As ageing lothario Ken Barlow unsteadily boarded the houseboat of his current fancy woman, played by Stephanie Beacham, he exclaimed at how nice the place smelled.
"Oh yes", she smiled, eyebrows arched in full Dynasty-mode. "It's an upifliting blend of bergamot essential oil", she purred, before saucily offering him some pineapple cake "made this morning, a bit squishy."
We didn't see what happened after that. Thank God.
When I spritzed the newest eau de toilette from niche French perfumer Jean-Charles Brosseau, I was immediately reminded of the above scene, because it's Bergamote by name, and bergamot by nature. And oh boy, is it delicious. This is an incredibly popular ingredient to use in fragrance right now, and if you're a musky, floriental fan, then no doubt you're feeling a bit out in the cold, but if you're me, and fresh, zingy, citrus accords are your bag, then you're in luck.

This ticks all three boxes, and while it almost seems to be simple and single note, it's not: kicking off with bitter orange, citronella and bergamot, you'll also get notes of rosemary, jasmine, heliotrope and clove.
I'm going to wear this all summer long, all the while keeping my eyes peeled for randy geriatrics.
Bergamote by Jean-Charles Brosseau is available at Arnotts now, from €37 for 30ml.
