Years and years and years ago, way back in Elizabethan times, people used a mixture of white lead and vinegar to whiten their complexion. This early form of foundation was fashionable - but deadly. Yes, people actually died from putting this mixture on their faces.
Of course, they didn't know that lead was poisonous, I guess they just figured a snow white complexion looked better than a smallpox marked one. Unfortunate really...
Figuratively speaking, there have been quite a few poisonous makeup trends in history. Makeup is supposed to enhance beauty rather than present you as a totally different person. Have you ever given someone a fright because you look so different without all the warpaint?
There's an online trend at the moment where people are only painting half their face and the difference is remarkable. But the real message is that they are beautiful with makeup and without.
It's a good way at picking out some dodgy makeup application though. It's all down to personal preference but I am really not sure about those Romulan-esque HD brows...
Other makeup trends that we think should be erased from history include:
- Too Dark Lip Liner
We get it, your lips were supposed to look way bigger and plumper or whatever but it really did the opposite. The worst was dark brown lip liner with a lighter brown lipstick - who can we blame for this one? New Rule: Lip liner should be just a shade darker than your natural lip colour.
- Frosted Lips

On the subject of lips, this one was just as bad. You know the way lips turn blue when you are cold and it's a pretty bad sign that you are at risk of hypothermia and it's not a great look? That's what frosted lip colours looked like and it didn't suit anyone. Except maybe the Ice Queen or Frosty the Snowman
- Oompa Loompa Tan
It's still an issue but thankfully, in recent years fake tan has toned down a lot. There was a time not so long ago, however, that tan equaled orange skin. I remember a girl in college who had the most beautiful red hair but she insisted on matching her naturally beautiful pale skin to the shade of her hair. I think she also had frosted lips.
They did this in the Elizabethan times, they did it in the '90s and history repeats itself so it's likely we'll do it again. We would rather it didn't though.
- Electric Blue Eye Shadow
Blue eye shadow can look amazing, but you know what we mean when we say that this style of electric eye shadow should be put in the waste bin of history. It's the unblended, up to your eyebrows style we shudder at; blended and minimal, blue eyeshadow is totes flattering.
