Today the Huffington Post published their top ten most shite places to visit in the entire world. Among them they listed Frankfurt (snoozeville), Casablanca (again snoozeville) and Disney World in Florida. But right up there in the top three was our very own Temple Bar: the ahem "cultural quarter" of good old Dublin Town.
And many Dubliners will agree that they would never enter Temple Bar after dark. It is after all the stag and hen capital of the world and it's full of tourists getting drunker than they've ever been in their lives. Because that's what you do in Dublin obviously - have "the craic" The HP didn't diss the whole of Dublin - they were pretty fair in their observations.
The city of Dublin is great. There's a castle and gorgeous architecture, there are renowned colleges and green spaces, and there are many other things to see and do that go beyond the tired "Irish culture equals pubs" stereotype. The Temple Bar area of Dublin, however, is a prime example of the rampant fleecing of drunken tourists that should be avoided at all costs. This small area caters to visitors competing to see how drunk they can get in "authentic" bars and nightclubs (aka overpriced tourist traps). Avoid it at all costs and seek out a pub literally anywhere else in Dublin for a better experience.
