Pauline McLynn Won't Ask Anybody if They Want Tea in EastEnders

This week marked twenty years since the first ever episode of Father Ted aired, and it's left quite the legacy for its stars. Actress Pauline McLynn, who of course played housekeeper Mrs Doyle on the show, hasn't been able to ask anybody for a cup of tea in years thanks for her famous catchphrase.

In an interview with the Irish Mirror, McLynn said; "I remember being unable to offer anyone tea for nearly 20 years. I'll ask them would they like something to drink, but I can't say, 'Will you have a cup of tea?' because it's Mrs Doyle's phrase!"

McGlynn recently joined the cast of EastEnders as Yvonne Cotton and while there has informed writers that she doesn't want to have to ask anybody for a cup of tea in the script as it's a catchphrase that's automatically associated with Mrs Doyle.

"Recently on EastEnders I had cause to give people tea in a time of crisis. I said to them, 'Can we just take out any vocal offer of tea? I'll put the tea in front of them'."

McLynn added: "I had to come in with the tray and teacups. People thought I was doing this as a nod to Father Ted, but I wasn't. It was in the script!"

Is this the most recognisable catchphrase of the series? And will you have a cup?
