For over 100 years, we have been taking beauty inspiration from the silver screen.
Silent movie star Louise Brooks inspired 1000 hairstyles. Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tennenbaum brought black, smudgy liner back to the fore. And then there was the whole age of Hollywood Glamour when you couldn't leave the house without a red pout and perfectly set hair.
It's interesting that many of the iconic beauty looks that have appeared on the silver screen over the past ten years have been from movies set in the past. But that's what this decade has been all about: taking influence from history and making it work for now.
These five leading ladies and their lovely faces have imprinted themselves on the beauty lover's psyche in one way or another. Even elements of costume makeup, like from Black Swan, have made their way to the mainstream. But credit must go to the movie set makeup artists who create looks for the star to shine. So we can too.
Factory Girl (2006)
Sienna Miller's uncanny resemblance to Edie Sedgwick was one of the reasons why her look in the film was imitated so many times. She sported a similar look in her off-screen - and so did we.
The key to emulating the Factory Girl is a strong eye and nude lip. Enhance your brow, and really go for it. Line the entire circumference of your eyes and stick on those lashes.
The products we recommend are:
- Anastasia Beverly Hills - Dipbrow Pomade
- So Sue Me - Chloe Lashes
- Charlotte Tilbury - Hot Lips in Kim K.W.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
The original Manic Pixie Dream Girl, Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer showed that the 'natural', perky look is just as impressive as full-on glam. Like Factory Girl, this look focuses on the eye and lip, but in a more subtle way. A little rosy glow on the cheek and you're good to go.
We would use:
- Charlotte Tilbury - Legendary Lashes Mascara
- MAC - Cream Blend Blush in Something Special
- Lancome - Juicy Shaker Lip Gloss in Berry Tale

Black Swan (2010)
You couldn't turn a corner at Halloween time without getting caught in a Black Swan's net tutu. The look wasn't just restricted to costumes, though. It brought back an ethereal semi-goth thing that pale women and teenagers of all skin tones were totally down with. This time, the eye look is beyond strong, and the lips are just as exaggerated. As for the face, it shouldn't be a one note pure white; you will need to catch the light to avoid looking like a mime.
Products to achieve this look:
- Mac - Pro Longwear Fluidline in Blacktrack
- Mac - Strobe Cream
- Make Up Atelier - White Waterproof Foundation
- Armani - Rouge Ecstasy Lip Colour in Night Viper
