There are few things more depressing than looking in the mirror of a morning and realising that – all of a sudden – you look old. I can say that with authority because it's exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago. It wouldn't have been so bad if it had been the morning after a heavy evening's drinking or even a very late night, but this was the morning after a good eight hour's sleep and I was a bit shook by the shook-looking wreck staring back at me from the other side of the bathroom sink.
It's taken me a while to put my finger on what had changed, because I'm not noticeably more wrinkly or saggy faced or blotchy toned than usual. And then one one day earlier this week I copped what the problem was: my undereye dark circles had their own peripheral dark circles, running from the inner corner of each eye down and along the tops of my cheeks and making me look exhausted. They are apparently called tear troughs and they are my new beauty bugbear; now that I've noticed them I can't stop noticing the feckers. They are completely and utterly wrecking my head and I'm planning a weekend of experimenting with concealers and correctors and highlighters in hopes of finding a way to disguise them reasonably effectively.
The upside is that I've pretty much stopped even noticing any of the other beauty or body niggles that might otherwise give me pause for thought, which must be a good thing.
