YSL's Faux Cils mascara has long been a beloved favourite of mine. It is also possibly the least justifiable beauty expense that I have ever made. At €31 it is literally insanely expensive, but I just haven't been able to find anything that gives me the same lengthening, volumising results.
I can't be doing with any wishy-washy shades of black, either. It has to be the blackest black, and my beloved Faux Cils is certainly that.
This salary-stealing mascara gives me lovely black lashes, but when I think about the number of times I've repurchased it, and begin to do the maths, a sweat starts to break out on my forehead. HOW MUCH?
So it's about time I looked for an affordable alternative that gives me the kind of lashes I'm looking for. In the epic battle between high and low-end, can this new offering from NYC (€3.49) compete? Let's see!
I was rather impressed with the NYC offering - yes, it's very slightly clumpier and the thinner formula is not as darkly pigmented. It also takes more work to coat the lashes than its high-end neighbour. However, as you can see, it actually offers better curl than Faux Cils (my lashes are seriously curl-resistant, so I'm really impressed).

The final effect of both mascaras is blatantly similar, though the Faux Cils just about wins based on volume and length. Only just, though.
These are concessions I may well be willing to make in order to save €27.51. I mean, what have I been thinking? Just think how many biscuits I could buy with that money...
