Around this time last year, I lost my favourite pair of gloves. Well, I say favourite, but some variation of "only" might be more appropriate since they were the only pair of grown-up, non-ski wear pair of finger warmers that I possessed. They were olive green numbers from Marks and Spencer that I thought looked very clashing chic against my navy Zara winter coat; they'd survived several years in my care until that fateful day that I failed to notice them falling off my lap as I stood up to get off the Tube.
I couldn't find another pair that I liked as much as them, so the upshot was that I spent last winter going around either with my hands shoved up to my elbows in my pockets or clad in the puffy black lagging jacket-alike ski gloves.
Neither are especially good looks for me, and since Dad (a.k.a. my personal long-distance weatherman slash main Lyons tea supplier) informs me that it's to get much colder from tomorrow I've been thinking about gloves rather a lot this week.
I seem to be drawn to three fairly distinct styles...

If, like me, you've got small hands and short fingers and are driven demented by extra centimetres of empty space in the fingertips of gloves, try mittens or capped gloves, stretchy knitted gloves which tend to run small, or kids' departments (I got great wear out of a pair of puppet-fingered gloves in college. I might not be joking.) I've yet to find a high-street retailer who can make a leather glove to fit my hand like, y'know, a glove; I'd love to hear from anyone who has had better luck.
