I realise that many people might not want to talk about Christmas just yet, unless it involves ogling limited edition festive offerings or advent calendars from our favourite beauty brands, and I’d normally be one of them. But selection boxes invaded the shelves of Tesco back in September (SEPTEMBER! I ask you) and Penneys have been stocking Christmas jumpers since the middle of summer, or at least that’s what it feels like.
Personally, I get annoyed when anything festively inclined pops up before the end of October. That just feels like Christmas trying to muscle in on Halloween’s build-up time and in that case, Christmas can feck right off. Saying that though, I still don’t really let myself get excited or swept up in general Christmasness (that’s a word, right?) until December has rolled around.
As far as the retail world is concerned though, November is fair game and just last week big Christmas ads were rolled out by M&S, with their typically glittery two minutes of festive fluff and John Lewis’s yearly attempt to make everyone cry, this time with added cartoon bunnies.

So while I’m trying to ignore the chocolate snowmen, the jumpers, the Christmas lights on Grafton Street and the fact that RTE’s Big Big Movie over the weekend was The Santa Clause, at least the music hasn’t started yet. In fact, there’s actually a campaign this year called Prevent Premature Jingling, which is getting shops and businesses to pledge not to play Christmas music until the 1st of December, which I think is a brilliant idea.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in the least bit Grinch-like, I just don’t want to be fed up of Christmas and its assorted trappings by the second week of December. Once I do get to my designated Christmas excitement time, I’ll be walking around with Christmas FM in my headphones, watching Elf and getting excited about placing my Hogwarts decoration on the tree (ok, I’ll admit that I’m already the tiniest bit excited about that one) but NOT JUST YET!
So, do you suffer from Christmas build up burnout or are you happily jingling bells as soon as you’ve wiped off your Halloween zombie makeup?
And how soon is too soon for Christmas excitement and films and songs?
