Maybelline New York Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara Review, Swatch & Pictures

Say hello to Maybelline's newest mascara launch, yet another to join the Colossal family, which seriously must be considering putting in for planning permission for a bit of an auld extension round the back at this stage.  Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara, €12.39, is available now - but is it the cats miaow?

Ok, yes, I was indeed purrfectly predisposed to like it from the off because it's got the word 'cat' in the title, but the cat bit (in part) comes from the fact that the brush (created by the wand wizard, we wonder?) features a special patented curved 'claw' action that's designed to grab and extend lashes as it curls them up. That means it's meant to get to each and every teensy weensy one, coating them liberally with the special gunk, which is - oh wouldn't you know it - a "unique collagen-infused formula instantly plumps lashes for up to eight times the volume."

A decent price, a decent result and decent wear, this is a fair budget substitute for Lancome's Doll Eyes if you don't fancy spending €25.50 - or effectively twice the price. This does the same fanning-out-kinda-thang but it's actually a lot more volumising than I found Doll Eyes to be, so if you like amateur dramatics, you might prefer Cat Eyes.

We took a small preview at this last week in a post about the Body Shop's Shimmer Cubes (check it out for another look at Cat Eyes in action), and a couple of you asked me what mascara I had on - Colossal Cat Eyes, gals. I've been trialling it on and off for a few weeks now and it's not dis-improved with age as cheaper mascaras often can.

No, it's not the most va-va-voom volumiser I've ever tried; I'm a bit dubious about the eight times volume claim, I definitely did not experience anything like that. But it does fan out the lash fringe effectively, it's black as a priest's socks can be, and it's got good lift and separation as well as some volume.  The brush is neat and easy to use and the slight bend kicks my straight lashes up a little with minimal splash and mess onto lids. All good things in my book, especially at the price.

Anything bad? Yep, one thing I'm not so crazy keen on. Beaut.ie reader Atkin asked in comments on the Body Shop post, "I’m afraid your review will mention flaking seeing as it’s Maybelline." I'm sorry to say it does flake, but on me only towards the end of a very long day - think application at 8am and flakes by 9pm. But the flaking was enough to be noticeable and annoying, as in it was a lot, and it was on my cheeks.

That's unusual - mascara generally stays where I put it, so if you're a person who finds their mascara migrates regularly this might be one to avoid. If, like me, you generally have no issues, then this is a great mascara that's probably best kept for periods of shorter wear, like nights out or shorter work days.

Have you tried it yet? Thoughts?
