Essence Nail Repair Pads: Cheap but Naaaa-sty

nail pads

Meandering around Dunnes Stores looking for some fluoro pink leggings to complete an '80s-ish outfit for a roller disco last weekend, I happened upon the Essence stand. Well, it might be more accurate to say that I espied it out of the corner of my eye and gradually managed to edge my way towards it without Himself copping that I was intent on getting over to the cosmetics corner. With a €2 coin burning a hole in my pocket and two hands full of shamefully split, peeling, and otherwise revolting nails I splished* out on a packet of Essence quick nail repair pads.

These are an assortment of 20 pre-cut transparent sticky nail shapes to accommodate talons of all sizes, and the idea is that you choose the sticker that's the best fit for each nail in distress. Peel off the backing, smooth onto the entire nail to cover it from base to tip, and file off any excess. Invisible nail repair completed, you can then paint over your patch job if you so wish.

Sounds good, but I wish I'd saved me few shillings. When I tried to reposition one that had gone on a bit wonky, it took the top layer of my nail clean off. Yeeeech. I decided then to just do a patch job on a split tip, which went much better... until I had a shower a while later and the whole thing came off and skedaddeled down the plug hole. I might as well have used a bit of Sellotape. Third time lucky, I thought, and gave them one last chance, only short of standing on the repaired nails to make sure the stuff was well stuck. I should have just gone with my gut instinct and given up on them after the first bad sign, because sure enough they all started lifting within the hour.

In future, I'll be sticking (ho ho) with my own advice!

* well, they were only €1.99, it wasn't exactly splashing out.
