Do You Switch Your Base in Summer?

smashbox bronzing foundation primer

Random days aside, it never really gets warm enough here to warrant a whole new summer beauty routine. Oh, sure, I change my moisturiser with the seasons, but in general, my foundation choices stay with me through the year.

The exception is when I'm abroad. When I'm in a hot country, I generally don't want to get into my usual makeup routine - cos I know it's all gonna slide off my face within the hour anyway, so something generally changes. I either ditch the foundation altogether, getting by on sunscreen and concealer, or I switch to a tinted moisturiser. With the advent of my new-found like for some mineral brands, I've noticed that this can be a really good hot-weather choice: not so prone to slippage as a liquid, they're also waterproof, so less easily dislodged by any sweating I might be doing. If you don't want to splurge on a tinted product you'll only use a couple of times, mix your fluid foundation with facial sunscreen for a sheer wash of perfecting (and protecting) colour.

There's another option this year though - the mighty Smashbox have just launched a Bronzing Foundation Primer. Designed to warm up your skintone, it's not going to make you look ludicrously brown, just slightly sun-kissed, so a great choice if you've either been away and have a hint of a tan, or you're on holliers and don't want to look like the proverbial milk bottle.

It also does the same job as their regular primers - it mattifies, smoothes fine lines, hides pores and gives a more even skintone. The hint of colour in it means that if you're having a good skin day you could go solo, or if not, a bit of jucicious concealer and bronzer will give you a gorgeous, summery sunshine glow. On-counter now, it'll set you back €37 from Smashbox stockists.
