And now for the latest in bizarre licensed merchandise: “Gangnam Style” socks, available from – where else? – Penneys.
Imagine how awful it would be if in a few months’ time, when “Gangnam Style” is little more than a slightly cringey memory, you crossed your legs in public and someone spotted Psy’s chubby, cartoonish visage staring up at them from your ankle?
I can see these Gangnam Style-ing into the bargain bin in a couple of weeks’ time.
Also spotted: a horrible approximation of the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster/meme, also quickly destined for the €2 rail.
But you have to say “fair play” to Psy. How many other songs sung entirely in Korean have hit number one across the globe? Obviously he’s looking to cash in on it while he can. However its not just him - you can’t turn left in Penneys without seeing the Rolling Stones lips or the faces of Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone peering down at you from every shelf.

Everything is plastered with Rolling Stones or Ramones logos, from t-shirts to cushions – because nothing says “punk” like throw pillows, am I right? I know they're in, but I can’t help but feel a bit ticked off at Penneys for generating the latest wave of teens’n’tweens wearing band merchandise despite only having the vaguest idea of the music.
Though “Gangnam Style” socks and Ramones throw pillows are only the tip of the bizarre merchandise iceberg. Fans of the Twilight Saga can purchase anything from reproductions of Bella’s engagement ring and the clothes Kristen Stewart wears in the film to their very own Edward Cullen body pillow.
Yes, a life sized, spoon-able version of R-Pattz’ swoony vampire, now sold out on Etsy (again, where else?)
Do you own any "interesting" film/TV/music merchandise? Is there anything you bought back in the height of your fangirl days that you cringe about now?
