boob jobs a year and whose receptionist (who seemed to have put her makeup on with Marge Simpsons makeup gun) couldn't stop getting procedures that she clearly didn't need. Two or three boob jobs, tummy tuck, liposuction, belly button "augmentation", nose job - and from the looks of her, botoxed to the max too. She is 26.
We met the grotesque Steve.

I've never seen anyone look so much like one of those creepy ventriloquists dummys. With a big ol trout pout, surprised eyebrows, plastic face and tattooed nipples which he proudly displayed. How old was he, Louis asked in his wide eyed way. Approaching a half a century Steve told us coyly. He looked like every age and no age. He didn't actually look human.
Louis himself went under the knife. To get lipo on his so-called flanks. I couldn't see any flanks, but sure what the hell. "We call them love handles in the United States. What do you call them in England?" asked the surgeon. "Love handles" replied Louis, not missing a beat.
The patronising attitude that only Americans care enough about their appearance to have painful, unnecessary and quite frankly ridiculous surgery (in many cases) was hilarious.
Did you see it? What did you think?
