Small, everyday hair accessories have little hope of surviving for any length of time in my care. Regardless of brand, price point, or performance, all clips, grips, bobbins and hairbands that come my way seem to vanish into some mysterious wormhole, and of course one apparently opened in the flat the night before we travelled home for Christmas: there wasn't a hair bobbin to be found when I was packing.
I decided it would be easier to pick up a few replacements in Ireland than traipse to the Gamma Quadrant to retrieve the lost bobbins, so I slung a packet of Snag-Free Black Ponybands into my basket in Boots at the earliest opportunity. Small but stretchy thin elastic bands that look for all the world like, well, elastic bands, they put me in mind of the Blax hair bobbins that I usually favour. I also liked that there were about a bajillion of them in a packet, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I happened to lose a few.
Oh, and they were dirt cheap, which didn't hurt either: it's kind of hard to beat a bajillion hair elastics for €2.20, really.

Turns out there's a reason that they're so inexpensive and plentiful, and it's not that Boots are super generous. Since I bought them, which is only a couple of days ago and I've only worn my hair up twice since then, I've already been through five or six of these hair elastics without any help from space phenomenon. They snap more frequently than your man Klingon Worf, and elastics snapping in my fingers while I'm trying to tie my hair up displeases me greatly.
You definitely get what you pay for with these yokes, and I certainly won't be paying for them again.
